What Obama Really Meant When He Said 'If You Like Your Plan, You Can Keep It'

What Obama Really Meant When He Said 'If You Like Your Plan, You Can Keep It'

Commented Nov 2, 2013 at 06:56:14 in Politics

“So what happens when a person who has a low level of coverage gets a life threatening illness? Let's also assume this person doesn't have the Koch Brothers' income. Will he or she still think that lousy plan is a good idea? Will he or she conclude that it's just time to die, and that's okay? Most likely not. The purpose of insurance is to enable people to get appropriate medical treatment when it is necessary. If they have inadequate insurance, they will not be able to pay for their treatment and other people will have to pay for it one way or another. So, all of the individual choice you are advocating really doesn't translate into individual responsibility. Here's a perfect example: when conservative icon Ayn Rand got sick, she took Medicare and Social Security, which she railed against for years. She didn't think the government was so bad then.”

“Implicit in the President's statement that people could keep insurance they "liked" was the reasonable belief that people who had "I hope and pray I don't get sick" plans masquerading as health insurance plans would want better coverage. Alas, that makes too much sense, so here we are.”

“So a person should not be able to choose what plan he/she wants?

What else do you think a person should have no choice over?

Not much on a person choosing for him/herself, are you?

I understand, the government knows best and should make all decisions for you.

THAT is the core difference between liberals and conservatives.

obama lied, plain and simple.”

“Those big money organizations created this nightmare. They wanted these right wing idealogues. Now they are upset that the extreme people they put in office don't know when to quit. Maybe now they will realize that, if they advocate destroying the government, someone might actually take them up on it.”

Barometer on Oct 7, 2013 at 06:43:04

“The big money organizations aren't upset about this nightmare - their members will make money out of the mess. Anarchy, like most bad ideas, always benefits someone. They worked hard to dismantle the systems and agencies that prevented them from looting what remains of the common wealth, and now they have just about made that ruin permanent.”

He still comments on political and social issues online and he is still very engaged and insightful.”

“You need to watch some of the reruns because there were several episodes when Claire would talk about being tired. Also, the main focus of the show was family.”

lifeandvictory on Jul 12, 2013 at 07:15:51

“There was many, many an episode where Claire was show to be tired and yes, in some instances, as a direct cause of the children. She even took a vacation away from them. Cliff was ALWAYS on call. One must understand, he was an obstetrician. They work, when the women they work for so to speak, "need them". In other words, if baby isn't crowning, try not to come a frowning. Besides, for the other parts of obstetrics, the early stages, he had his office downstairs in his house. The show touched on everything dude, everything. That's hat made it what it was and is and still can't be duplicated.”

“Ms. Kumar's letter shows that narrow ideas about appropriate behavior for women are not limited to celebrity worship. Beyonce is an entertainer. She has chosen to focus on music and acting for her career. There is nothing wrong with that. Not everyone will be a scientist or a business executive. Not everyone even wants to do those things. There is no shame in that, and it doesn't mean that they are failing to use their intellect or to live up to their potential.”

It is a uniquely American idea to believe that the government should cater to the rich because everyone has the potential to get rich one day. That has seldom (if ever) been less true than it is today.”
