Faux-Apology Not Accepted: Fire Rush Limbaugh for His Hateful Misogyny

Posted: 03/ 5/2012 4:04 pm

Rush Limbaugh's limp quasi-apology to Sandra Fluke isn't good enough. Clear Channel Communications, the largest radio station owner in the U.S., should fire him and establish a precedent whereby media commentators understand that misogynistic language and attitudes are unacceptable and career-ending -- just like racist and homophobic ones are. An apology from Mr. Limbaugh is insufficient and unacceptable if we are serious about women's rights, equality and ability to participate in civil public discourse. Listening to Limbaugh talk about Sandra Fluke was #Mencallmethings 101.

Why is our nation even having this conversation about this man and his sexist abuse? Replace anything that Rush Limbaugh said with its ugly racist equivalent... Right. Moving right along. The entire planet has spent the last two hundred years coming to terms with the implications of race and class on society. Now some people are having the dawning realization that gender is salient, too. Rush Limbaugh and his ilk are rooted in a dying paradigm. It is so time to bid it farewell and this is as good a start as any.

First, Limbaugh did not "just," as he claims, "illustrate an absurdity with the absurd," and "choose the wrong words." He used vitriolic hate speech in an attempt to belittle and degrade a woman, and by extension most other women, while discussing a serious issue in a public forum. Jack DeGoia, president of Georgetown University, said in his letter of support for Fluke, "This expression of conscience was in the tradition of the deepest values we share as a people. One need not agree with her substantive position to support her right to respectful free expression." The use of the word "slut" to put a woman in her place, the dominant Republican party-theme this primary season, should be as unacceptable as once-but-no-longer-acceptable racist equivalents. Thank god Sandra Fluke is not a woman of color or this could have been even uglier. In addition to the language itself, there was Limbaugh's request that she videotape sex and share it for his consumption. This, I agree, is absurd -- but not in the same way Limbaugh meant it. He actually uses the following phrases in his apology: "What happened to personal responsibility and accountability? Where do we draw the line?" and not in an "attempt to be humorous."

Second, he's not just an "entertainer" he's a "MissRepresenter" and it is causing serious problems for our country. To claim, as Rick Santorum did, that Limbaugh is an entertainer and by extension not important or influential is disingenuous to say the least. But, Limbaugh is not the only media misogynist out there and firing him would be an important precedent. Remember Ed Schultz's "right-wing slut" episode last year? Media commentators on the left and the right regularly ridicule and insult women in mean-spirited, highly gendered ways and laugh it off as lame attempts at humor. Consider what happens to women politicians if they have the audacity to appear on television or radio and take strong, confident positions on anything other than domestic work. A recent study revealed the degree to which sexism undid Hilary Clinton's presidential chances. The sexist ways that women candidates are discussed are endless: Sly jokes about brooms, mops, dusting rags abound; references to nut-crackers, ball-breakers, harried husbands; nags, bitches, 'hos, bimbos, "boobgate" on and on and on. Widespread acceptance of misogynistic language and public sexist bullying is a serious problem to equality and a deterrent to women's running for office. Sexist language is as offensive as racist language, but it is still acceptable in our culture. That is unacceptable. Can you imagine what people would say if media commentators, analysts and reporters had, as Jeff Greenfield has pointed out, talked about President Obama shining their shoes the way the joked about Hillary Clinton doing laundry and vacuuming?

Third, Limbaugh only said out loud what lots of social conservatives think about Sandra Fluke and all women who defend women's rights. (And, if they're sluts, well, that must make any man that shares their beliefs "gay," right?) The only way you can celebrate a Momma Grizzly is if you denigrate a Feminazi Slut. Traditional ideas about men, women and their "complementary roles" rely on madonna/whore stereotypes. Slut-shaming is par for the course in the time-warp, backlash environment that regressive social conservatives want to reinstate. It's how Herman Cain could believe he hadn't done anything "inappropriate" and have an entire army of people defend him against allegations of obvious sexual harassment. Limbaugh's mansplaining is just another flavor of the responses to his assault on Sandra Fluke from the leaders of the Right.

John Boehner: "inappropriate."
Rick Santorum: "... an entertainer can be absurd."
Mitt Romney: "not the language I would have used..."

These men don't fundamentally disagree with Limbaugh and are having a hard time drumming up convincing condemnations of his behavior. "Inappropriate" would be if Limbaugh wore blue jeans to a black tie wedding. "Absurd" would be if he'd claimed that aliens had used nanotechnology to encrypt his brain with slut-shaming memes and he had no control over what he said. And, as Maureen Dowd asked earlier today, what's the right "language" to call a woman a slut? Republicans who understand what the real problem is must be thanking god for George Will today.

Lastly, Limbaugh's apology appears, to say the least, cynical and disingenuous. In the first place, I agree with Pat LaMarche, who made the point that all this press is good for Limbaugh and Clear Channel. But, in terms of the apology -- no one takes it seriously and that's a slap in the face to all women. Did no one ever teach him as a child how to apologize? It is arguable that what saved Ed Schultz's job last year was his apparently genuine unqualified remorse for what he called his "terribly vile" behavior. Not only does Limbaugh seem to feel no remorse, but he continues to defend himself. As pointed out by writer Rachel Larris at the Women's Media Center: "In a statement of 192 words long Limbaugh uses only 55 words to say he was sorry and the other 137 to continue to argue that he's actually right."

In general, I am not in favor of the "take him down" approach to people or problems. And, as a woman feminist writer I am particularly careful about how easy it is for my words to be turned against me by a media culture steeped in 30 years of feminist backlash. But this man and his attitudes are not just harmless entertainment. Even if the senior management of Clear Channel doesn't understand what the big deal is, they must have at least one person in their Marketing Department that can explain what the future looks like and Rush Limbaugh is not it. So, even if it's for selfish profit reasons, do the right thing and fire Rush Limbaugh.

So...what you are saying is that it's wrong to call a woman (or girl) a prostitute?

Even if you believe you are making a valid point or argument in doing so?

Or are you just saying that it's wrong when men do it?

I totally agree with you. I also expect people to recognize that Clear Channel is owned by
Romney's Bain Capital. Romney of course basically endorsed Limbaugh's attack on Sandra Fluke, just said he would have chosen other words.

I guess I just wonder where is the analysis of the left wing Misogynists in this article... I don't like what Rush did at all. It was horribly wrong. But what about Bill Mahar and the rest? Was hoping for a real commentary here.
03:02 PM on 03/06/2012
Perhaps if Limbaugh had been attacking a public figure or politician. such as he has with Pelosi etal, there would not be such an uproar.

This time, he repeatedly went after a citizen for having an opinion different from his.

For your "real commentary" check Fox News.

I agree with you but it isn't right to insult people on a personal level period.

I don't approve of and don't listen to Mahar, either. However, he really is supposed to be a comedian.

With the way other personalities have been fired for sexist remarks such as Don Imus, what gives Rush Limbaugh the golden immunity to spout out sexist, racist and homophobic rhetoric on his radio broadcasts without consequences of any kind other than being denounced by news personalities?

I believe in freedom of speech but Limbaugh being fired for his hateful speech does not violate his freedom of speech rights unless of course he's imprisoned for his speech. However, Limbaugh facing other consequences would be as a result of him having to take responsibility for what he says. I agree the Limbaugh-types are a fading breed, thank God, and I would be more than happy to point them in the direction of the field of obscurity where they can rot as their memory passes to nothing more than an outdated joke.

I do not understand the term" freedom of speech" and the spewing of twisted thoughts that typifies Rush Limbaugh. Why is he allowed to continue with his slander of a person who is using her "freedom of speech" to express her thoughts and beliefs. "Freedom of speech" is a right, but it is also a privilege which he is abusing under the guise of "freedom to denigrate, abuse and demean". Is there no legal way to stop this misuse of a freedom? It is of course tolerated by the Republicans who are simply another refined and sanitized version of his toxic brew.

He defamed Ms. Fluke. That is grounds for firing and is actionable.

I loved this! Well said! Thank you for hitting the nail on the head. All of your points were on target. Especially how each of the male responses seemed to minimize the behavior and statements "inappropriate", "an entertainer can be absurd"...none of them stood up and denounced him or the comments. Shame, shame! Rush needs to go! Period! I now follow you on Twitter! ;-)

Don Imus repeated a racist remark(made by his producer) laughing, even if inappropriately, signifying that it was a joke...he apologized profusely and acted with contrition and was fired.

I did not feel Limbaugh was making a joke and repeated the sentiments the next day, attacking a woman providing a view point for all women. He completely misconstrued her message just to put her in terrible light.

Do we accept his half-assed apology? If so, is it because sexism is less offensive that racism?

He should lose his job then maybe those on the right that are too frightened to oppose him will find their voice.

Thank you, Ms. Chemaly, for saying so much more than merely calling out Rush on his hateful misogyny, but illustrating how this kind of speech is implicitly accepted by many right-wing men when they try to dismiss it as, an off-hand remark, not meant to be taken seriously!

Mitt - "Not the language I would have used..." So, he leaves me wondering exactly how he would have called Ms. Fluke a slut. Care to elaborate, Mr. Romney? How do they say it at the country club?

I have no more tolerance for this crap! Enough!

Clear Channel: Discontinue Rush Limbaugh's radio talk show.

Talk host Roe Conn out of Chicago explained how Rush's show is produced. Rush owns his production company, and has a contract with premier radio networks( a subsidiary of clear channel). Rush also has considerable stock in both companies. In short he is his boss and cannot be fired.

If you want to get rid if him the key people to convince are his listeners. Convince them to stop listening and he will be gone. Insult his listeners for having listened and they will defend him.

The more you tighten the fist, the more slips through your fingers.

I agree with you , but I think that it needs to come from both directions - corporate responsibility and audience rejection - in order to change the culture of acceptance for this type of language and treatment of women.

Exactly. The problem is that too many have attacked his listeners as a group and personally as a result of this.

I personally listen to him, I have since I was 8. Yet I am not a conservative and don't agree with what he says. The thing to understand about his listeners is that most are just political junkies who may lean right to varying degree's. Try to find common ground.

If this is a duplicate I apologies as I pressed a wrong button earlier.

PS I just noticed a petition on whitehouse.gov to get Rush off Armed forces radio. Why not some other petition site? Things like that make this feel less and less about his foul language and more about getting rid of a presidential critic.

As a self-proclaimed Conservative that doesn't agree with Ms. Fluke's position, I am nevertheless appalled at the Limbaugh comments. He should be fired. That kind of disrespect is totally uncalled for in any arena, public or private.

It was Rush Limbaugh who coined the phrase "feninazi," it was he who ridiculed a very young Chelsea Clinton and he who has made many demeaning comments about so many women that I don't even need to recount. This guy has a pattern of spewing mysogonistic comments. He has had a nice long run, but now it is time to go. Let's spend our time listening to talking heads who add some meaningful dialect instead of nasty hate mongers.

What about his continuous abusive comments toward Michelle Obama? He has constantly criticized her healthy looks, stating that she "doesn't look like [she] follows her own...dietary advice" and would never be put on the cover of Sports Illustrated's swimsuit issue. He has referred to her as "Michelle, my butt." He even called a little girl, Chelsea Clinton, the "White House dog."

I know, right? As if being on the cover of a magazine in a bikini is the only measure of a woman's value. That is exactly one of the many comments I was referring to.
