Igniting The Modern Mystic

I've always adored the great mystics - Hafiz, Rumi, St. Teresa of Avila, St. John of the Cross. Their writings transcend our mundane human perception and give glimpses into the rapturous experience of a higher reality. Truth be told, I fancy myself a modern day mystic, someone weaving together these worlds of the mundane and the magical.

When asked at dinner parties or social events what kind of work I do, I find it an awkward question. The simple answer is that I'm an entrepreneur, investor, teacher, speaker and writer. But, there's far more to it than that. As Khalil Gibran once wrote, "work is love made visible." I find building social ventures and connecting with people in a teaching environment as ecstatic as love-making. The ultimate reason to create, teach, speak or write is to dissolve the veil of separation and reveal the intimate union of all existence...to awaken a recognition of ourselves as One with all that is.

So when Arianna Huffington asked me to write a column on conscious living and spirituality I was simultaneously thrilled and tentative. Thrilled because these topics provoke great joy for me. Tentative because authenticity demands a level of revealed public dialogue that I've previously saved for engaged audiences or private circles. It demands an even deeper level of "love made visible."

Lest this sound trite, let me add that the mystic's love is not blind to the complication and suffering in the world. It is all-embracing, using the full human experience as fuel for the raging fire of awakening. Our modern lives are difficult. We face social injustices, environmental crises, war, economic imbalances, poverty, hunger, a vast array of suffering across our planet.

By comparison, it would seem rather easy to check into a monastery or convent and pursue a peaceful life of contemplative practice. In my quiet moments I've considered this path, but know it will never be. The hour is late and the crises of our world too great. We have a profound responsibility to awaken from our slumber and re-ignite our creative energies in service to a more sustainable (and ecstatic) human existence. We can do this through the substance of our everyday lives - in our work, in our relationships, in our politics, in our homes -- if we are awake.

This column is about the necessary commitment to conscious awakening and the resulting possibility of collectively re-imagining and repairing our world. It is a sacred journey born in the mystical fire of our modern lives - families, children, careers, health, relationships, finances - where our uncensored experiences are the fuel for the transformation.

We will explore how, through that transformation, we can walk in the world with a greater sense of wonder, delight, humility and compassionate action. How we can at once surrender to the greatness of the flow of life and find our power there, navigating the grand paradoxes - those that would have us believe we need to struggle, fight, and effort our way forward, when in fact our most powerful purpose emerges when we lay down that effort. How we can reside in the moment, being fully present with the creative currents that arise right now, and follow them without a plan for where they might take us.

This is the delight of the soul's unfolding and fertile ground for a new collective wisdom. If we let it, the divine voice will seduce us from our self-imposed limitation, from the narrow sense of our possession of life, into the vastness of all Being.

Over the coming weeks I hope to beckon, encourage, and inspire this soul's journey - a journey together of making love visible.

You know, I have characterized myself for a long time as a "middle-class mystic." By this I mean I am someone who appreciates the mysteries of life, the gift of self-awareness, the oneness of all, and that we cannot escape making a difference in the world. The only question is what kind of difference, and given that understanding, I cannot choose other than to make the world better for all, for that is how I make it better for myself at the same time.

Kindness and compassion are not just virtuous attitudes and behaviors, they are the most rational approach to life given that we are all in this together. Ultimately the truth, as far as I am concerned, is that we are all mystics. It's just that not everyone knows it.

Truly the only ultimate solutions to the world's' ills is a new spirituality, a new way of percieving the world--all of us as one, with enough for all of us, our differences making the world only more adventurous because of our innate similarities and the divine right of everyone to exist.
I am excited that this is part of the Huffington Post, as I was worried that all of the opinionators and editorialists were stuck in a newtonian mugglescape of existentialism. We, ALL, have the power. We are not futile. Dialogue itself is power--how many of us are thinking the same things?

Good for huffpo to encourage dialog on such a wide ranging subject like mysticism.

I look forward to reading more from Stacey Lawson in the coming weeks.

With enlightenment, an awareness of the suffering in our world is part of the bargain.
The great challenge is to resist letting this awareness drag you down to a point where you become a negative force on those around you.

Right now with our political situation this is a huge challenge for anyone who is paying attention.

I like the pragmatic simplicity from gardengodess on page 1.

Whatever else you may do....be a positive loving person, radiate that positive energy and all who come in contact with you will be touched in some way....and it will spread.

Peace.

It is refreshing to have a blog on Huffington Post that speaks of the higher consciousness movement. It's refreshing to have HuffPo period. I look forward to reading future blogs and I encourage people to have a look at The SHIFT - www.lighthousefilmz.com as it speaks to the convergence of business, governments, education, health and wellness, the arts, spirituality, and how it has rapidly advanced through technology - globally - as we only have this one earth. To paraphrase Desmond Tutu, "one day we may realize we are family." Peace.

SO - when are we going to talk about that "mystic" thing?

I'm from California.
I'm from probably the most mystic-populated area on the earth, much less the United States.
Read it, done it.....yadayada.

Now, what's the real discussion about the PROCESS rather than the PERSONS?

What benchmarks to use in a definition? (If you don't define what you want to know or think you know, you can't communicate that knowledge any further without a consensus on that)

Are you talking "faith-based" or "intellectually-based" or 'philosophically-based"
IE:

Faith-based (I've been told this is the truth, therefore it is)

Intellectually-based (I've read it, therefore it is)

Philosophically-based (I've studied and consulted and this is my theory, therefore prove me wrong or I will be correct in stating it is)

There will be no test, but navel-consultation is allowed.

I'm so happy to see not only this, but the responses. There are times one feels the world just doesn't get it, but I realize now that the message is spreading. We are all one with each other and with our Creator; all there is is God, and all God is all Good. If you look at this earth's history, peace has always prevailed. The poetry of Gibran and Rumi, the writings of Neale Donald Walsh, Deepak Chopra, Wayne Dyer and others, have inspired me. Thanks to you and Arianna, I can now keep in touch, and remain here as I find a way to center myself in the reality of Peace and love. Namaste!

I share the concern that the scope of this column might be narrow. Here's hoping we get beyond the Abrahamic.

Stacey,

I read your article and perused the comments. It seems the opinions have spun themselves into the ongoing debate over mysticism being at odds with science. I know, among other things, you have a strong scientific and technical background. Had this article been written by someone else, I might have jumped on the science bandwagon. I'd expect your words on mysticism are not intended to be at odds with science. One day the truths of both science and mysticism will surely converge.

I noticed the name of one who replied earlier as "Desiderata". In Max Ehrmann's famous poem of the same name, he describes a declaration of what is essential to one's life and how to live peacefully. I felt your article widens Desiderata's sphere of influence to include society itself.

"One thing we know
Our God is the same.
The earth is precious to Him..
This we know.
The Earth does not belong to man:
Man belongs to the Earth.
This we know.
All things are connected
Like the blood which unites one family.
All things are connected.
Whatever befalls the Earth
Befalls the sons af the Eaarth.
Man did not weave the web of life.
He is merely a straand in it.
Whatever he does to the web,
He does to himself

Stacey and Arianna, What a wonderful surprise to read this blog on a political web site. To evolve to compassion and understanding (love) is the path of our soul. We are all connected and that is one thing our politicians need to understand. The other thing they need to understand is the great Universe never forgets and the negative energy of their corruption and lack of integrity will return to them.
When I am bogged down with the sadness of the collective consciousness, I spend time with a flower or a tree, or in silence and the connection with the loving Universe is re-established.
Also, Meister Eckert is on of my favorite mystics.

Hot damn! Now we're _talking_.

I hear you, googookachoo. But Science, my dear friend, doesn't know _everything_. There are 4 functions of mythology. Most people attack the 3rd and toss the others out.

To awaken a sense of awe in knowing that I and the the Universe are selfsame.

To present an order of the cosmos.

To further the cohesion of a particular group in its relation with a particular place.

To guide humans through the trials of life with dignity and grace.

(Any other students of Joseph Campbell in the house?) When the religious function is enslaved to the goals of one group, as the Nazis did and our politicos do as well, myth gets tossed out with the bath water.

Examine your own boundary. Every cell has a membrane. Every one of them is semi-permeable. The Flow must go on! else we would starve or die by poisoning. So where do you draw the line? Where does "that" become "you?" Show me your Green Card!

My answer: Zen in its relation to Science. I learned this trick tutoring remedial kids on-line.

Draw a one-sided line. Please note that as a line is being drawn, 'sides' appear. The line, 'Side A' and 'Side B' mutually arise in the act of dividing what begins and remains an indivisible field. We are Indivisible. This is why political power inheres in WE, the People.

Science tries to see each side exactly as it is. Science, and deceptive politicians, presume always to stand on the line. But _We, the People_, are that part of the seeing that doesn't see itself. Science assumes the middle is always excluded. In politics, you"re a patriot or a traitor. There goes our common ground!

You only THINK you are apart from that which gives rise to you. So you go searching apart from yourself for your very self.

Hakuin wrote, "It is like ice and water: apart from water, there is no ice; apart from your self, where do you seek the enlightened one?" (Pronoun "you" chosen for effect.)

You is what you am and cow don't make ham. Frank Zappa

It is the mind that creates all the suffering in the world and fills the body with all its misery.
Not to be able to controll the mind is like a ship without sails or ankor at the mercy of the waves of the sea.

Take a moment now and observe your own mind, it dissapears, because it is less real than you are. That which is observing your mind is what you are. Be that.
