Should we exert force abroad for the national interest? (And how do we define national interest?) When and where should we use force for a humanitarian cause? Or should the U.S. withdraw from the international theater to focus on challenges at home?
Obama is well-spoken and polite, but all his rhetoric about multilateralism has had no tangible meaning. The discourse within the foreign affairs community is replete with "they shoulds" and "they musts."
We are frustrated, as a people, by cold, impersonal logic, by being excluded, and by criticism and lack of appreciation. We value self-determination, and we irritate others by being overly emotional and moralistic.
