Yes the political intransigence and cheap slogans of those on the extremes of the gun control debate are pervasive. But haven't we allowed that by our silence? Instead, be part of creating a new course of conversation.
I don't want to get into a debate about gun control, violence in movies and video games, or the sorry support for mental health services in this homeland of ours. But as a technologist I know there is something we can do to help.
Much of our life is dedicated to an attempt to understand through reason -- rational, logical thought -- our existence. But when one human kills a dozen or more other humans who represent no threat to him, nothing seems to make sense, nothing is reasonable or rational.
After every mass shooting, Americans almost always respond in the same way: by strengthening security in public areas. However, it is questionable if security is the only area that should be focused on.
This is the time for politics, before we do what we always do after such massacres -- shed some tears, express our grief, say a few prayers, and then quickly go on to do what the gun lobby wants us to do: change the subject.
