How the Parties Handle Setbacks

What's Your Reaction:

Political parties are going to experience highs and lows, victories and setbacks. And while the ebbs and flows of shifting electoral fortunes are hard to avoid, how a party responds to adversity says something about their commitments and fortitude.

With that in mind, consider a few examples from recent history.

* In 1998, voters were unimpressed, to put it mildly, with the Republican crusade against Bill Clinton. In the midterms, voters sent a message -- in a historical rarity, the party that controlled the White House gained congressional seats in the sixth year of a presidency. It was a stinging rebuke of the GOP and its excesses.

House Republicans responded by impeaching the president anyway. In fact, they did so quickly, ramming impeachment through the chamber before newly-elected lawmakers could take office.

* In 2006, voters were widely dissatisfied with the war in Iraq, and wanted to see a withdrawal. In the midterms, the Republican majority didn't just suffer setbacks; they lost both the House and Senate. It was an overwhelming rejection of GOP rule.

In response, Republicans endorsed escalating the conflict anyway, and approved funding for the "surge."

* In 2008, Democrats took the White House and expanded their congressional majorities to heights unseen in a generation. After years of witnessing abject failure, the electorate wanted nothing to do with the GOP.

Republicans responded by changing literally nothing about their agenda, ideas, ideology, rhetoric, tone, attitude, or approach to politics.

* In 2009, there were five congressional special elections. Democrats won all five -- including one district that hadn't been represented by a Democrat since the 1800s. Despite frustrations about the pace of change in D.C., voters still weren't buying what the GOP was selling.

Republicans again responded by changing literally nothing about their agenda, ideas, ideology, rhetoric, tone, attitude, or approach to politics.

* In 2010, Democrats lost a special election in Massachusetts. In response, Dems are having a meltdown and seem to have gone into scream/cry/panic mode. Many leading figures in the congressional delegation are prepared to give up on their policy agenda altogether.

The difference in the way the two parties handle setbacks is hard to miss. Nothing conveys weakness like running for the hills at the first sign of trouble.

The real question is not how the "parties" handle setbacks. It's all about the Uber-Media Circus that follows around every single nano-fake-issue in order to sell advertising and thus stay in business.

Let's be honest: 99% of the "setbacks, failures, false-starts, screw-ups or whatever" are trivial in the big scheme of things. Notice, barely 3 weeks have passed and hardly a word is being written or spoken about the Christmas day TERROR ATTACK. Sure was a big deal until the Media had some other bleed/lead story (Haiti was a whopper!). The fact is, the attempted bombing was turned into a massive smear campaign by the very nature of Media coverage today.

How interesting it is that Obama's setbacks are SO important but whilst the last incompetent spent 8 years screwing things up, the press was off doing who-knows-what. Where was all the concern about "setbacks" back then?

When the republicans lose they run to the right and get praised for it but when the democrats lose they must run like cowards to the center. The democrats always get the wrong message

The republicans tell you what to think while the democrats are afraid of what you might you think

Well said. The Dems need to get on offense, understand the GOP leadership considers them weak and worthless. I believe that in the right forum Obama and/or his minions could make 60% of the tea party group question their allegiance. The clarity of thought and reasonable arguments that could be made just need to be pushed forward with far more vigor.

Interesting read...goes to show the different mind sets . For repubs..if something fails to work..it means thy are not doing enough of it (tax cuts,warmongering/spending,fear based rhetoric ). For the Dems, if something fails..they fold and assume the sky is about to fall on the heads.

Yeah, because the idea of another failed stimulus hasn't been pushed by the president and his cohorts *rolls eyes*

I like absolutely nothing about the Republicans but these spineless Dems are unfit to lead a Boy Scout troop much less a nation.

Yes, Republicans do not do change in tone because they do not do introspection. They never take a look at themselves so how could they come to think they should change the message? When they lose they always arrive at the conclusion they were not conservative enough. They do not blame Bush and Cheney for lying us into war and for torture, they blame them for spending too much. Imagine if every time Democrats lost an election they decided they were not liberal enough. In that case, Democrats would now instrument reconciliation to get universal health care. Instead they will sneak back into their offices and speak of the need for more bipartisanship cementing the perception in the public eye that they are losers. However, Republican inflexibility will be their undoing in the end. One day, they will surely be the minority party and an anachronism considering the demographic changes we have in the country.

I see you have the same trite banalities that lost the Dems the election last night all in order. Keep up the good work and remember to never stop blaming George W. Bush (even when Obama turns out to be an even WORSE president.....wow).

Yes, but labeling an argument, as you do, is different from pointing out how it may be wrong. Anyone cold say something is trite and banal without further thinking. It is the way Fox News operates. Obama could never be worse than Bush. He does not lie us into war. He tries to pay for what he does. He does not torture. He does not appoint polluters to all the EPA positions and have sycophantic lawyers willing to change the law for him.

Brilliant. Let's email the WH and some weak-ass Dems (buh bayh) this entire post.

Steve, you are just the best and I follow you on Political Animal and think that what you are saying is so true! I will email my Senators and Congressman and tell them to get a grip and just keep on working. They are all Dems.
