When people think of study abroad, they most commonly think of how difficult it is to be forced to transition into a foreign society and culture in the time it takes to snap your fingers. However, integrating back into one's home culture following months of time abroad is not a cakewalk either.
Years ago I found myself in a bad situation: I'd made bad career decisions, needed the right job, was running dangerously low on cash, and my confidence (or belief in myself) was near an all-time low. So I asked my mother if I could move into her house for a while.
We don't air our struggles and ask for pity regarding our troubles but the public should be exposed to the true, unglamorous sacrifices our service members and their families' make. Not the staged glory.
Do we have the intestinal fortitude to live this marvelous nature out today, that part of us that lives beyond self-criticism, judgment, comparison and down-right making ourselves wrong for what we didn't achieve?
Mad Men is, sadly, off the air till the summer. But it is definitely on a roll. Earlier in January, it won as best dramatic series at the Golden Globes, the Screen Actors Guild, and the Producers Guild, among others.
