6 Tips For Healthy, Glowing Summer Skin

Posted: 07/28/11 09:26 AM ET

Believe it or not, the key to healthy, glowing summer skin is not basking in the sun. As a skin-tanning expert and organic foodie, I offer six tips for keeping your skin healthy and beautiful all summer long -- and even into the early autumn months:

Play Shy With The Sun

Sun exposure is responsible for up to 90 percent of aging damage. Minimizing UV exposure is the best way to prevent skin damage and many types of skin cancer. Let's face it, the sun is everywhere and it is no coincidence that you feel good when you're in it.
Studies show that sunlight exposure can affect your emotional well-being -- either by lifting your mood or leading to depression.

Safely use the sun to benefit your mood by spending 30 minutes outside, but never in direct sunlight. Some skin will always be exposed, so I'd recommend protecting it using sunscreen with an SPF of 30. Apply sunscreen 30 minutes before sun exposure and reapply frequently. Look chic on the beach with a great hat or umbrella. Skin cancer can develop in anyone. Know your skin and see your dermatologist annually.

I wouldn't get a spray tan I read an article at dr.mercola.com about them and how the chemicals in it gets into the blood stream and causes problems later yrs to come. Which made since, I doubt the companies are using all natural ingredients in the chemical they spray on you. There is alot of good articles on his website and he is a medical dr. that believes in a all natural approach.

Good article. Thanks. You should also consider juicing fresh fruits and veggies. I noticed that every time I did that, my skin looked incredible!

I will try the spray tanning thing. Sounds really good! I just wondered if you can get a spray tan and then go swimming? Would it all come off? For instance, let's say I get a spray tan before I go on a cruise. I have a natural tan and live in an area where it's sunny. As a matter of fact the cruise sets sail where I live. I wanted to know if once I go in the swimming pool would the spray tan come right off, and if some of it does, would it ruin my swim suit? Wouldn't some of it come off in the pool? And there will be a lot of people poolside on that cruise. I wanted to make sure if I get a spray tan, then all of it wouldn't come off in the pool, especially since there will be concerts going on poolside with a ton of people there. Thanks.

Have you considered opening a spray salon in Palm Beach? Would love to see that!
