White House Says Obamacare Politics 'Are In A Different Phase Now'

White House Says Obamacare Politics 'Are In A Different Phase Now'

Commented Apr 2, 2014 at 22:47:55 in Politics

“News flash - 7 million was the break even point that was supposed to be new insureds (not new Medicare or people that lost it because of the law like my son and some good friends of ours did) in order for the plan to break even. And per the CBO, the 7 million number was to include at least a 40 percent number of so called healthy or young individuals. That was the magical number that the administration and democrats promised would be hit by the end of the sign up period. So I guess they magically hit the number but as a taxpayer who's footing billions for this plan, aren't you interested in knowing that your money was spent wisely and that the plan is going to success? If so, then it's an obvious question to ask how many of the 7 million are young and healthy and how many of the 7 million have paid. If you don't care, then keep doing what your doing and rake up the deficits.”

ramflo on Apr 3, 2014 at 00:02:40

“The 7M does not include expanded Medicaid or 24-26 year old dependents. Sorry to hear his insurance company dropped him - they've been doing that to many people, for a long time. Personally, I know family members and friends who have been helped by the ACA and some who claim to have been hurt but refuse to research the ACA. Now, I am sure the Federal, State, and the market based insurance companies will provide the "how many have paid" number, once the applications have been processed, bills have been sent out and payments have been made. You want fake numbers, tune in to fox. I care more than you think. I care about Americans who prior to the ACA were denied health insurance because of preexisting conditions or insurance profit margin limits. I care about Americans having access to preventative medical care which they do not get at ERs. I care about hard working Americans not having to go bankrupt because they or their children get sick. I care about Americans who lose their insurance because the "job creators" shipped their jobs to China. I also care about how the right wing propaganda media repeatedly trot out people claiming to have been hurt by the ACA only to find out that they were lying or uninformed. And, I care about my tax dollars being used to subsidize those who don't need it, at the expense of those who do.”

“My son and I went to sign him up for Obamacare as he lost his company provided insurance offered through the major restaurant chain he works for cause they cut his hours to part time 30 hours or less and so we put him back on my plan but now he turns 27 in 2 months. We were shocked at the sticker price for a bronze plan with annual premiums of 2700 (he's single with no dependents) but here is the kicker, another 5 K in annual deductibles so he's basically out of pocket for 8K when he only makes 29K a year (25K after taxes). Are you kidding me? I told him to self insure and setup a HSA account and have his employer deposit 200 per month directly into the account so he never sees it and it's pre tax. I hear they are supposed to be going up even more. Who can afford this stuff? So here's a question, "if you self insure should you have to pay the penalty"? Technically you are insured or is it rigged so you have to get a plan through a government approved insurance company? What the?”

mineralmom on Apr 2, 2014 at 23:38:00

“I don't know where you live, but when I put your data (age 27, 29k income) into a calculator for my zip code, the price for a bronze plan was $729. per year and a silver plan was $2355. per year.”

Murice on Apr 2, 2014 at 22:56:25

“You're kidding right? You think putting $200 in a savings account makes you "self insured"?

You get cancer or have an accident and the medical bill is $100,000, And what, $600 is your "insurance" ?”

“When I was 28 I tore a ligament in my knee and ended up getting a blood clot in my lung from the surgery (never had a health issue before that). It cost was over $100,000. If you think he will be saving money by simply putting a few bucks in an HSA account, then you are pointing him down the wrong track. Be careful please.”

“Ken - if we go by your opinion, then why not get rid of the "Debt Ceiling" all together and just BORROW as much as we need when we need to. This isn't money that is owed to ourselves and it's not just on paper, it has to come from somewhere. The video you posted showed who is the biggest holder of the debt and it's Social Security which is a private program that was implemented by the government but is not funded by the government - you know, the entitlement program that one day I'd like to think would give me back some of the money I've paid into it all of these years. The next largest holders of our debt are foreign governments such as China who buy the debt via government issued bonds. They earn the interest on that debt that we now pay. You don't seem to feel our national debt is an issue like President Obama did when he was a US Senator back in 2006 and stated it would be unpatriotic and a failure of leadership to raise the debt ceiling. Some other harmful aspects of the National debt - it weakens our credit rating, raises the cost of borrowing money and lowers the interest rates on the entire bond industry. Maybe rewatch your video starting around the 3:30 mark with "However....."”

Ken Maunder on Oct 17, 2013 at 21:36:05

“The debt must be measured against GDP and to some degree, our assets. I mean, let's face it, if we sold Alaska to the Chinese, how much would it be worth? I would have to think at least 10 trillion dollars, and more like 16 trillion. What if we sold the island of Hawaii to the Japanese? That could easily net another 10 trillion. The U.S. is so far from broke it's crazy to pretend like it is.”

“Appreciate the video Ken but debt is debt and by definition it means "money is owed to someone or something" - that I think any of us can understand and it's basic economics 101. The daily interest on that debt is now 1.14 billion per day so that is where our hard earned money is going. As a side note, I'm an independent and voted for Obama the first time around but not the 2nd time as I felt Obama is just like all of the other politicians and did not keep many of his campaign promises such as balanced budgets which he critisized Bush for. Note that I voted for Bush the first time but not the 2nd. When speaking of our national debt and raising the debt ceiling - here is a quote from 2006 while Obama was an Illinois senator and did not want to raise the debt ceiling and was quoted as saying "It would be unpatriotic and a failure of leadership".”

“People and media put to much faith in polls. Having said that, I'm glad that the House is finally holding Obama and the dems feet to the fire over the fiscal mess they have gotten us into. Under Obama, the debt has more than doubled to nearly 17 Trillion dollars. That's $165K for every working American. So the fact is we are broke and have to stop spending. Along comes Obama proposing Obamacare with a proposed cost of 900 Billion to implement it. That figure is now estimated to be over 1.3 Trillion. Honestly, we'd have been better off putting that money into an account that could have paid the claims for any unisureds. So bottom line is, it's time to reign in the spending and entitlements which is as I recall what President Obama said he was going to do during both of his campaigns but has unfortunatley not happened.”

Ken Maunder on Oct 12, 2013 at 14:51:20

“You don't understand the debt or how govt works. We are not broke and most of that 17 trillion we owe is to ourselves for future outlays of social security. Here is a lovely, funny, and informative post explaining our national debt and why it is a terrible idea to threaten our stability.

William Quigley on Oct 11, 2013 at 20:43:11

“I think that 1.3 trillion figure is the cost of the embattled F35 joint force bomber before it's fully deployed. And what about the projected cost of the unnecessary Iraq war with a final project cost of up to 2 trillion dollars. This president's budget request have been the most moderate since Eisenhower. Most of the budget is preordained by previous legislation not associated with the President. Like building tanks that the military doesn't want because the are built in some Republican district in Ohio, only to be put into long term storage in Nevada. I could go on, but you get the point.”

“It's not guns, knives, bombs or anything that can be used as a weapon such as a car if one wants to, that is the problem. The problem is that society's sensativity to violence has been lowered. And the reason that has happened is because we've allowed violence to become an acceptable form of entertainment. This is evidenced through all forms of media including Television shows, commercials and believe it or not even cartoons, Movies of all types (not just action and thrill movies anymore), video games including childrens video games as I have seen them and my kids have them. So eliminating Guns is not the answer and it's our right to own them as the forfathers intented . Please stop the nonsense of calling for gun control everytime one is used in an inappropriate situation. People are killed ever day by guns on our streets over senseless reasons such as drugs and crime and those bad guys will continue to get their guns if you take them away from law abiding citizens.”

Worst part is that it won't be "National healthcare" because when it's implemented - most Americans (the poor) will be provided a basic insurance plan that provides less coverage and higher deductables and premiums while many others (like Federal employees and who knows that will end?) will get a so called "Cadillac" plan.”

In all surveys, people support all of the individual pieces of Obamacare - except the Individual Mandate, without which the system doesn't work.
That's general ignorance - it's asking for something for free.
If you want to complain, complain about the Individual Mandate - but it was an attempt to get around objections to Single Payer, so IF the Individual Mandate were prevented from taking effect, Single Payer would likely get pushed through.”

You are zipped in. Most wealthy canadians do not go to the USA for normal medical care;  if they need something like a knee replacement and don't want to wait they may but I don't believe they go for standard care.   The only reason you have got such great service is that millions of others did not have health insurance.  But in time new drs will train to fill the increasing need too.  Obama care may not be perfect now but its better and it can be 'tweeked'. ”

Or Romney who wants to give more money back to the wealthy, which will then allow them to invest more of it into stocks, bonds, their own companies and other business opportunities which would lead to lower unemployment and a robust economy. Comes down to - shall we invest in taking care of the lower income of society by increasing the size of government to do so or invest in the higher incomes of society cutting government costs to give them more money to invest and spend? “Obama has REDUCED the deficit. Romney wants to give tax breaks when we still have a deficit to pay off - that will only increase it, no matter what he says about closing loopholes. Romney wants to increase the defense budget by 2 TRILLION dollars - Obama is cutting it. He is more fiscally conservative, and has spent LESS MONEY than Republican presidents like Reagan and Bush. Romney says his tax breaks will increase jobs and boost the economy, but Reagan and Bush both said the same thing, and after the tax cuts, NOTHING HAPPENED!

But Republicans are still going to accuse the Democrats of spending, when they are the ones who run the country into deficits every time. Romney and his rich friends will get their tax breaks, and they will continue borrowing money from China so they can spend it on new toys for the military even when we are ENDING two wars.

His budget numbers don't work, unless he taxes the middle class. So if you want the country to continue to decrease our deficits, voting Democratic is your best bet. republicans DON"T CARE how much of your money, or your grandchildren's money, they spend in giving their rich friends tax breaks and corporate welfare like 4 Billion to oil companies, that the president opposed.”

“Tax and spend - same ol routine for the Dems. Rob from Peter to pay Paul. Where does it end. Wealthy individuals need places to invest their money and hence they create business opportunitites which in turn can create jobs and additional tax revenue. When government takes an unproportionate amount of someones wealth to use if for expanding govenment and lining politicians pockets, we as a society simply become more dependant on government and the need to take more from wealthy individuals - which someday may be you or me. At least that used to be the American dream. Oh that's righ - Obama doesn't believe in the American dream anymore. Tax and spend - argh (sic of it).”

“Tell it to your fans. Oooops, sorry. You don't have any fans. Hmmmmmm I wonder why. When you become a indentured servant to Romney or his sons maybe then you will understand that you have no idea what you're talking about. Please stop listening to so much Faux "News". When will you understand that no one can become rich without the rest of us. When willl you get it that the middle class is the demand engine that makes OUR economy work. Please get your GED and read more.”
