Republicans: The Boston Marathon Bombing Was the President's Fault! Impeach!

Bob Cesca | Posted 04.25.2013 | Politics
Bob Cesca

It's all yet another case study in how the Republicans too often comport themselves in the wake of a disaster -- these self-proclaimed "patriots" are merely selective, fair-weather patriots, only willing to lend their unified support when the president is from their own party.

The Elephant in the Room: Militarism

Jeff Cohen | Posted 04.12.2013 | Media
Jeff Cohen

I spent years as a political pundit on mainstream TV -- at CNN, Fox News and MSNBC. I was outnumbered, outshouted, red-baited and finally terminated. Inside mainstream media, I saw that major issues were not only dodged, but sometimes not even acknowledged to exist. Today there's an elephant in the room: a huge, yet ignored, issue that largely explains why Social Security is now on the chopping block. And why other industrialized countries have free college education and universal healthcare, but we don't. It's arguably our country's biggest problem -- a problem that Martin Luther King Jr. focused on before he was assassinated 45 years ago, and has only worsened since then (which was the height of the Vietnam War). That problem is U.S. militarism and perpetual war.

Bill O'Reilly and Glenn Beck: Champions of Gay Rights?

Michelangelo Signorile

O'Reilly surely is quite cognizant of keeping his ratings high as he sees support for gay marriage rise rapidly in the polls. But if the debate over marriage equality now needs to move into the Fox News audience, it's certainly not a bad thing to have O'Reilly taking on the anti-equality crowd.

The Sequestration Fight Is Based on Lies and Stupidity

Bob Cesca | Posted 05.01.2013 | Politics
Bob Cesca

There are two sides to the deficit idiocy. Firstly, the completely inexcusable conflation of the deficit and the debt, and, secondly, the total failure to acknowledge actual deficit reduction. As a result, deficit hysteria is based on nearly unprecedented stupidity and deliberate deception.

Glenn Beck is building an amusement park called -- what else? -- Independence Park. But he's pitching it to be much more than a roadside tourist trap with a tilt-a-whirl, concessions and skeeball. Beck wants his herd of followers to believe it's a real city -- his own version of Ayn Rand's "Galt's Gulch."

The Crazy Base Won't Let the Republican Party Change

Bob Cesca | Posted 02.05.2013 | Politics
Bob Cesca

The bumper-sticker party of "these colors don't run" -- the party that practically branded the notion of American patriotism -- is only around half-sure that it doesn't want to abandon the United States. The other half is split between still making up its mind on secession and totally wanting to secede right away.
