If you thought driving a car was dangerous you are in for a big surprise. According to recent reports the United Sates has recently seen spike in Pedestrian accidents. While it appears that more motorists are hitting the road because of the drop in gas prices it has not stopped the number of pedestrian accidents from increasing.

Many law officials cite that distracted drivers and pedestrians who choose to text while walking have all contributed to this increase in accidents. According to the report 2,368 pedestrians were killed in the first six months of 2015, compared to 2,232 the first 6 months of 2014.

It appears that pedestrian safety is a big problem in the United States but according to Legal Examiner there are ways you can remain safe:

  • Cross the street only at intersections
  • Avoid paths that have no side walks
  • Wear bright clothing
  • Stay focused
  • Do not read and or text while walking

Although, the numbers have increased nationwide, residents in Rhode Island are celebrating. Their number of pedestrian accidents have declined thanks to local officials, attorneys and safety programs that encourage accident safety . "Even if you feel fine after being involved in an accident, it is always wise to be checked out by medical professionals," says Mark Gemma a local Rhode Island resident. We all can only hope this message of safety begins to resonate in places across the country.
