“So, how does that correlate with homosexuality? Is it possible to be able to choose your gender and NOT your sexuality? or vice versa? To me, if they can CHOOSE how to define the gender for themselves than they can CHOOSE their sexual orientation as well.”

Tom Pinion on Dec 3, 2013 at 10:04:16

“Often times gay people do not immediately realize what their true sexuality is until much later. Some are under very hard societal pressure to conform and live in a state of denial, this usually will not last as denying ones nature and living a lie is a hell that cannot go on forever. The CHOICE for gay people is whether or not to live your life true to your sexual orientation, which one is born with, NOT whether or not you are homosexual.”

“sexist much? Why should HE have to support HER AFTER their marriage failed?!?! SEXIST!!!”

Sara Keenan on Dec 3, 2013 at 11:49:21

“Why? Because it was a 20 year marriage in which they adopted children, which she curtailed her career and earning potential to stay home and raise. Every state in the union provides spousal support for a stay at home spouse when the spouses agree one will stay at home and raise children. I support the same for a stay at home husband in a long-term marriage, and as a family court paralegal I have helped husbands in this situation get the support they deserve as well. That is not sexist. It is fairness. :-)”

“huh? Why would they need special laws? I think what you said is the worst possible way to handle it. Your wanting to label them, highlight their differences, and then make them feel like less of a person. Best advice, leave it alone, do nothing. Let an intersex person live a normal life without being made to feel like a mistake. QUIT THIS EVERYTHING MUST HAVE A TITLE Junk and just live! If intersex people want what you said, then let THEM say they want it and be treated as normal people. They AREN"T mentality handicapped ya know.....”

IVFDad on Dec 3, 2013 at 20:41:45

“I think you misunderstood. The lack of laws creates awkward situations. The individual lives as they see fit, however, the laws do not reflect that and thats the gap we have to bridge. The laws are not in sync with social structure. For example, in most countries intersex marriages are illegal. If marriages are illegal, what happens to immigration rights for intersex based on spousal immigration? Next comes fertility rights. US Immigration laws require a "biological link" to have a child as an immigrant, how does an intersex person technically and legally achieve this? Instead we need laws that address these issues - marriage, children, immigration, right to live. It is not about labelling...the current laws have already done that...it is about undoing that and the effects it is having on intersex/DSD families. You would have to go through the legal system as intersex honestly to understand what I am talking about. Of course, the other option is to lie to the legal system which is committing crimes and possibly hurting other innocents.”

“HUH? That makes NO sense. She doesn't need to know about all of that and hey, when she wants to have kids, let her find out THEN. WTF?!?!?! Do you not know how complicated the adoption process is? Its not impossible, but here in NC, it almost is.”

LTTR136 on Dec 3, 2013 at 10:37:09

“My sister knew from the age of 16, because of female problems, that she would not be able to have children and planned her life according to that knowledge. She adopted 2 kids and she accepted the knowledge and planed to do that from the time of her diagnosis. Claudia could have done the same and the angst would have been less without the added complication of an "Intersex" diagnosis.

Adoption is not always easy or cheap. Different states have different rules and standards. If a person wants a child badly enough they will go the extra mile. My advise would be to be careful what you wish for. Babies are like kittens or puppies. They are adorable when they are little but they sometimes grow up to become people you might not especially like. Unconditional love is a myth. My observation of the younger generation tells me that having children can be vastly over-rated.”

“How are labels harmful? I thank Jebus that the gas pump label tells me which is gasoline and which is diesel. Some people need to just suck it up and put some effort forward and TRY. Get OFF their butts, OFF their smart phones, OFF FB/Internet AND go do something productive. Make their life what they want it to be and QUIT waiting for others to do everything for them but judging by your name, I doubt you know what any of that means.”

“Wow... She knows VERY little about what is going on with herself, and I think she only has HERSELF to blame. I noticed she said it was "before" the internet age... I HIGHLY doubt that, but there were/are ways of getting educated BESIDES the internet! That's just a sad excuse. Before the internet became such a dominant force, people used things called libraries to become educated on certain topics. "Ooo I can't do anything unless someone spoon feeds it to me..." 10 bucks says she is a democrat. I'm sorry, but if a doctor tells me I have something and then doesnt go into more detail about it, I'm going home to do all that I can to research what the doc said I had... I'm NOT going to use the excuse "oo the internet wasn't big yet.”

egoldenb on Dec 2, 2013 at 12:36:27

“She wasn't using an excuse. I can pretty much guarantee that there was no information about what it meant to be intersex at the library either. There's very few information about it anywhere, even NOWADAYS. I knew someone who was born a hermaphrodite. Basically, she was intersex, too, and I'm the only person on these comments that I've seen who says this. Why? Not because there aren't a lot of intersex people out there, but because most of them are too ashamed to talk about it because there's stigma. And because they are ashamed, information does not get passed around about it. My friend doesn't tell anybody but me that she's intersexed, so I know there's probably a lot of other people hiding it.”

hellyon3too on Dec 2, 2013 at 11:47:48

“This is not a political issue, and you should save your political bias for a story on politics. It's unnecessary to drag politics into everything, and it's hateful. Just stop.

I'd also like to point out that how much information one can find at the local library depends a great deal on the community where one lives. Some communities have very small libraries with limited funds, and it can be quite difficult to do research, especially if you're not quite sure what to look for.”

Hida on Dec 2, 2013 at 11:03:33

“Intersex is so stigmatized in this society that intersex babies are STILL being medically "corrected" (and obviously not b/c THEY ask for it) in ways so harmful that they were condemned by the US Special Rapporteur on Torture earlier this year. I myself didn't even know I was intersex until I was almost 27 and read about it in a newspaper article, even though I could SEE my physical difference (I had no "normalizing" medical treatment). Why? B/C intersex isn't talked about, or taught in school, etc. so I just didn't know "what" I was. And once I did know, why would i want to talk about it and subject myself to someone like you making mean-spirited, critical remarks about who I am. Instead of celebrating that she's brave enough to speak out about such a personal issue in order to help make the world safer for other intersex people, you choose to vehemently criticize & blame her for not knowing more about a topic that as you can see few people know much about yet. check yourself before you wreck yourself --unless of course your goal is actually being a harmful presence on the planet, which in that case, congrats, you're doing an AWESOME job!”

Abraham Lincoln used an executive order in order to fight the Civil War, Woodrow Wilson issued one in order to arm the United States just before it entered World War I, and Franklin Roosevelt approved Japanese internment camps during World War II with an executive order. “a "waiver?" That requires..... Congressional notification
Not later than the date of the exercise of a waiver under subsection (a) of this section, the President shall notify the appropriate congressional committees of the waiver or the intention to exercise the waiver, together with a detailed justification thereof. Plus waivers only work when other countries are involved as well I think...In general
Subject to subsection (b) of this section, the President may waive the application of any of the actions described in paragraphs (9) through (15) of section 6445 (a) of this title (or commensurate action in substitution thereto) with respect to a country, if the President determines and so reports to the appropriate congressional committees that—
(1) the respective foreign government has ceased the violations giving rise to the Presidential action;
(2) the exercise of such waiver authority would further the purposes of this chapter; or
(3) the important national interest of the United States requires the exercise of such waiver authority.”
