A Mother's Secret Revealed

Posted: 08/17/2012 6:59 pm

"I have spent a lot of years just hiding from it."

In today's StoryCorps broadcast on NPR's Morning Edition, 40-year-old Julie Sanders sat down to discuss a part of her past she has never shared. At age 16, she belonged to a white supremacist group -- and one night in 1988, found herself at the scene of a murder.

She's kept this a secret from most of her friends and family. In fact, before sitting down with a friend at StoryCorps, Julie had rarely talked about her past at all.

Take a listen to this powerful story.

Brave woman for speaking out. Good that she has brought her own children up to 'make a difference' but how sad that she felt so insignificant that she fell prey to these people in the first place. I cannot give her forgiveness - that is between her and her God - but she paid the price that the justice system demanded of her. She's changed her life round, and she's trying to do better. That's all we can ask of anyone.
