DSCC's Menendez: Democrats Are 'Absolutely Not' Dropping Like Flies

DSCC's Menendez: Democrats Are 'Absolutely Not' Dropping Like Flies

Commented Jan 06, 2010 at 20:48:57 in Politics

“"That will be very clear to the electorate."

The only thing that is becoming crystal clear to the electorate is that very few of the people on either side of the aisle are doing their jobs or representing us and we've got to replace many of you at the earliest opportunity.

What has become clear is that we cannot count on our Congress or president for change and any change in this country will have to come from the bottom up.

What has become clear is that the US treasury has been taken hostage by loose cannons who are handing it over to their friends in broad daylight (friends who will compensate them for this favor).

What is clear is that the US taxpayer's treasury, the middle class and the dollar is being drained and destroyed---whether by bailouts to banks, new rash decisions for taxpayer funded scanner machines at airports that are expensive (but no better than inexpensive dogs), and a health care bill that hands over American wallets to a health care interests that Congress gave the ability to overcharge whatever they like so they don't have to compete for a living like the rest of Americans.

The new American work ethic is to take what is someone else's and lobby to twist the laws so you don't go to jail and can delude yourself into thinking you're any different than a common criminal.”

“Effective "change" has always come from the bottom up...but be careful of what you ask for...one should and would hate to see another type of KKK/hate group (which propped up after the failure of Reconstruction ("change" from the top) spring up. There are a lot of bellicose comments on this thread...really, the "government" is the "people" by majority vote. If one doesn't like the "government" then one should vote and VOLUNTEER for the candidate that closest resembles one's own ideology.”

“I can no longer buy into this blame the other party routine.

Hmm,....all the two parties DO somehow manage to agree upon and get done is war, no-string taxpayer bailouts for banks and soon another Wealth Care bill for the health industry.

They just never can manage to get enough votes to get anything done when it comes to any significant measures to protect the American people and make real, positive change.

It's really starting to look like nothing more than a tired game of musical chairs and good cop, bad cop that occurs between two parties who all collect campaign financing from the very same large interests.

Lots of liberal and conservative sounding speeches, but the end results are very similar whether we've got Republican or Democrats in control.

If one looks at the patterns, it seems that even if the Republicans SAID they were for consumer protection, the Dems just somehow wouldn't manage to get the votes and would come up with just enough defectors to kill it.”

“I tilt liberal, but I"ve got to say, who on earth do you think has the majority? And how much improvement are you seeing? Looking forward to the Wealth Care bill coming down the pike? I know the insurance companies are---their stocks are soaring through the roof! Banks are still free to do exactly what they did that almost took the economy down, etc.

This knee-jerk attitude and "other party" blame scam is the very reason nothing has changed. It's called divide and conquer the American people. It gives both parties the excuse they need to deliver absolutely nothing significant except speeches that sound good, bailouts to banks and wars.

Instead of blaming the GOP and the "other party" for everything, Americans from both sides (most of whom will both be on the losing end of this), let's try something new: let's come together in numbers too big for Congress to ignore to force some change!”

RitaS replied on Jan 05, 2010 at 00:20:27

“I personally think that those who are liberal, those who value humans over corporations, are the majority, it's just a matter of getting them to the voting poles to voice their opinions. Improvement may be slow, given the fiasco of past 8 Bush yrs, but at least it's a start.

If you truly think that our current health care system is the best in the world for all Americans, perhaps you need to talk to those who 'can't afford' the 'for profit company's' exorbitant costs.

As for the 'regulation' of the banking industry both parties have to take the blame. Any & all 'new' regulation are completely & unfortunately determined by those 'who give the most money'.

Until the US 'revises' how it's politicians are funded for their elections, we will be controlled by those who have the 'most money', namely the corporate/million/billion people.”

Reminds me of how much all of us have in common, and what a waste it is that Americans in particular have allowed the media and status quo interests to divide and conquer so many who call themselves liberal or conservative.

If we could only remember how much we have in common and how many of the same interests we share, we would come together in numbers too big for Congress to ignore.

That's the seed of change and social progress right there in this video---focusing on, embracing and working with our many similarities rather than griping about our few differences.”

“I think the dem's only hope is to deliver health care that has a Real Public Option and resolves the fact that Americans are overcharged more than twice the going rate for health care due to anti-trust exemptions for insurance, other giveaways and artificial price inflation.

And I don't even think that will do it unless Real Reform kicks in pronto (not years from now as planned) so Americans are able to see whether it really is reform and how it plays out in their own lives. Of course if "reform" doesn't kick in for years, then when the next election rolls around, we'll never know if it's reform they passed and it will be very difficult to justify reelecting the same people based on blind faith.”

2009: The Things I Want to Forget (Part Two)

Commented Jan 01, 2010 at 18:46:20 in Home

“Brilliant and novel idea!

Let's all--both liberals and conservatives--stop walking into the divide and conquer trap set for us by the media and the corporate interests who are so successful at compromising our power to create change by distracting and dividing us.

Let's no longer foolishly divert our attention from the real culprits by wasting our time blaming everything on the "other party" while the real culprits (from both parties) pull the trucks up to the treasury, load up and drive off with our middle class.

Above all, let's all come together in numbers too big for Congress to ignore on all the issues we DO agree upon. We liberals and conservatives have so many interests that are the same--- if only people would use their common sense and not allow the media or the status quo party spokespersons to distract them from that fact.

Let's no longer sit back and just accept that what anybody else says is all true ,or that all people from one particular viewpoint or party are all wrong. Instead, let's use our own experiences and common sense to make judgments, let's listen to all the different perspectives we can find and let's think for ourselves.”

A Lesson for Obama: President Kennedy's Stand Against the Steel Industry

Commented Dec 31, 2009 at 08:56:47 in Politics

“"... the American people will find it hard, as I do, to accept a situation in which a tiny handful of steel executives whose pursuit of private power and profit exceeds their sense of public responsibility can show such utter contempt for the interests of 185 million Americans." [Quoted in Robert Dallek, An Unfinished Life, p. 485.] "

"Can anyone imagine President Barack Obama saying anything like this about the economic crisis and the wars requiring sacrifice and how unconscionable the health insurance and pharmaceutical industries are behaving today against the national interest?"

Yes, I can imagine it and I truly thought he'd take this opportunity we gave him to go down as one of our most beloved presidents ever. But President Obama has shown it is very unlikely he'll take a stand on much.

"In 1962, John F. Kennedy was heavy handed in his response to the steel industry. You could even say (accurately) that he abused his executive power. But he did it for the right reasons and as a result it was a politically popular heavy-handedness."

Kennedy might have found a more creative --and legal --way to approach the problem. Once a good president does something like this for the right reason, the way is paved for a bad president to do even worse for the wrong reasons.”

nightwind928 replied on Jan 02, 2010 at 10:54:42

“To simply embrace legality as a reason for doing nothing, or worse, the wrong thing and allowing those in power to abuse that power for their own greedy ends is not a valid argument. Today, grassroots society faces a problematic future that threatens to destroy the fabric of our culture because of the avarice of a few who's greed knows no bounds. They are not interested in the good of the nation, only personal gain and must be reigned in or they will continue to scourge Mainstreet America at will. Their lawyers use legal chicanery and their lobbiest, political bribery as tools to advance their aims. When someone with the ability to hold them in check uses that power to prevent their abuse of the general public, the rightwingers cry out in horror that it is legally wrong to do so. Power can be used for good or abused for the wrong reasons. To say that using it for right and necessary reasons is dangerous because it could be abused later is like arguing that driving a car is wrong because you could have a wreck someday. Sometimes you have to step over a line to do the right thing. It takes the right person to know when that time is. Are you that person Mr. President? Jack Kennedy was.”

jcwtts1 replied on Jan 01, 2010 at 14:17:18

“Utter nonsense. I can't believe the now now now whining of the left. Are you guys kidding me? The President won't take a stand on much. He gets 4 years in case you didn't know. And becuase he didn't crush the financial industry the year it almost DIED doesn't mean that there won't be meaningful reform. Just fing amazing.
