“There is no debate as to whether man is warming the planet. Climate change is a rather simple concept, but maybe not so simple for the scientifically inept--or for those who simply don't read, or think, or just don't know their multiplication table. This is not some sort of partisan issue. Wake up, you conservative fools. I must admit I didn't realize that there were many of you left--those too comfortable in their pickup trucks showcasing their Confederate flags and W '04 stickers to believe that the very luxuries they enjoy every day are somehow warming the planet. Then again I shouldn't expect much from those who think gays and blacks and Muslims are inferior.

A Reasonable Argument for God's Existence

Commented Mar 8, 2011 at 21:38:27 in Religion

“What is best for humanity and best for Earth? To answer this, one must make moral assumptions.

For instance, Is Earth with a large human population desirable or one with a smaller population and perhaps smaller environmental impact? Science cannot answer this directly, but via logic and reason and empirical evidence it can tell us what Earth may look like in both cases. Science per se cannot answer which of the two cases is more desirable. The moral part of it needs to be considered by philosophers, religious figures and scholars, politicians, and generally by Democratic discourse. Get my drift? I don't doubt the powers of logic and reason, but logic and reason can only get you so far on certain questions without making fundamental assumptions.”

A Reasonable Argument for God's Existence

Commented Mar 8, 2011 at 18:34:31 in Religion

“Excellent article:

I'd like to add my though that:

Science and religion have different aims, and are not mutually exclusive. Science, it seems, seeks to explain what we observe, whereas religion seeks to explain, fundamentally, why we exist and how we ought to live.

Consider climate change. Science informs us that, due to fossil fuel emissions, the climate is warming because of the greenhouse effect. But science does not deal with the question, What should we do about climate change? This is an ethical question, which I think requires deep philosophical and religious considerations. In order to answer it, we must consider how well-off we want future inhabitants (human and non-human) of Earth to be. John Broome of the Scientific American explains this beautifully in "The Ethics of Climate Change." (http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=the-ethics-of-climate-change)

In response to the question, one might reply that we should curtail the negative effects of climate change so as to ensure a livable planet for our grandchildren, their children, ad infinitum. To justify this, one could assert that God decrees that we are to treat our neighbors (temporal in this case) as we want to be treated. Thus should we care for the livelihood of future generations. There are, of course, alternative answers to the question; I just wanted to give an example where religion (in tandem with the knowledge that science provides) can help guide our lives.”

Michael McElroy on Mar 8, 2011 at 22:36:07

“"Science, it seems, seeks to explain what we observe, whereas religion seeks to explain, fundamentally, why we exist and how we ought to live. "

Would that this were true. Except that somewhere on the order of 67% of Americans believe the fables told in the Bible about the creation of life.

Religion is not needed to guide our lives. We don't need fiction to help find out facts. In fact, depending on a book of tribal mythology cannot _possibly_ give us valuable answers to modern problems.”

mmcwatters on Mar 8, 2011 at 19:37:03

“Actually, no. In fact ,science can help us explain how we out to live. If we assume that what is best for humanity and best for the earth is the proper course of action, then logic and reason (core tenets of science) can guide us there as well if not better than a code based on the supernatural.”

“Even more material for Conan to trash NBC now. The last few nights he has been in his prime.

What this shows is that NBC has no taste for comedy. I cringe if I ever watch Leno. Conan cracks me up, and his comedic style is unique and of a a much higher caliber than any other comedian. Moreover, I think that Weinberg and the band are the best in the business. They are super tight and can play almost any genre of music, though I prefer when they play jazz. Plus they are all goofballs and add much to the hilarity of the show.

I'm for Coco!”

“OK. First of all, anyone who thinks Coldplay is not a great band is not very wise. They are popular yes, but also very talented. Why don't you people actually listen to their albums, and then meaningfully criticize their music? Second, that "borrowed" phrase in the music is one small part of the song. The chorus is unique, and so is the song as a whole, including the rhythm. As for people saying Coldplay is just a branching off of U2 and Radiohead... ummm that's how music works. It evolves. The Talking Heads in many ways had significant influence on U2 and Radiohead. Bottom line is that Coldplay is it's own talented band, that also happens to be popular.”

“No matter what your ideology, KO is practicing the type of journalism we need right now, journalism that is not masked by some false sense of objectivity that seems to be what most in the mainstream press seem to strive for. "Objectivity," as defined by the mainstream press, often is nothing more than the practice of countering real and obvious truths with falsehoods.”

justamazed on Aug 29, 2008 at 18:11:26

“Journalists are supposed to by definition tell what is happening or what happened. KO does not do that. The whole story is both sides of any issue. KO only shows his side of any issue and the finds only like minded people to "tell him how he is wrong." As if that were even possible. He will, read WILL have a breakdown. With luck it will be on TV for all of us to see.

The speech was lacking specifics. Any specifics of how he is going to do things. He said he was going to do this and that and this and that. But not one time did he tell us how he was going to do any of the this' and thats. Of course it was a convention speech. But he has yet to give any real specifics on how he is going to do anything. Because he has yet to accomplish anything in his life other then being elected in Ill in a Dem controlled machine, it is hard to tell how he is going to accomplish anything.”

“Don't fret. I believe that Obama's message of unity is NOT to be construed solely as his willingness to compromise with Republicans. Note in his speeches that he refers to members of the G.O.P. that have broken ranks and supported him as "disillusioned Republicans." His message of unity, in my view, seeks to revitalize our dysfunctional democracy through a campaign and a way of governing in which citizens have an active role. Consider that his campaign has amassed the contributions of 1.5 million donors, which is record-breaking. That is true unity.

He owes the unprecedented grassroots support of his campaign to the most powerful weapon against those who would harm our democracy: truth.”

“My idea of unity is an obliterated Republican Party. It is a sad state affairs when, come election time, Americans must decide to vote either for a party of corruption and with fascist tendencies, or, simply, the other party. Any public opinion survey shows that a majority of Americans have liberal values (e.g., oppose invasion of privacy, oppose pre-emptive war, support universal health care, support government regulation of belligerent corporations). However, ever since the passage of the Civil Rights Act, we have been divided into red and blue states, for obvious reasons. A true unity ticket will exclude any member of the current Republican Party. Case closed.”
