The current swine flu epidemic, with all of its gravitas, actually almost makes light of another "epidemic" that has afflicted millions in the U.S. for years and which shows no sign of subsiding: childhood obesity.
A misplaced priority on profits over human health in the context of a globalized world led to this epidemic and the looming possibility that it will now become the world's latest pandemic.
In the weeks ahead, there will be plenty of hysteria (and misinformation) about the swine flu. If you can, try to focus on what you can control: Your hygiene, your contact with others, and your health.

I don't mind joking about it. To laugh in trying times allows you to survive. I am Mexican for God´s sake! We joke about everything here even if we are the butt of the joke. Perhaps even more so. I have a business that receives primarily visitors from the US and Canada. Of course, this outbreak has caused damage to my business even though we have had no outbreaks in this part of Mexico. I am even willing to try and laugh about it. This just lacks wit.
How about, "Come to Mexico...We Won't Enlist You for an Illegal War Against Iraq" Or, "I Went to Mexico and They Made Me Leave My Assault Weapons at the Border." Or, "Viva Mexico...173 Years Since we Suckered the U.S. Into Taking Texas Off Our Hands!" I got a million of 'em.

I don't object to the bad taste, but these just aren't that funny. Sorry.

Like some of theother posts today I feel we need to lighten up.
