Wisconsin Republican Senate challenger Ron Johnson would not publicly challenge the White House on matters of war and peace from his perch if elected to the US Senate.

In a report from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Johnson makes clear that challenging the Executive Branch publicly when it comes to armed conflict is not something he would do -- except privately.

Johnson's most pointed comments were directed at Feingold, saying that when he and other senators "come out and start demanding a U.S. pullout and that kind of thing in public, it just undermines what our troops are trying to do."

Said Johnson: "That's not saying if you have real grave concerns as a member of Congress you should not be talking to the administration. It's just extremely harmful to our nation when it's all done in public."

Asked whether he was saying it's improper for Feingold or other senators to be speaking out publicly against the war, Johnson said: "I guess what I really object to is how quick and early he has been throughout his career (to criticize military action) .?.?.?he has been carping about this from the sidelines forever."

Johnson then repeated his suggestion that when there are troops in the field, lawmakers opposed to U.S. policy should be expressing their opposition in private rather than in public.

"There's an appropriate way of opposing a policy and an inappropriate way," he said. "The appropriate way if I'm a U.S. senator is going to be not public. If I'm opposed to something, I'll make those views known very, very well, but privately with the administration."

This is the most remarkable and disturbing statement I have ever read from anyone hoping to serve as his state's chief spear carrier in the US Senate.

Does Ron Johnson not have any background on the history of this Chamber and the many great Republicans and Democrats who have helped shape the national security decisions of the nation -- often knocking back or kicking along the White House?

As I was prepping for a recent discussion about US policy and the Afghanistan War at the PBS NewsHour studio, I had a conversation with Senator Russ Feingold (D-WI) which I share here.

I am in agreement with Senator Feingold on his take on Ron Johnson's disturbing comments.

More of my conversations with Senator Feingold later today.

It's very hard for a Senator to do anything in private. He can write as many angry letters to the White House as he wants, but if he doesn't show that he's willing to back them up with a public vote, they will tend to be ignored. The Senate is no place for someone who is reluctant to raise objections in public.

Out of the entire (mainly depressing) 2010 cycle, this election is the one I find most heartbreaking. I won't give up on Russ until the last vote is tallied, though.

It's nice to see the support for Feingold, but too little, too late. The Easter Bunny could beat him now. If I'm in error, I'll stand corrected and congratulate Mr. Feingold as he goes to lunch with Mr. McCain.

Why is anyone surprised at the lack of understanding that many of these new challengers have? Few, if any, have done any kind of study as to what the job they are running for is about or the history of the chamber they are trying to win. To many are saying things that they will do yet they will not be able to do because that kind of legislation is in the other chamber. They talk only of "getting our country back" yet the country never left. They talk about "socialism" yet don't seem to know the meaning of the word. The talk about making the "Bush tax cuts permanent" yet don't seem to understand how they are going to pay for them. Ignorance is bliss, but our country will suffer if they get in. Vote!

Johnson justs wants to do what all republicans want to do. Keep everything in the back room and out of the public eye. They view government as their feeding trough for their wealthy pals.

Kind of like all those back room deals to get health care passed.

No memories of the 8 years of Mr. Bush?

The troops need to know that we support them as a nation. When we stop supporting them, pull them out! Our troops have placed their lives on the line for our country. Their well being should be a priority, regardless of how we as citizens feel about the war.

I think its more disrespectful to send them to fight in the name of our country for an unjust war.

I think the best way to support them is to bring them home.

Who cares? I think the bigger issue is that outside dollars have gone in to get Feingold out of office because he consistently voted against bank bailouts. I think it is a real shame if he loses.

This is the best you got? This is your 11th hour hail mary?

Johnson says while troops are in the field he will express his opposition in private and you think this is disturbing.

Talk to a Gold Star Mother. Talk to anyone who have served in the military.

It is incredible how detached from reality the left is.

Hopefully, one dasy soon republican voters will see what a dismal voting record R's have when it comes to benefits and help for our troops and their families. They vote for Wars and defense contractor spending, but are horrible when voting for the soldiers and their families.
Please don't name the Gold Star Mom or veterans as a group that R's in office support, because they do not. Talk radio and Fox cover their butts so that voters don't look at the voting records. I pray that dittoheads and Fox followers begin to "Trust, but verify" ASAP

Actually it is the Right who is out of touch. They want to send your job overseas.
06:03 PM on 11/01/2010
The conservatives do not want jobs shipped overseas. Do not conclude that they are all like those in Washington.

That's as scary as the double-downed-claim that separation of church and state isn't in the constitution. At some point is this country going to simply declare that graduation from high school is a requirement for ANY public office? Oh. That's just to be mayor of Wasilla. I give up.

"Wisconsin Republican Senate challenger Ron Johnson would not publicly challenge the White House on matters of war and peace from his perch if elected to the US Senate."

Join the friggin' party. How many DEMS stood up to Obama's request for more troops for Afghanistan - or were vehement in insisting that Gitmo be closed.

Far from being some extremist outlier, this guy will fit right in to the' world's greatest deliberative body'....

Except it certainly does separate him from Feingold.
