Obama Can Win by Being Bipartisan and Bold

Posted: 08/15/11 02:11 PM ET

The New York Times says President Obama's re-election team is debating the best way to win the all important independent vote. I hope they'll bear in mind that "independent" doesn't mean "generic" and "bipartisan" doesn't mean "bland."

I believe the president has been right to pursue bipartisan solutions, and that no one should be surprised that he has. This is the man who vaulted to national prominence with his call for, not a red America or a blue America, but a United States of America.

But that doesn't mean he was elected by people who need everything served not-too-hot, not-too-cold, but just-right. Just as the "average person" does not exist -- being only a composite of millions of quirky individuals -- neither does the idealized, centrist independent voter. Independents are independent for all sorts of reasons, including, we should not forget, that many just don't think much about their politics.

There is no "independent policy" that will win the independent vote. When it comes to governing, the president can continue to focus on making choices he believes will yield the most progress for the country. But talking too much about how carefully moderate it all is could, ironically, lose the independent vote.

That's because independents, like all voters, don't vote for policies. They vote for a leader. And leaders don't talk in terms of policies, they tell stories about destiny.

The choice of a leader is an emotional one, based on character and stories. There's a lot of research on this, but if you doubt it, look at what Republicans have done to the nation's economy, and consider how many people believe that it's President Obama's fault.

Obama's breakthrough "United States of America" speech wasn't a policy briefing, it was a powerful story of patriotic unity, delivered by someone who projected great strength of character. Obama continued that way in his presidential campaign, which was a call to the quest for "a more perfect union."

Meanwhile Republicans were descending into a hyper-partisan disregard for that union. They have done it great damage. But they have at least handed the Obama re-election campaign a great gift: the gift of a righteous battle.

President Obama can fight this battle with passion, and he can do it by being true to his principles. He won't need to get anywhere near the vicious partisanship he clearly detests -- in fact, just the opposite.

Obama is in the enviable position of fighting as the champion of his nation's highest values, the values that both unite us and protect our freedom. He can win by being bipartisan and bold. The path Obama followed to the presidency is also the path to his re-election.

"The path Obama followed to the presidency is also the path to his re-election." Really!

The one BIG difference is that now we have had years of the Obama experience and we understand that he is too concerned with being a centrist and he does not know how to negotiate on behalf of the American people.

Obama's biggest asset is the G-NO-P's inability to find a moderate candidate to win the support of independents!

The author suggests that Obama can win by acting BOLD. Well, we are waiting!

President Obama on his bus tour needs to be relentless with pushing good ideas for jobs creation. I know that there is the "infrastructure bank" idea that is still alive on the hill and Senator Kerry has been keeping it going and President Obama is using that as one of his platforms which is great but he needs to forget about the free trade agreements because if you look at NAFTA and other free trade agreements they cost us jobs and gave corporations all the benefits at our expense. Free trade does not mean FAIR trade. I think that President Obama should go out on a limb and call for more to be done on the mortgage foreclosure crisis and debt forgiveness, that alone would put more money back into the economy. Those people would be able to buy again instead of putting all their money in a never-ending money pit designed by the financial industry just for us. I know the banks will suffer but I don't care. We have bailed them out, they are nothing but a corrupt bunch of thieves who have been using underhanded means to increase their profits at our expense. No more. I say.

His call for a "United States of America" eh........this president slams the right every single chance he gets-did it again last night in his "presidential business" bus tour-oh btw this wasn't a campaign trip at all-strictly taxpayer funded BUSINESS......

This man has polarized the US to a point I've never seen........to call for the unification of a country and then out of the other side of your mouth slamming those who don't agree with you....most folks don't believe it anymore Mr. Prez...................................
11:41 AM on 08/16/2011
He isn't slamming those who disagree with him. He is slamming those who won't work with him. Who keep moving the goalposts farther away. Who won't even agree to positions that were originally their own. You can't unify a government when one side says "it's my way or the highway'. It isn't Obama who has polarized the country but those who can't except that he is president. Those calling him socialist, fascist, or nazi. Sometimes all at the same time which is impossible. Obama has bent over backward to strike a deal with the other party and been rebucked each time. He has put forward policy revisions that has the left screaming at him yet he persists in trying. No it is not Obama who has polarized the country.

in order to appear tough he is going to have to do something other than be a hall monitor that is scared of the bully running in the hall way.
06:15 AM on 08/16/2011
Maybe, but he jumped the shark when he caved into the Republicans with the debt ceiling "deal." Now he calls the Republican running for president his "friends?" The man has got to get in touch with reality, and his blaming congress shtick won't cut it.

They are his friends, hes one of them. Dont listen to the rhetoric, instead look at his policies and how he consistently sets himself up with these defeatist deals. After two years of this he's blatantly calling them his friends, does the man have to draw a picture?

That's funny. Republican pundits and voters are blaming Boehner for caving to Obama.
10:57 AM on 08/16/2011
Not true. Boehner has bragged that he got 98% of what he wanted. He didn't raise taxes on the wealthy or close corporate loopholes for the rich either. it wasn't a fair compromise by any stretch.

It is obviously too early call the direction of public opinion for/against President Obama. But I believe [hope] that he will be able to make a good case for his re-election. So far, he is touting the mantra that conservatives are obstructing his progression, all-the-while attempting to be bi-partisan. After seeing the very minimal gains made in the Wisconsin re-election; I believe it is important for Obama and Dems to support Unions, Infrastructure development, Education, and Health Care Reforms, as well as major reforms to immigration.

Remember, for the first 9 months in 2009; the media and conservatives complained that Obama did too little. Now, they say he has done to much. Hopefully, Obama will be able to make this work in his favor.

i really am not sure obama wants to win. but either way i will not vote for him, he has wasted the past 2 years, i was worried about his lack of experience last time around and he proved that to be a problem. in giving him a fair chance to impress me, obama failed, and as you supporters of his get angry at me, i suggest you realize this is the US of A and like it or not EVERYONE in this country is entitled to their own opinion.

If Obama faced an even marginally competent opposition, he'd be crushed. As is, he can take the incredibly unambitious advice given and eke out his empty win - by why should anyone else settle for a completely unacceptable outcome as the best that can be done?

Since when does tenth rate performance suffice?
01:43 AM on 08/16/2011
Obama is neither bipartisan, nor bold. If it means he cannot win - thank God!

Tried and tried and ................he is not going to do it. It is not in Obama. Repubs loath him and he keeps asking for bipartisan agreement. Perhaps if they caught him without his FBI guards they would convince him of their true feelings............and the "shiner" would hardly show?

Obama is Professor material not Presidential. Comng up on three years of trying to see a little light through His methods. Perhaps this campaign will show him he has left the Left stranded too often?

Obama does not have the competitive aggression to win political fights. These are fights about opposing realities. Oil and water only mixes when forced even then it is for a short time. How long ago did the US begin Social Security and the Repubs will accept it. It is not in their DNA, SERIOUSLY ! !

It's this type of closed mind expressed by Mr Rayburn that has contributed so much to wretched state of self-government. Why doesn't he even bother to check out the website? Is it fear? Is it laziness? Is it his pride? Even if I don't agree with Obama 100% of the time, any idiot knows he's proposed and signed legislation and issued executive orders (remember bin Laden?). How beneficial the accomplishments are is a matter of debate. And .. even the congenitally misinformed O'Reilly gets his facts right some times.

I hate the constant squabble of our current leaders, cable news, TP'ers, Repubs, Dems and HuffPo readers. The reason is simple - - STUPIDITY Unless alternate universes really do exist, I can not find any logic in:

Many of the positions of the Repub candidates. Tax breaks do not create jobs - DEMAND creates jobs.
How can anyone not understand that the constant circulation of money is what raises everyone's standard of living. Designing a jobs program that repairs our country's infrastructure will put people to work, AND, put money in the hands of those who will spend it.

Investing (or not) in our educational system will directly affect the future of our country.

It is ridiculous to attempt to swing responsibility for the recent debt debate on the Pres. when obstructions were constantly placed in the debate.

This reminds me of how everyone in Congress walked lock-step behind Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld into the cause of this fiasco we find ourselves in. I fault Dems for not having more fight against them.

You may not like Obama, but the alternative is just downright scary for the majority of the country. (Those making less than $250,000). Everyone better realize that being black or white makes no difference -- How GREEN $$$ you are is what will make the difference.

Almost makes you think Repubs are a different species? Like gays only primitive, seriously agressive (love wars) and in need of strong leadership that thinks (subjectively) like them i.e. "survival of the fittest"?

Who thinks EVOLUTION ever STOPPED? At the extremes, like now, this R-Species is obvious but they are also blended into mixes of US at the middle? Then there are D-Species following ethics of, "all for one and one for all". We blend into the middle too i.e. like sleeping with the enemy? LOL ...............check species PassPort first?

Standing here on the left looking at R-Species praising their religious/political or political/religious chameleons could make a Fear Monger rich, LOL p.s. faved & fav'd

Obama gains nothing by being bipartisan in his approach, because the Republican party has absolutely no interest in budging an inch. In fact, they've stated that their main goal is to destroy Obama's presidency, and demonstrated in the debt ceiling debate their willingness to destroy our economy to gain their ends.

What Obama needs to do is to take the gloves off, and let the American know just how un-American Republicans have proven themselves to be, and how their policies hurt middle Americans and enrich the already wealthy.

Obama's problem is that no one has reason to believe a word that comes out of his mouth. His cred is just plain shot.
10:49 PM on 08/15/2011
Yeah, reallly? Give me an example. Just one. DADT had bipartisan support. That is in the past. Name one issue.
10:53 PM on 08/15/2011
I meant the repeal of DADT had bipartisan support. On what issue that is important to this country is there bipartisan agreement when the new Republican candidates won't even agree to a 10 to 1 cut to revenue ratio? "Bipartisan and bold" is a meaningless. Absolutely meaningless.
