To squeeze out more space, try a:

1. Collapsible shelf. Mount collapsible metal brackets to the wall for an only-when-needed surface to fold clean clothes.

2. Slim cart. Store laundry supplies on a multitiered narrow rolling cart and stash it between the washer and dryer.

3. Wall-mounted or retractable drying line. Twelve inches from the wall is all the space needed to mount a rack to hang drying clothes. Alternately, hang a tension rod in a doorframe.

4. Fold-out ironing board. These mount to the wall or back of a door with screws. Look for the collapsible kind that folds down in a series of stages and folds back up into a compact unit.

Quick Tip: Odds and Ends

Keep a jackpot jar on a shelf near the washing machine for loose change and other items found in pockets.
