There is already a great deal of Oscar buzz about Swank's portrayal of Betty Anne Waters' eighteen year struggle against the injustice suffered by her brother. But such instances of injustice need to be a larger part of the real-life public discussion as well.

I know a lot of people who have grown up with a lot more advantages than John Thompson who don't have as much perspective as he does. I hope he wins his legal battle -- but John Thompson is a winner either way, and a win's a win.

California has 670 people on death row. Each one of them costs the state about $90,000 per year over what it would cost to keep them in prison if they were condemned to permanent jail time instead.
