“Well, thank you Senator Alexander. It's not like there aren't enough negative stereotypes of Tennessee, but you had to add one. That picture makes clear that you have a hard time keeping your tongue in your mouth, let alone that tongue being civil. Like Mitch McConnell, Lamar Alexander is the product well past its "best by" date, and retirement would be a gesture of dignity. Unlike a Republican, I'm not holding my breath.”

Third Way Op-Ed Writer Says Elizabeth Warren's Backing Of Social Security Plan Was The 'Final Moment'

Commented Dec 9, 2013 at 02:00:39 in Politics

“Good for Warren! It's not that she's channeling wisdom from on high, it's that she has the sense to do her job. Part of her job is to challenge legislation which doesn't benefit the American people, or to propose legislation which does benefit the people without creating an undue burden. She's not the only one to suggest removing the cap on FICA. She's not the only one to suggest real regulation of our financial services so that the taxpayer doesn't become the permanent guarantor of fixed minimum profit margins. How is this "radical"? If it is radical, then that would mean that those who wish to discredit Warren are acknowledging, in their cowardly way, that the regulatory system really is rigged to reward criminal behavior, as well as nationalizing private sector risk. It's time the Dems started an internal pushback against this fawning and obsequious faction in their midst.”

“No. No to this, no to any more of this expansion of corporate "rights," no to having two political parties pursuing the same oligarchic policies. Just because we have two major political parties does not mean that they will always exist. The GOP is already in a crisis, and the Dems may find their corporatist wing wiped out. The US has endured more self-inflicted injuries from these pursuits than any other major country has. It's up to the American people to bring these "negotiations" to a swift, merciful end. In every society, there is a point at which people refuse to be compliant, and it seems lost on both of our major parties that the American people won't always be as compliant as they've been. In fact, the continued push to benefit corporations and to rig the system just might result in a hard left turn.”

starks23 on Dec 8, 2013 at 22:04:48

“Here's the thing - we're increasingly in a world where most large corporations are operating at an multinational level - the changes in these rules allow for these entities to operate more streamline and autonomous from the bureaucracy of government functions. This trade pacts allow for increase innovation through concentration of capital, gets the products faster from producer to consumer and maintain the integrity quality of said products. The key will be the authority instilled on the international regulatory system and the ability of governments to effectively negotiate tariffs that effect their constituents economic needs (costs). Welcome to the 21st century and a new international system - now come down off your cliff - everything will be okay.”

“This is still less than what the GOP and the US Chamber of Commerce have sought and continue to seek. So please explain how it is that Obama is worse than those forces. Also, just because a thing is proposed does not make it a fait accompli, and the failure of the public to rise up and express its discontent is exactly that--a failure. Just because the leadership of both major parties endorse this idiocy is no excuse for the people to acquiesce to it.”

“"It is a discrete business, conducted quietly among a relatively small number of people who know one another."

No, it's a discreet business. Not looking to spend my life policing someone's writing, but seriously, that's a mistake that looks like a question from the PSAT. There's not much excuse for a professional writer to miss that and not correct it. Something which is discrete can be separated into parts; the context of the sentence is the opposite of that ("small number of people who know one another"). I know it's not the worst error anyone could make, but it is annoying for a professional writer to make such a silly writing mistake. There, I feel less cranky already.”

“Y'know...this whole conflation of vagina with labia and/or vulva is ridiculous and painful. The vagina is inside, unless it's prolapsed, and there was a time when the average American would learn which parts were where when they were in school. Not med school, not college, but in junior high. We've managed to shift into an approximation of an 11-year-old boy--fixated on girl parts, but too damned ignorant to know what's where. It's a bounty of mass ignorance.”

Commented Dec 8, 2013 at 15:45:51 in World

“Well, considering that the Olympics were insufficiently politicized in 1936, there has ever since been the fear of making the same mistake again. Sochi is a human rights violation on its face, and the IOC has proven to be completely comfortable with that as long as they get their money from licensing and merchandise. The IOC has done more to make Sochi a political matter than any other party, because it's the IOC which refuses to draw a line with Putin or any other part of the Russian government. The event has been a feeding frenzy of graft and theft, and it's not done yet. Beijing wasn't close to being the farce that Sochi is. Sure, athletes coming from around the world, yadda yadda...but if you're gay, you could find yourself in serious legal trouble just for being gay and entering Russia. And it's all thanks to the self-interested IOC.”

“Keep in mind the three facts. One, Ukraine as it exists today is at the expense of other states--or non-states--to the west. Two, Ukraine has long been dominated by Russia, in almost every way. Three, Kiev and Lviv are Ukrainian nationalist and Western-looking, where the Crimean Peninsula and the Donbas have a long history of being focused on Russia. My gut tells me that Russia wouldn't mind a civil war in Ukraine, with Russia effectively claiming the eastern quarter or third of the country. This might be the price of true Ukrainian independence.”

“So a shortfall in Federal funding becomes relevant to ACA--at least in your fantasy world, where the Federal government becomes the sole healthcare provider in the country. In your world, it's fiscally responsible to rely on obsolete data when you know it's obsolete. In your head, it makes more sense to spend $60 billion to pay for Sandy repairs than it would have to pay maybe $200 million for accurate flood risk data. It's a good thing that you aren't in a position of responsibility, because that approach would ruin your family and any employer in a heartbeat.”

“Why do people like this baker do such a horrible job of vetting the Christian credentials of their clientele until the gays show up? No talk about a fantastic new translation of Ecclesiastes? No bragging about going to a very intense retreat? No discussion of church construction projects, or whose Sunday school brunch is the best? No, because they don't give a damn about the Bible, Jesus or the cross until it's a convenient pretext to be a bigot. Some people here are looking hard for ways to claim that no law should compel a business to provide service where the owner doesn't want to. Well, we went through that in the past--Jews and Catholics not allowed to move into a given neighborhood, blacks denied mortgages to keep a neighborhood white, women paid half as much for the same work because "she doesn't have a family to support." All of these actions have been recognized as wrong, and not just wrong, but innately unfair and redolent of a pointless and gratuitous bigotry. If you're willing to see another American denied their equality under the law, then why should any of us have it?”

“I have to say, you might benefit from being a target of discrimination yourself. Perhaps then you would connect the two ideas--an injustice against you is no more and no less unjust than against someone else. Discrimination is wrong. It shouldn't happen to you, or me, or anyone else. But if you don't get this, why should anyone rise to defend your rights when the day comes that you are the target of discrimination? What makes YOU innately deserving of an equality that you would freely deny to someone else?”

Some women vote GOP because they think they believe those things, not realizing that no, they really don't, until forced to face the consequences of that vote.
