This gold-medal excellence shouldn't be feared or seen as unsportsmanlike. But at a deeper level, taking the most golds will confirm to the Chinese people that their leaders have been doing right all along.

The most worrisome aspect of the Beijing Games' legacy may be the lesson that aggressive regimes of the future will take from it -- attack your adversary while the world is glued to the Opening Ceremonies.

Here's the problem: as of yet, there is no system in place in the business world that can duplicate the rush of an Olympiad.
Grant Cardone, 08.21.2008
While retreating appears to be the logical step in business, you would never do this if you knew you had a terminal illness and want to live.

The Olympic coverage isn't helping millions of Americans get to bed on time. No wonder a few of us are lagging in the morning this week.
David Flumenbaum, 08.14.2008
Not only was He Kexin, the Chinese gymnast in question, born in 1994 and ineligible to compete in the Olympics, but Chinese officials, over the last few weeks, have tried to cover it all up.

The medals, which were supposed to be made entirely of gold, were instead found to be composed of 99% lead alloy and coated with a gold-colored lead-based paint.

Every morning for breakfast I have three sandwiches of fried eggs, cheese, lettuce, tomato, fried onions, and mayonnaise, one omelet, a bowl of grits,...

Prospects did not look good for a gold two laps into the medley. Backstroke was first -- the US was in the top three but no decisive lead here.

It's called the Speedo LZR Racer. Credited with dozens of world records, it's not sewn but welded together, was engineered by NASA, produces 38% less ...

As an ABC-- American-Born-Chinese -- I had to settle for a less personal sort of honor and pride in "returning" to my family's homeland.

For the unprecedented Olympics ad buys, Obama started out positive and uplifting -- as befits the positive uplift of the Olympics media environment. McCain went in, well, a different direction.
Vanessa Richmond, 08.14.2008
Sports fans may still be watching, but the Olympics have gone quiet on the pop culture radar. The Games used to be the champion of reality TV, but now the new generation of reality TV athlete is faster, higher and stronger.
Celia Alario, 08.20.2008
A few hours before iTunes became blocked in China, news surfaced about Songs for Tibet, a compilation CD offered free to Olympic athletes.
Naomi Klein, 08.07.2008
You are about to be awed by China's sheer awesomeness. The Olympics are the coming out party for a disturbingly efficient way of organizing society that China is finally ready to show off.

If Phelps is going to inspire little boys to work on their butterfly, what in heaven's name is Hunter's pay-off going to encourage little girls to do?

This explains why we've had so many natural disasters lately - Jesus is too busy helping people win sporting events.
Praying to God to give you victory is also praying to God that another of his creatures lose. You really think God plays favorites like that?
I always thought it arrogant and hypocritical that athletes openly show their thanks for their god-dude/dudette when they do well but never when they fail. Or that they pray to keep them safe but never have anything to say when they get injured. Boggles the mind how hard people work to support their myths but not to educate themselves or help others.
Thank you for finally going public with what I've noticed for decades.
