Today President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation freeing 3 million slaves. Critics of the President were quick to condemn his action. The town crier shouted that that this was further evidence of the President's war on families.

It's difficult to strike a balance between being everything our kids need us to be and maintaining our sanity and individuality.

No matter how much household help a mother does or doesn't have, it is she who conveys the values that she wants her children to live by. Whether a mother is a SAHM or works 16-hour days, she is a role model for her children.
Rabbi Abraham Unger, Ph.D. | Posted 04.03.2012
A peculiar form of American isolationism has gripped our country. The rest of the world is fending off potentially disastrous immediate economic contagion, while we expend much of our national energy on social issues pretty much decided years ago.

My relatives might as well be pairs of Jehovah's Witnesses or Mormons -- strangers at the door -- for all they have to do with me. They ring my bell, as it were, several times a year, only to press my arm into a spiritual blood pressure cuff of their own devising: Am I saved or, as they suspect, not?

How has Christianity come to be understood as the harbinger of traditional family values? Why do political parties still invoke Jesus as leader of these traditional ideas, when He, Paul and the other apostles never embraced them?

With all due respect to Obama, whose support for women is welcome, we're so beyond the question of free civic discourse. That we're quibbling about the right to contraception in 2012 is terrifying.
June Carbone | Posted 05.05.2012
The war on contraception is not new. What is new is that the consequences are finally becoming visible to women who vote.

In his new book, Coming Apart, Charles Murray says that working-class whites are getting dumber and losing traditional values such as marriage, hard work and church-going.

I'm marrying the love of my life, and unlike New Gingrich, Rush Limbaugh, Ronald Reagan, and Bob Barr, the author of the Defense of Marriage Act, when I say "I do," I'll mean it. If we're talking family values, I'm ahead.

I agree with Santorum et al. that the American family is indeed under attack. The question is: By whom?
June Carbone | Posted 04.01.2012
Charles Murray is at it again, out with a new book and a long article in the Wall Street Journal attempting to explain income inequality among whites.

I have a new favorite candidate... Newt! America loves family values and Newt's got 'em in spades! At least in my opinion.
Christian Piatt | Posted 03.28.2012
The fact is that, unless you're a white, Christian, straight male, there's little to look back to and say "yeah, I was better off back then."
John Becker | Posted 03.24.2012
Newt's ego is so monumental that once he could no longer conceal his affair, he had the temerity to demand in all seriousness that his wife "share" him with his mistress.

Can we move the discussion of family away from demonizing same-gender relationships and taking rights away from women?

Single parenting is challenging, especially when money is scarce. It's taken a huge toll, hitting home today when my daughter pointed out I've turned into Scrooge.

Rick Santorum proclaims: "Ask me what motivates me, it's been the dignity of every human life." Unless it's a gay or lesbian life.
Dan Bimrose | Posted 03.05.2012
Rick Santorum's implication is that the Democrats are responsible for broken families. If the breaking up of American families is truly the cause of our economic failures, which is an incredibly weak argument, he may want to point his finger at Republicans like himself.

I would vote for Bachmann for her renowned knowledge of the Constitution, her familiarity with our Founding Fathers, her interpretation of the history of slavery, and for her commitment to the integration of Church and State.

Jesus once said that our family members are not just the ones we share a family tree with, but he never said it would always be tidy and reciprocal.

America does not have to choose between continuing to be the greatest nation on earth and being a compassionate, tolerant, inclusive and united society. It is the latter that has made America great.
