Here's what the so-called "compassionate conservatives" have in mind in this week's budget:
*$70 billion in new tax breaks for the already rich.
*$50 billion in slashed budgets for the poor.

Republican Robin Hoods in Reverse--take from the poor, give to the rich.
On the one hand, they want to make the estate tax repeal permanent.
On the other hand, they want to follow up the devastation of Katrina--and the clearly visible race & class gap that Katrina made so plain to the entire world--by making that rich/poor gap larger.

Harold Meyerson does his usual concise job on this issue in today's column, "Gunning for the Poor".
