The Zeal Thing

What's Your Reaction:

If the right wing has succeeded in doing anything (as certainly many of its loudly brayed sentiments have proved as revolting as they are socially untenable) it is the destruction of the office of President of the Unites States as a potent leader.

So degraded has the office become through the right wing's subversion, that it, along with most of the other aspects of a functioning federal government, cannot be mentioned without an attendant sneer. Carny trash invoke more sympathetic responses.

Every day, Congress is observed conducting business at a somnambulistic pace while below the ornate veneer, the real dealing churns and thrums with shocking efficiency; indeed if one were to tune into C-Span (which I do, as watching golf has proven to be too stressful), there is conspicuously interminable boredom, as though the dirty business actually being conducted has become as routine as the suicide-inducing rhythms of a bottling factory; the porky little congressmen and women waddle to a podium, utter faintly irate belches and then return to a place somewhere beyond the borders of the stationary camera's periphery. The poetry-in-slow-motion of the legislative process.

When Barack Obama was elected, he reminded the masses of dreams they heard about in school, and dreams they may have had themselves; that smarts and drive and verve could win the day, could be as antiseptic to the years of diseased ideals, corrosion and cronyism; his youth and grace under pressure would be a tonic to the studiously sown fear under the Bush regime, characterized daily by obvious hypocrisy and brazen disregard for the democratic standards upon which Americans base their allegiance.

So loyal to the myth of American democracy in fact, that the public dared not believe what their eyes so clearly saw, as neo-cons wiped their boots on the Constitution as though it were a wire brush mat, and the real legacy of Ronald Reagan was an unimpeded perpetual corporate shanghai; the dream of Democracy fatally broken by brazen opportunists who looked at America and saw not the greatest expression of a working democratic society but fodder for the most audacious scam ever pulled off. And as a result, "governophobia" has seeped into our national DNA in the same way trace amounts of Bisphenol and heavy metals have seeped into the breast milk of nursing mothers.

Here's the joke: all the hyperbole spewing like a pyroclastic flow from the volcanic right wing about socialism and communism and fascism is just white-guy-chicken-hawk-runaway-capitalist trash talk. Government has been reduced, thanks to their incessant assault on it, to a knuckle-dragging sporting event, with the country as brutish spectators barking ook-ooks and arrgh-arrghs, intoxicated by the contrived spectacle of the Big Government giant brought down by bureaucratic excess. And the punchline is that those cheering in the stands are the ones being buried under the rubble.

The office of POTUS is now as formidable as the winner of a beauty contest, thanks to those traitors in patriot's clothing, the right wing. With all that's happening to our country and our world, think of how effective their single-minded zeal might have been had it been put to use in a constructive way, instead of toward the death of Democracy.

Completely accurate in every respect, Mr. Weber, and how refreshing to have it put so clearly. I would only add the disgrace of re-electing someone with Alzheimers to the office, someone who was clearly not intelligent enough or educated enough to hold the office, (especially for 8 years) and the mind boggling choice of someone so unfit to hold any office let alone VP (just that heartbeat away, don'cha know) as further evidence of the right to destroy the presidency and the government.

"But you must remember, my fellow-citizens, that eternal vigilance by the people is the price of liberty, and that you must pay the price if you wish to secure the blessing. It behooves you, therefore, to be watchful in your States as well as in the Federal Government." ~Andrew Jackson, Farewell Address, March 4, 1837
Seems to contradict your view that conservatives in recent history have created conditions in which "'governophobia' has seeped into our national DNA". I prefer to interpret that members of both parties have stopped doing the will of the people and act only in the interest of themselves.

Perhaps you can show me where Andrew Jackson became an unimpeachable philosopher? For many of us, he was just double-crossing opportunistic criminal against black or red humanity.

No, here's the joke..... 50% of the huffpo readers support a hard left turn to socialism and communism . Don't believe me ? Do a poll and find out who your audience really is and what they really believe.

i'm in vermont and socialism isn't a dirty scary word to us. maybe you should read up on it, or visit scandinavia! you might find it more interesting and humane than the classic fascism of the republican party- and the old confederate south. as for communism- that never did quite evolve into a reality the way marx thought it would- your john birch caricature of communism is baloney. i think "from each according to ability to each according to need" is an ideal all should strive for - of course it sounds sort of christian new testament... but i try to live that way.

seems like protesting the debasement of the presidency while using the chic new acronym POTUS, seems a a bit disingenuous, don't you think?

Mr. Weber,

Are you really going to blame the Republican Party for the sub par, inept and downright amateurish leadership that is coming out of the oval office? We, as a nation, elected a man who was not ready to lead this country. He can give a great speech but he just doesn't have the experience to back it up. You, Mr. Weber, need to hold the president responsible for his words and actions. Keep blaming the Republicans for everything and no one will take you seriously.

What positives came out of the Bush administration?
02:53 AM on 06/18/2010
Repeating dottering old bought-out McCain's piped-in campaign rhetoric does not make it valid. The Republican Party's ineptitude since Ike is epic, accelerating, and really is causing terrible, perhaps mortal, damage to the American Experiment in democracy. So awfully, wrenchingly sad, so obvious, yet this fools' pulpit gives mindless fools the means to destroy themselves, and us, and so much more.

...wow-- 'wolf' you really need to get out more ... lets review the prior administration for 'Death of Democracy'-- by the way, we're also a Republic ... you remember the pledge of allegiance:

The Bush administration, which during 2,920 days presided over foreign policy blundering (Korea, Iran), domestic policy blundering (Katrina, Rita), a trillion in war related debt (Iraq, Afghanistan), political pronouncements followed by inaction (We're addicted to oil), crony/ incompetent political appointments (Brownie, you're doing a helluva job), a fear premised national security policy (we'll keep you safe), a global economic melt down, the near abrogation of the Bill of Rights (secret legal memos, wire taps), the return of torture (water boarding) and disregard for the Geneva Conventions (Abu Ghraib), world wide loss of American prestige and humiliation (shoe throwing incident), Karl Rove's 'permanent majority' (DOJ firing's), Dick Cheney (Valerie Plame, Scooter Libby falls on his sword, Enron collapse, no bid Halliburton contracts, JSOC team reporting directly to office of the VP), its mind blowing really. Its also true that almost every administration is remembered for one or more political blunders-- Eisenhower (U2), Kennedy (Bay of Pigs, Marilyn Monroe), Johnson (Vietnam), Nixon (Watergate), Carter (Panama Canal, Hostages), Regan (Oliver North), Bush1 (lengthy recession), Clinton (Lewinsky)-- but George W. Bush leads everyone.

GREAT RESPONSE!!! Though living abroad, I've watched from afar for the past ten years as the US has gone down the toilet under the leadership(and I use that term loosely) of the Republican party!! Bush2, though I'm honestly beginning to believe he was a puppet controlled by Cheney and the rest of his daddy's morons, embarrassed and stripped the US of ANY international respect. In fact, the US is scoffed and laughed at now by most of the world because of them.
As for domestic problems, as you've written so well, has destroyed the spirit of the constitution and all the grand and noble ideals contained therein.
I can only hope that the rest of the world is wrong when it laughs at the impending doom of what was once the greatest country in the world.
RIP US!!

My God, please learn how to write. I wanted to read what you have to say, but got lost in all your run-on sentences and big words (by the way, this doesn't make you sound smart, it just makes your article harder to read. . . and I have a Master's degree). Imagine what your average reader goes through! Get concise and clear. Your readers will thank you for it!

My question is: Have we really seen the death of the Office of the President of the United States, or the death of the notion that Democrats can hold that office? Will the same impotence be expected or encouraged should a Republican gain that post? Or will the rabid rightwing just steamroll America back in the other direction, embuing the POTUS with mythic or, dare I say, godlike powers to mold, by Executive Order, our country into the Neocon vision they aspired to during the Days of the Shrub? With the left and center of our political spectrum reduced to mere lumps of fetid dough despite holding the numerical advantage, is there anything to prevent Neocons from "getting it right" the next time? Gee, I hope there is...too many Americans have died already.
03:39 PM on 06/17/2010
You sir, are obviously grossly misinformed. The center is the only group that has it even remotely correct. The other two extremes are, well extreme and wrong. Both the left and the right want to use executive order to create their vision... recently remarks from the left regarding the wish that the left could just suspend democracy to get their agenda through and into law, if even just for a day have been in the news. BOTH sides have already had their chance and it is time for someone new to take over. It will never happen though because "Neocons" and "Leftist Whackjobs" are so hung up over themselves they will only vote for someone who subscribes to their ideology. Neither of which is correct. Fiscal conservancy, keeping our noses out of wars, and making people responsible for their own financial shortcomings instead of generations of welfare bums who work the system are how our Government should run. The government should be reducing the healthcare costs, not making 50% of the people pay for everyones healthcare. Our government is corrupt, lobbyists run our county. Every politician supports these lobbyists, every one of them. They get rich off of them and we the people can do nothing about it. They don't speak for us, they pretend to speak for us while lobbyist stuff their pockets. Why else would a Democrat President be the largest receiver of funds from BP if he would hurt their business?
02:20 PM on 06/17/2010
What a a bunch of drivel. The right has done nothing to this President that he has not already done to himself. He does not have the experience the common sense to know right from wrong and he is with the Democrat party itself which is a backwards, unrealistic party in itself. A bunch of over spending gluttonous pigs. You talk about traitorous to the Country that would be the left that cow tows to our enemies and has a horrible horrible agenda.
02:46 PM on 06/17/2010
Keep talking there buddy. I love the way you demonstrate your ignorance.

Steven, can you look yourself in the mirror, and NOT see "Hypocrite". "...it is the destruction of the office of President of the Unites States as a potent leader." could very well sum up the Left's treatment of GWB for 8 years, or are the terms "Nazi" and "Chimp" suddenly unknown to you. Get real, while there might be some truth in lamenting the demeaning of the office, the Left is the last group to throw stones at the practice, they perfected it!

Walker, it was just carrying over the lessons learned from the Rightwing in their needless prosecution of Clinton for simply getting oral sex and being unwilling to confess it on a national stage. We still hear the "wide stance" defense from the Right for their sexual exploits, but maybe the Left and Center are too sensible and unwilling to spend mountains of tax dollars on pointless prosecutions of such unimportant matters.

Now prosecuting elected officials for using torture, spying illegally on Americans and, possibly, ordering the deaths of thousands of our citizens simply to gain a foothold in the Middle East...yeah, I could get behind that kind of prosecution. Maybe we should hold that in Utah because then we can just line up a firing squad.

What unmitigated rubbish. The Democrats have gone steadily Left over the past 50 years. Or more accurately, they allowed the party of JFK to be taken over by far Left Wing Extremist Elements.

A core strategy of the Left around the world is to first divide a nation. This is a Communist strategy. No sense in trying to deny it, it is a well known fact in political science. Divide the nation along any and all lines possible. Agitate. Foment turmoil. The Democrat Left has employed it with subversive zeal. Be proud Communists, stop slinking around like rats. Get out of the closet and embrace your inner Komrade. What? Communist is a “dirty” name? Perhaps because truth will outshine the far Left any day. Can you believe these Democrats? They spend decades dividing the nation and then whine about inheriting the results.

The Left is furious that the opposition is now copying their tactics. The Left feels that they, and only they, have the right to “protest” in America and anywhere else in the world. It annoys them to see anyone else doing it. Seriously, you have to be really stupid or really naive to think that eventually others won’t start picking up your own political strategy’s and employ them back against you.

Memo to the Left: Only employ political strategies against others, that you can actually take when they are used back against you. You are not nearly as clever as you think you are.

What a convulted, incoherent mess you've made.

You claim that "A core strategy of the Left around the world is to first divide a nation. This is a Communist strategy. " No definition of why this is a "Communist strategy", but no matter. Later, you balk: "The Left is furious that the opposition is now copying their tactics." Ohhkkaayy, so therefore the folks on the Right are employing said "Communist strategy". So, you're saying "if you can't beat the Communists, join 'em"?

A lot of words you state, but not much thought behind them.

Thank you, gwix. I LOVE it when people make fun of pseudointellectuals. Funny thing is, they TRY to sound educated while actively battling everything education stands for: Unbiased examination of the facts followed by creating coherent, logical, well-framed conclusions. No, instead we get invective and laughable cut&paste jobs that steal from popular rightwing online nuthouses.
