Tom Jensen, a communications staffer at Public Policy Polling (PPP), which has done a great deal of presidential election polling this year, maintains an email list through which he sends out regular updates. Yesterday he sent an email to the list saying he believed PPP was being targeted by a group looking to advance Hillary Clinton's suspended candidacy and asking if any of the members of the list could provide relevant information. "Hillary Spammers," as he called them, asked PPP to include Clinton's name in any surveys comparing support for Obama and McCain in the weeks before the Democratic Convention.
The fact that this email campaign to pollsters, if that's what it is, comes in the days following a closed-door Convention strategy meeting held by members of the Pro-Clinton group PUMA, or "Party Unity My Ass," suggests one approach Clinton supporters are adopting. PUMA and other Clinton supporters have long argued Clinton matches up better against McCain than does Obama. Poll numbers that support that impression would bolster such arguments in Denver.
Jensen's call out to his email list is below and appeared under the subject heading: "Hillary Spammers."
PPP has received two e-mails today, both blind carbon copied, asking us to start polling Hillary Clinton against John McCain to show that she is the stronger candidate than Barack Obama. They say this will show she should be nominated at the convention.
Does anyone know who's behind this? They're pasted below:---------------------------------

Subject:Dear Pollster,
Since Barack Obama has been performing weakly in the polls against John McCain, and also considering the fact that almost two-thirds of Americans want a Democrat for president, I ask you to please place Hillary Clinton's name in your presidential polls from now until at
least the convention. As neither of the two Democratic candidates have the minimum delegate numbers, there is currently still no certified nominee. It is not too late for the party to re-evaluate (or validate)
their choice with a viable comparison. Perhaps it is time for the pulse of the American people to be taken again?Hillary was way ahead of McCain when the polls were done soon after she suspended her campaign.
It would also be of great interest to know how Hillary still polls versus the other Democratic candidate and John McCain in important big states like Florida, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Michigan.
Thank you for your consideration in this matter. I remain,
Sincerely yours,
Teresa Lim

Subject: Polling on Sen. Clinton...I've read all your latest polls on Barack Obama vs. John McCain, Would you consider doing some polling as to what would happen if Sen. Clinton were the nominee against McCain? After all, there is no democratic nominee yet, only a presumptive nominee.
Thanks! it would be very interesting.

At the risk of sounding rather harsh, I think that PUMA is not only wrong but delusional. Had Hillary been the nominee today, the GOP would be morhping Elizabeth Edwards and Hillary into one narrative, as enablers who support warped men. The public would not know where the two scandals start and finish. The Monica saga would be so fresh in their minds, we'd live 98 all over again.
Does PUMA think that the GOP would give Hillary a pass? They'd get out their base in no uncertain way.
AND unless she can win on 18 million votes only, what about Obama's base who would think that he was robbed, you know? the educated, the African Americans, the young people and all the fair minded Independent voters?
As a Hillary supporter during her senate campaign, I cannot begin to describe how much I am now ashamed of her actions. Her behavior now cements why she should never ever be president. I think that she is incapable of being a strategic leader, just a barn-burner type.
What are they thinking? I'd love to see their profiles bacause these people can't be sensible. They are either crazy or want to burn down the village in order to save it.
I think you have to separate the people who sent these from Mrs. Clinton herself. Your asking too much of any of the candidates to not only have to defend and instruct their spokespeople, but also their spread out supporters.
I'm an Obama supporter and I think there really has been more smoke then fire with this whole issue. Sure I would have preferred that Mrs. Clinton do things differently, but I don't blame her for what every so-called supporter says and thinks.
No you really don't have to separate them. Mrs. Clinton has done nothing to discourage them and in subtle ways has done everything she can to egg them on. WJ is even worse. You're talking about cause and effcect here. That's not something you can separate.
I'm finally realizing why the PUMAs are doing this; they had a good teacher..Hillary. Hillary obviously hasn't accepted the fact that she lost so they're thinking why should they. To say this is a disappointment would be an understatement..just sad.
She just can not get over the fact that she LOST.
hrc, you lost, it is over, get the h**l on with your life and GET OUT OF OUR.
It is time for all of us who believe that the Clintons are detrimental to the Democratic Party to shut them and their supporters out. Do not read about them, do not watch them on television, do not listen to them on the radio, do not comment on blogs about them. They and their supporters feed on frenzy, be it negative or positive. Why help them? Can you imagine the blogs if there were no Clinton detractors on them? Whatever will their supporters do? If you must vent, let the party and its officials know that you will no longer pay any attention to the Clintons or the venues which feature them. It is time we took back the Democratic Party from the Clintons and the DLC. It is time we used all of our energy positively to get Obama and local worthy Democratic candidates elected.
A visit to the Public Policy Polling site shows no further attention to this query. I agree with statements that link interest in the future of the Clintons to the MSM's proclivities.
WHO TO ASK ABOUT THOSE EMAILS
Try Tommy Christopher over at the AOL Political Machine. He's done a lot of research on PUMA and has interviewed a few of their people:
http://news.aol.com/political-machine/bloggers/tommy-christopher/
http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/08/09/puma-gets-scary/
There's also Christina Baker, an avid PUMA researcher who lurks and posts on the PUMA websites. She might recognize those email addys and she's usually quick to respond:

Hillary will do everything she can to make this convention about YOU, Hillary's loyal supporters,.
You want a candidate like Hillary. You deserve a candidate like Hillary.
Hillary supports YOU in your efforts to nominate her as YOUR President.
Personally, I think she did run her campaign. I think she was in charge of everything, having her surrogate's mouthpiece for her and it backfired. Although, everyone's blaming her team....they just happen to have the same arrogant, elitist opinion of Hillary that she herself has. I do not blame her team. Her husband and her have always used their friend's and surrogate's to take the fall. Enough already.
Even with all the help Rove, McCain and Limbaugh produced for Hillary, she still lost. Probably a third of her 18 mil were crossovers, globally she has little credibility and her husband is despised. The pair of them need to understand, the World and Americans are not so gullable this time around, are they?
Hillary Clinton must put her foot down and tell these angry, middle-aged white women to stop, because that's pretty much the profile of the vast majority of the vocal "hundreds" of PUMA folks looking to be obstructionists.
If she wants to have any future in the Democratic Party, she must come forward and make a public denunciation...NOW!!!
If not, it will also be a thought in the back of everyone's head that she authroized it.
I am far from the only white middle-aged woman in Virginia (and elsewhere) who has been for Senator Obama from the beginning and I would really appreciate it if you would stop this hate speech against people like me. What do I need to do to satisfy you? I can't become male, nonwhite, or young. Like all of us, I am who I am.
I have supported Obama with my time and money since February (primary time here in Virginia) and am fed up with attempts to focus the convention on anyone other than the nominee. I have yet to hear that Romney's supporters are acting this way over on the Republican side.
I would appreciate it if you and others would stop calling me names. I am proud to be middle-aged and have earned my experience as a poltical volunteer and Democrat. I am proud to be an Obama supporter. In fact, just showing up at Obama events as a white middle-aged woman sometimes may even add a little extra oomph since there is such a distorted idea (that you are helping to fuel) that "people like me" don't support him. Please stop sticking labels on me and let's make the tent big enough to include all voters and supporters, even the dreaded middle-aged ones.
This is just beyond pathetic! The Clintons will have their "catharsis" on Tuesday and Wednesday. These people, and PUMA/Faux Democrats included, are determined to undermine the Democrtic Convention.
It's not about the Clintons anymore. Obama is the nominee and the Clintons and the whackp PUMAs need to deal with it!!
Hillary Clinton must put an end to this fiasco if she hopes to have any future with the Democratic Party. If there is a perception that she and her entourage of supporters stood in the way of getting Obama elected, it's so over for her. I basically like Hillary and supported her early on, but now Obama is our candidate and this election is too important to our country's future for members of our own party to sabotage it. Ladies, get some help for your emotions, and think of the country - not just yourself.
Sometime within the next week Hillary Clinton will be required to make it clear to all, finally and without any doubt whatsoever, whether she has been covertly encouraging the PUMAs and their ilk. She will have to decide if she will sign a request to have her name put on the ballot.
Is it is worth tarnishing Bill's 'legacy' and mortgaging her political future? Or, does she want to go down in history as a loyal and honest Democrat who told the truth when she said she would do everything in her power to help put Barack Obama in the White House?
The decision will be hers - and we will all be watching as she shows the world what she will stand for.
Well, the republicans have finally figued out how to destroy the Clinton's political ambitions forever. Obama supporters need not worry or do anything that engages this mess. This is a Clinton problem that will not go away and it will effectively end her career. She has been warned by the democratic party and she will pay the price whether this PUMA madness is fueled by 250 republicans or 250 other people supporting her. The fantasy that Obama is not doing well against John McCain is just that. Hillary's delegates can and will release themselves from this non-sense if it becomes necessary for them to force a separation. Remember how Charlie Rangel and the New York delegates had to draw a line in the sand for Hillary? The convention will start to look like a public shunning - HRC will not recover.
WELL SAID !
Great post!!!!
This crowd of has bins', need a good therapist.....please Dr. Strangelove.....talk to these women!
Here's an idea: put EVERYONE who ran for president back on the ballot, completely reverse the primary/caucus process of giving average people the vote, and put it all in the hands of the convention attendees. Obama's numbers would be cut into just enough by everyone who wasn't HRC, so that (of course) it would be his own fault that he lost.
This would garuantee democracy would be served, by cutting out the voice of several million meddlesome potential voters and allowing HRC to win the nomination solely to make a few hundred PUMAs happy.
In fact, why bother with an election. The establishment might as well just install Hillary now and declare her Grand Exhalted Leader for Life some time after early 2009.
I could not agree with this post more. The only people interested in this VERY tired story are the media!!
Where were the PUMAs on June 3rd 2008? .................... OBAMA BECAME THE DEMOCRATIC NOMINEE ON JUNE 3RD.................... NOT HILLARY.
250 PUMAs (out of 18 million) met in conclave and this is the best they can come up with?........
I thought that the PUMAs LOVED Hillary, but all they are doing is putting her out front and center to be MOCKED and RIDICULED.
You seem to have forgotten the purpose of a Democratic Convention. Otherwise, why bother having one?
