Brian Center: A Shout Out To Will Ferrell And Friends

How much impact does a celebrity make when he or she donates their name and time to a non-profit? Here is my experience.

On February 20, at the Nokia Theatre at L.A. LIVE in downtown Los Angeles, Will Ferrell and his friends, like Zach Galifianakis and Demetri Martin, will put on a comedy extravaganza with skits and music based on their successful "Funny or Die" Tour. They are doing it to support Pete Carroll (our founder and Board Chair) and our non-profit, A Better LA.

We expect the evening to raise a good chunk of money, which is fantastic. Those dollars will fund outreach workers in LA and programs for kids that will literally save lives and engage kids who have never been engaged before in positive activities.

But the impact goes beyond the money. It affects the entire operation of the non-profit and has already buoyed every person working behind the scenes or on the front line.

Take me for example. As the Executive Director, I experience a high when I see hope in a kid's eyes or see a scenario play out that saves lives. Like the time I watched our outreach workers operate in a way that -- according to law enforcement -- stopped a war and prevented at least several homicides and all of the destruction and chaos that goes along with senseless violence. A week later, I experienced the low of hearing about a young man being killed over nothing -- sitting in his neighborhood and being mistaken for someone else. I then felt the sensation of wondering what more I could be doing to stop violence.

I have spoken with a lot of people in the non-profit profession, and most experience what I am talking about. If you don't have the right attitude, burnout can be a real problem. You can get sucked into a cycle of feeling like you are never doing enough. If I spend the day making calls for donations, that is time away from the community where I could be making a direct impact. If I spend too much time in the community and fail at fundraising, we won't be able to implement programs. If someone loses their life, I somehow could have done something to prevent it. I know it is irrational and I quickly push all of those thoughts aside, but I know many people who get caught up in it. And my experience is much less intense than those working on the front lines every day. In other words, non-profit and community transformation work can be tough.

So, it is an incredibly uplifting feeling to now have CAA agents and staff from AEG and the Staples Center Foundation working with us to sell out the 7,000 seat Nokia Theatre. It makes fundraising so much easier when the Board of Directors and other supporters can, instead of just asking for checks, invite friends to fancy VIP parties surrounding the event. And it brings such credibility to our operation to be able to mention (at every chance I get) the Will Ferrell event. It makes everyone proud to have these really talented entertainers by our side.

And it creates a tremendous morale boost for the community workers and police officers who put so much time and emotion on the line every day. They get to see busy and famous people helping them to continue their work. It's not just a boost to morale, it seriously is a life changer.

So, to Will Ferrell and his friends, who are making such a big impact on the lives of those behind the scenes of our non-profit, and the Los Angeles community, thanks! We can't wait for February 20.

So, let's recap: Jon Gosselin, a man who fathered eight children and raised them on TV, decided this year that he wasn't happy and walked on his family and took all their money. He immediately started dating two trashy blond chicks (who, admittedly, have better hair than his wife) and partying with other d-list scumbags like Michael Lohan. This, of course, came with a change of style, which in Jon's case included diamond studs in both ears, a lot of hair gel, and even more Ed Hardy. (We can't prove it, but we're pretty sure some Axe Body Spray was also involved.)

So now he seems full of regret and uber-sad that everyone hates him and wants to go through a de-douchification program. While most of us would think that would mean moving back to live in the same zip code as his kids, working hard so they're not dependent on the money from reality television and ceasing to sleep with 22-year-olds, to Jon Gosselin this means making a Funny or Die Video. Yes, Jon Gosselin's road to redemption is paved with bikini-clad women telling him how much they'll miss him and a montage in which he throws out all his hair products. We're pretty sure this makes us hate him more.

Greg Mitchell: Beyond "Balloon Dad": Web Series Continue Startling Growth

Last month, I posted here for the first time on the growing popularity of Web comedy and dramatic series, suggesting they were a growing threat, down the road a bit, to network TV series. This was inspired by noting that The New York Times had just featured for the first time, in its fall print Arts preview, a wrap-up on what is coming from Web series. My overall interest in this field had been sparked by my filmmaker son directing two series this year.

That post proved so popular I am back with another, coinciding with Web Television Week activities.

One has to admit, however, that the biggest Web series news of the past week was the massive publicity for the wacky science series The Psyience Detectives produced by Richard Heene, the Balloon Dad. It never got off the ground, so to speak, but the genre will survive for sure.

As evidence:

--Mashable in its monthly Top 10 most popular Web series observed that the ten alone combined for over 93 million streams -- and thousands of other series added considerably to that, of course.

--Netflix announced last week that horror film legend Roger Corman will produce a new series called Splatter, directed by Gremlins guy Joe Dante and starring, get this, Corey Feldman. Corman is making his Web debut -- at age 93.

--At the same time, each week brings another unlikely success story that encourages young 'uns to continue to seek mainstream breakthroughs following this route (instead of the former attempts via writing screenplays or getting producers coffee on the set). From the Hollywood Reporter today: "In summer 2008, four college friends pooled $6,000 to shoot a 15-minute presentation for a Web series. A year later, the demo attracted Thomas Schlamme (Sports Night, The West Wing) as executive producer and sparked interest from a couple of TV networks as a comedy series, landing at ABC with a script commitment."

--Another key bit of news in the field this week is that the L.A.-based web series site Tube Filter has purchased friendly New York rival Tilzy.tv The companies had worked together to launch the Streamy Awards and the International Academy of Web Television. Tilzy created the web series answer to the mainstream "upfronts," amusingly calling them the "onfronts." Tube Filter's monthly "meetup" in L.A. this week drew over 500 participants.

-- Hollywood screenwriter James Gunn's latest web series, Humanzee, was dropped as a bit too offensive by original patrons XBox Live and Spike.com. Meanwhile, Sony's zombie web series Woke Up Dead got 1.4 million streams on Crackle.com in just ten days since its premiere. A new favorite of mine is Old Friends, from Crossroads Films, with several episodes here.

--Just as Parker Posey was the "queen" of the indies a few years ago, Illeanna Douglas seems to be holding that position with Web series, what with her popular Ikea-related project Easy to Assemble, its funny spinoff about fake Swedish band (starring Keanu Reeves) Sparhusen, and more. (Note: Not long ago I wrote a book about her famous aunt, Helen Gahagan Douglas and her 1950 campaign vs. Richard Nixon, Tricky Dick and the Pink Lady.)

--I would be remiss if I did not mention that my son's series, MacAwesome, just launched with two episodes over at Koldcast TV. In a perhaps not typical scenario, it grew out of his senior film school film, which has also just been selected for this year's Asheville Film Festival.

All signs point to growing viewership for Web series. Mashable concludes its Top 10 report, "Clearly made-for-the-web shows no longer have to live in the shadows of their studio-produced network television counterparts. We're excited to see the space continue to develop. Will we see new shows disrupt the status quo, or consistent competitors solidify their place atop the webisode food chain? Only time will tell."

Illeanna Douglas recently said on an industry panel in New York: "A year ago people came to me and were like 'what are you doing?' ... We're at the tipping point where people are saying 'Now, I get it.'"

THE BOX: Why Do Movies Make Everything So Complicated? (VIDEO)

In the upcoming Cameron Diaz flick "The Box," a suburban couple with a young child receives a simple box as a gift. A stranger tells them that if they press the button inside they will receive $1 million, but it will simultaneously kill someone they don't know. According to the film's producers these characters "find themselves in the cross-hairs of a startling moral dilemma and must face the true nature of their humanity."

Fortunately for Mark, when he gets a visit from a stranger with a box for the following Funny or Die video, he has a much easier time with this choice.

Funny Or Die's Insurance Company Parody Draws "Response" Video

For your viewing enjoyment, here's a "response" video to the Funny Or Die "Protect Insurance Companies" fake-PSA from last week. Response videos can be funny! This one, sadly, reminds me of that time when a bunch of people attempted to glom on to Saturday Night Live "Lazy Sunday" video by making "responses" that weren't as funny, at all. It's called "the Law of Diminishing Returns," and it's something that anyone who's uninsured can appreciate, in the moments before their deaths from eminently treatable diseases.

Anyway, there's little attempt here to address the underlying point of the original, which was that those crafting the health care reform bill were beholden to lobbyists from the major insurance companies. The overall point to this "response" is a reinforcement of Galty anti-tax oversimplifications and a generic, don't listen to celebrities, instead listen to people like AHIP and record-setting grifters like Rick Scott instead. On the substance, the "response ad" points out that groups like PhRMA and health insurance lobbyists have been meeting with White House officials and Nancy Pelosi. That's a good point! Of course, this was the very thing that the original video underscored.

Elsewhere, you get fearmongering about how America will run out of doctors if we attempt to insure everybody, so a few tens of millions of you will have to go on making your noble sacrifice for the rest of the country. WE MUST RATION HEALTH CARE IN ORDER TO SAVE IT, FROM RATIONING! And of course, there's the requisite moment where they just start lying, like when they suggest that "71% of physicians disagree that the public option will provide better quality care at a lower cost." They have this precisely reversed: Physicians "by a large majority, support adding a government run health insurance program that would compete with private insurance."

But hey, the guy aping Jon Hamm's vocal tics is pretty good at it. Probably a huge Mad Men fan!

Ted Johnson, Maegan Carberry, Teresa Valdez Klein: Infotainment Rules: Should Letterman, DeLay and Ferrell Dominate Discourse?

Today, we talk the politics of culture (or is it cultural politics?), starting off with our president. How much should Obama be seen and heard as he runs the country? After Bush kept to himself most of the time, we've got a president who hits all these talk shows on one Sunday morning, and then hits late night with David Letterman (same questions, same answers, same blah). Maegan makes a smart observation - Obama is being very generic in his outreach, and that's why it's not making much of an impact. If he was reaching out online, or at least appearing on Fox News, wouldn't that have been more notable?

It is interesting to watch Letterman these days, who is becoming subtly more political. Could Letterman be reaching for some of Jon Stewart's magic? After all, when was the last time Dave won an Emmy? That also brings up the new video from Will Farrell, FunnyOrDie.com, and MoveOn.org, which steps into the health care debate by mocking how much reform could harm health care executives. Do these videos have any real impact, beyond the 1.5 million views? When was the last time Ferrell changed your mind about anything, other than the dangers of babies as landlords?

Speaking of danger, the Hammer is loose! But this time, instead of knocking heads in Congress, Tom DeLay is shaking his hips on Dancing with the Stars. The reviews are, ahem -- who the hell cares? It's shocking and amazing, and the guy's still under indictment in Texas. Wait until Sarah Palin shows up for the finale! Fingers crossed!

While DeLay wasn't in attendance, last week saw the Values Voters Summit in DC, with Carrie Prejean as the keynote speaker. She, um, well, condemned the "intolerance" of the gays and liberals that led her to lose her crown as Ms. California (no irony there) and stated that God had chosen her for this new role in politics. Of course, Teresa validly points out how Prejean was not stripped of her crown for political reasons, a fact that's been glossed over by Prejean herself. It extends the "forgetting reality" theme of the GOP, but then, we all love a little escapism. Just next time, instead of spurned beauty queen, can we stick with robots fighting each other?

Finally, we touch on the Yes Men and their wonderful fake New York Post that they handed out this week. They have a new documentary coming out in a few weeks, The Yes Men Fix The World, but do these types of stunt documentaries really change anything? Like the Ferrell video, are they only for the converted?

In a satiric video from Funny or Die, Will Ferrell, Jon Hamm, Olivia Wilde, and other celebs band together to "protect" insurance company profits from the evils of health care reform.

"People are saying a lot of mean things about health insurance companies and their executives and it's gotta stop," pleads Thomas Lennon.

"These great business men are American heroes," says Linda Cardellini.

"So why is Obama trying to reform health care when insurance companies are doing just fine making billions of dollars in profit?" Will Ferrell asks.

Funny or Die has history of using celebrities and humor to take a stance on political issues. Last year they released "Prop 8: The Musical" starring Jack Black, Neil Patrick Harris, Margaret Cho, and more satirizing the push for a ban on gay marriage in California.

This "Insurance PSA," paid for by and produced with MoveOn.org, ends with a call to action, asking people to call their congressmen and tell them we need a strong public option.
