CNN Slaps the 'Ish' Out of Roland S. Martin

Posted: 02/09/2012 11:25 am

Let's get right to it, shall we: CNN fumbled the GLAAD vs. Roland S. Martin situation badly. The indefinite suspension yesterday of Martin as a commentator for the cable news network due to some of his "tweets" during Superbowl Sunday is something we should all consider carefully because the ramifications could have a severe chilling effect on journalist everywhere, who will find it hard to balance social media banter & fun with followers, as opposed to on-air, paid written commentary for networks and news outlets.

My concern about what has happened with CNN is that the cable network bowed to pressure from GLAAD that Martin's "Barbershop Talk" Man tweets were somehow a) targeted at gay men and b) that he was trying to incite violence against Gays because he used phrases like #TeamWhipdatAss and "ish" which is Roland's term for "shit." The problem with what GLAAD has done here, is that they have been able to tell the world what Martin meant, when he himself was very clear on Twitter on SuperBowl Sunday that he was talking about soccer (which he considers a lesser sport as a avid football fan), and he was poking fun at men who would wear H&M underoos (as Martin called them). Folks, if you know Roland, you know he pokes fun at everyone, regardless of race, class, gender. That is his brand.

While, Roland S. Martin is well known for his loud personality, gentlemanly ascots, flashy suits & ties, cowboy boots, big Texas belt buckles, candor, sense of humor, and his fiery political commentary, the longtime black journalist has been an outspoken advocate against violence of any kind, verbal assaults against black women (citing Jay Z's use of the "B" word in rap lyrics), hazing and physical violence on HBCU campuses by greek organizations or bands (most recently FAMU), and he has been a supporter of the fair and humane treatment of GAY Americans all of his life.

Martin is not, however, a supporter of gay marriage (as I am not), but we all support civility, tolerance and inclusion of gay Americans in our society. I know Roland well. I am both a media colleague and close personal friend to he and his wife Rev. Jacquie Hood Martin. Mrs. Martin, who is an outspoken minister of the gospel and promoter of faith, found herself the subject of personal and severe attacks by some in the gay community via Twitter to such a degree that she had to shut her account down.

Martin, who hails proudly from Houston, Texas, became a household name during the 2008 campaign season as one of CNN's premiere pundits. He is also one of the nation's most prominent African-American male TV personalities and speakers. Hosting his own Sunday Show, Washington Watch on TV One and is a regular commentator on the Tom Joyner Morning Show. To lose his voice and big presence on TV during the 2012 campaign season would be a travesty for us all. Like Martin or not, he is "straight no-chaser" as the old folks like to say, and he brings clarity, intensity, and fun to the political coverage process.

This morning, Roland S. Martin finds himself in the middle of a controversy involving GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) which is an organization that is dedicated to the fair and humane treatment of gays, lesbians, transgender and bi-sexual Americans. Martin & GLAAD have agreed to meet to discuss the matter further. All of this started with Martin's tweets during Superbowl Sunday, which were targeted at the David Beckham H&M underwear line, and men showing up at Superbowl parties dressed in pink. Anyone who knows Martin, knows he is a "man's man." He is a Texan after all, and he is unabashedly opinionated whether on air or on social media. That is his brand.

After this whole incident blew up, as a journalist, myself, I took to calling many of the black men I know, who watched the superbowl to see what they thought about Martin's comments and they all agreed that Roland was being macho, he was being a guy who loves football, and it was cultural in that this is how "Bruahs" (as Martin likes to call his fellow black men) act during sporting events. In my household, we called it "playing the dozens." Roland likes to do that fairly often. But for GLAAD to suggest he was advocating violence against gays is just stunning. It is stunning and inaccurate at best.

In the final analysis, we as journalists, writers, Americans should be concerned when advocacy groups (liberal, conservative, gay or straight) have so much power that they can take the words of an individual and turn them on their head to further their political agenda. That is exactly what GLAAD has done in this instance. Instead of meeting with Martin in private to get clarity on what he meant, they went on the attack and pushed CNN to suspend Martin. Worse, is the fact that CNN suspended Martin for comments he made as a private citizen on Super Bowl Sunday. He was not on AIR making such comments, which might have been more understandable to reprimand him for. All in all, I think Martin will be allowed back on CNN, but not until he has eaten quite a bit of GLAAD crow, apologized (some more), and cowered himself to all of their demands. It makes me wonder, will we see the same Roland S. Martin we all know and love, or will we see a lesser, muted, more cautious man who had the "ish" slapped out of him.

I feel bad for Roland. If I were gay, lesbian. or whatever, I would be embarrassed that this group that is supposed to represent me, instigated his firing. Are we so weak, fragile, and thin skinned that comments as harmless as Rolands calls for a man to lose his job?

From here on out, gays will get to decide what offends christians, muslims what offends jews, women what offends men and whites what offends blacks. White or without jokes calling for violence.

Doesn't anyone see what's wrong with this picture. When I was 4 years old, Emmett Till was beaten to death for supposedly disrespecting a white woman. This year Roland Martin "jokes" about blacks whupping a guy dressed in pink and slapping the blank out of guys who like underwear commercials. Followed by a black on black beating in Atlanta where the victim was acting "gay", and there's an article on the site showing that something like 70% of the violence against gays is directed ay gays of color.

THIS CURRENT PLOY IS TO TAKE THE REAL ISSUE OFF OF CNN WHICH IS IT ONGOING ISSUES WITH NABJ AND THE NAACP WHICH HAVE/HAD BEEN INVESTIGATING THEM FOR A LONG TIME IN REFERENCE TO RACISM - RECALL THAT MANY NON AFRICAN AMERICANS HAD BEEN FIRED AND THIS MOST RECENT DIVERSION CLEARLY APPEARS TO BE RETALIATORY ON THEIR PART AND PROVES THAT CERTAIN GROUPS ARE DANGEROUS THATS STRAIGHT TALK.

Simply put, Roland should have used better terminology on twitter knowing that he's a representative of CNN. Please don't lose your job trying to be cute with any followers and no it wasn't professional to boot. As with any employer, there are rules. I can't walk in and start talking about slapping the "ish" outta anyone. There is a very low tolerance to what is perceived as "harassment", one that can get you in the same soup line as Roland.

I hope that Huffington Post will allow a reasonable rebuttal to Ms. Nelson's opinion piece, which is clearly colored by her friendship with Mr. Martin and his wife. As a gay man who has strongly supported the movement for civil rights for African Americans since childhood, I hope that there can be more dialogue between the LGBT community, the black community, and with black LGBT Americans. Maybe this can begin with Roland's meeting with GLAAD.

I will say my own opinion is that Roland Martins behavior, on-air and on Twitter, has exhibited homophobia and or insensitivity to the LGBT community, and certainly his Tweets on Sunday fall into that pattern.

I also will say that, contrary to Ms. Nelson's apparent contention that Roland Martin's tweets on Subday amounted to his own personal behavior, not to be subject to sanction by his employer, the fact that he Tweets to 95,000 followers and is a major cultural figure DOES make it CNN's business and I am glad he was suspended, clearly after some consideration by CNN.

DAMN those over-sensitive minority organizatiions, that GLAAD and that NAACP and that Anti-Defamation League, constantly insulted by insensitive, ill-thought, ill-timed, and mean-spirited remarks. What nerve!

Your article is based on the faulty premise that CNN is a journalism outlet. CNN is a for-profit commercial entity primarily. And as a commercial entity they are entirely correct to make hiring/firing decisions based on their perceptions of how those decisions might impact their bottom line.

Nonetheless, its important to keep in mind that Martin did not merely opine that he didn't agree with homosexuality, but more specifically called for violence. Even if done jokingly, the fact that he made that call to such potentially huge audience is irresponsible and reprehensible. You could make the argument he should be fired for showing such poor judgement, not because he's homophobic.

Ms. Nelson, your essay almost leaves me speechless.

You chide CNN and GLAAD for presuming to know what Roland Martin meant by his tweets, and then you go on to presume to tell us what he meant.

Do you really not have any 8 year olds on hand to point out what's wrong with that picture?

I don't give an "ish" what kind of Texan Martin purports to be, or what kind of "Man's Man" he purports to be - none of that is an excuse for his thinly veiled homophobic foolishness.

Are you not concerned when a journalist (yourself) has so so much power that they can take the words of an individual (Martin) and turn them on their head to further their political agenda (covering up for a homophobe).

That is exactly what Sophia Nelson has done in this instance.

It would make sense if we learned that the author herself endorses and accepts an anti-gay distortion of Christianity.

Your article is very true, but it doesn't change the fact that Martin's comments were indeed insulting to gay people and he should be reprimanded for that. It comes with the territory of being a public figure that you can't always say what you think.

You can say that his comments were insulting to gay people but his comments were not anti-gay nor homophobic.

For me personally, I thought the comments were clearly anti gay. I thought that even before I knew his wife was a minister and after finding that out, it is obvious his comments were anti gay. Clearly he thinks homosexuality is a sin because he is a christian. Actually, I feel that way too kinda, but the point is I'm not in a position where I have to be politically correct. He is.

Straight people don't get to decide what is anti-gay or homophobic just like white people don't get to decide what is racist. Certainly you can understand that. Certainly you've heard white people say racist things and then proceed to explain that it wasn't racist because they say so in spite of the fact that to black people it was racist. Are you gay? And how do you define homophobic?

I think he assumed that people following him would know he was joking. No one believes Roland wants violence against gays, not even GLAAD. Their job is act quickly to quell anything that may come across as denigrating. He knows that. If he wants to be a major player, he needs to figure that out quickly. He won't work again as a democratic commentator if gays believe he does not believe in gay causes. There is a litmus test. He thinks he can skirt it, but he can't. Is he on board or not? If not, he'll be discarded. Plain and simple. If he wants to think for himself, make offhanded jokes that may offend, and not speak favorably about gay issues at every given opportunity, he needs to find another job. It isn't to be had in liberal media. I think Roland is a nice guy. But, he needs to learn the party line and quickly. The correct response if he wants to stay is either, "Yes'm" or "Yes, sir". Otherwise CNN will find another talented black man who understands his place. His job is to make crude jokes about Republicans, find good things to say about the President, and understand and repeat the values of the democratic party. And value one is gay marriage and gay rights. If that doesn't match up to what he believes in, stop faking it and walk away. At least he'll still have his pride.

This whole situation is growing many layers. Was this attack based on his wife's ministry to assist those who have had gay lifestyles and have come to them to make a change? That is a bit annoying because if someone feels that they have made a decision to be gay, and they want to make a change to a heterosexual lifestyle, that should be their choice and there should be ministries and organizations that will assist them with that. People should have as much freedom to not be gay as they do TO be gay. I think that while the homosexual community would like for us to let them live and let live, they feel that we should give them the autonomy to silence people who don't agree with them. Thats a bit hypocritical.

Are we talking about a 35-year-old who goes to his pastor after one or two same-sex encounters and seeks guidance? That's a personal decision. Or are we're talking about a ministry that broadly peddles untruths about sexual orientation, such as, "It's a choice, not an orientation," or "You can change"? That's abuse.

Regimes of "gay therapy" are driven by religious dogma, not science or psychology--the practit
09:14 PM on 02/10/2012
Her ministry and other's like it or not "gay therapy." it is applying the biblical principles to everyday lifestyles. It is also for those individuals who decided that they do not want to be in that lifestyle. No one is making anyone do anything that they do not want to do. And please stop putting Christianity into a box. Learn the truth about it first and not by your intellect but from a open mind and heart before you criticize it. Just like you accuse Roland in attacking gays, stop stereotyping Christians and Christianity.

U gotta be kidding! Do u think a white journalist who thinks blacks should under go therapy to be white and made violent references in what he says is humor would not be suspended indefinitely?

Please. To characterize Mrs. Martin as a some completely innocent victim in this is intellectually dishonest. In fact, Jaquie Hood Martin dove headfirst into the fray, tweeting that the LGBT community "uses [black] history to gain their equality & then stabs the point man in the back. Don't ask us for nothing else."
08:04 AM on 02/10/2012
For Sophia Nelson to claim that Mrs Martin was "forced" to shut down her twitter account without explaining what he tweeted and without telling the readers that she "claimed" her twitter account had been hacked is irresponsible.

The fact is that GLAAD have expose themselves to be very intolerant with this over reaction to Roland tweets, it probably was calculated due to his wife position on the gay issue as a pastor it will be interesting to see how this plays out. It will also be interesting to see how Roland handle this, will he stand on good solid principle as a man or cave, wimple and be half of a man for the sake of money and his career.
07:06 AM on 02/10/2012
I do not believe GLAAD has exposed themselves to be intolerant. Roland gave them the tweet to use against him. When I read the tweets, I thought to myself, he is a liar when he says "he was talking about soccer". No he was being critical of men who may become excited about what a man wears on a commercial and that is a clear reference to some guys who would get excited (gays). He supported Tracey Morgan saying if his sons were gay he would murder them. Just remember Roland gave it to GLAAD to use against him. Keep his big mouth shut

Are you glossing over the full extent of the Rev. Mrs. Martin's anti-gay ministry? The fiction that sexual orientation can be wrested out of place is behind a lot of mischief, including the punishment of children and young adults in the name of "curing" them.

Anti-gay "therapy" is abuse, and in 2012 any association with it is becoming radioactive. That's the new normal.
