I'm reading the NY Times' February 14th editorial on VP Cheney's hunting accident, and in the first paragraph it says "It took the White House nearly 24 hours to share that information with the rest of the nation because Dick Cheney thought it would be better for the ranch's owner to give the story to the local newspaper first. And by the way, it was all the victim's fault....That's their story, and they're sticking with it." The editorial also says "Mr. Cheney pulled the trigger, forgetting one of the National Rifle Association's top rules for gun safety: "Be absolutely sure you have identified your target beyond any doubt. Equally important, be aware of the area beyond your target."

And by the way, it was all the victim's fault.

Yes folks. To paraphrase the classic NRA campaign slogan, "Guns don't kill people. People get in the way of the bullets that are fired at them."

If this wasn't happening for real, I would swear we were all living in a Marx Brothers movie, where Groucho has just said "Hello, I must be going."

If the VP of the "responsibility administration" (isn't that what they like to call themselves?) is not held responsible for pulling the trigger of a shot gun without seeing his friend moving between him and his target, then I see a wonderful new argument opening up for all the lawyers who represent people accused of shooting people.

"Your honor. My client is as innocent of this crime as was the Vice President of the United States of America. He didn't shoot the victim. The victim just got in the way of my client's gun."

Gee. Maybe I didn't realize the true definition of "Texas justice"?

It's the victim's fault.

Thanks, Mr. Cheney. You've set the principle - the American value - of being responsible for your own actions back God only knows how many years.

Heck of a job you're doin, Dickie!

I'm going to get out my copy of Animal Farm. I think it's time I read it again.
