Jennifer Aniston is getting in the holiday spirit.

The actress, 40, kicked off the festive season with a party for her close friends and employees at her Beverly Hills house on Sunday. Among the nearly 100 guests who attended the celebration were Courteney Cox, Laura Dern, yoga instructor Mandy Ingber, hairstylist Chris McMillan and Aniston's acting coach Leigh Kilton Smith.

Some celebrities' names are as outrageous as their stage costumes (Lady Gaga and Pink come to mind) but you may not realize just how many actors were born with names they shed or modified upon arrival in Hollywood. Whether to minimize (real or imagined) ethnic bias or just for vanity's sake, these big names are not the ones their parents gave them. Who changed for the better and who's just being silly? You decide.
A few of Hollywood's biggest stars spent Thanksgiving at a black tie Moroccan bash instead of eating turkey dinners.

Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Aniston, Salma Hayek and more turned out at a party celebrating the reopening of the La Mamounia hotel in Marrakesh, Morocco on Thursday night.

Some, like Juliette Binoche and Orlando Bloom, aren't American so it was just another Thursday to them. But, in addition to Paltrow and Aniston, American actor Adrien Brody also chose an appearance paycheck over a family dinner.
Watching a Live Eight charity concert inspired Mary Fanaro to contribute towards easing poverty in Africa. After mulling over several ideas she decided on a fashion label, proceeds from which would go towards charity initiatives. Fanaro chose the name Omni Peace and began a series of meetings, proposals and fund raising. Two years later she found herself days away from formally launching her line and transforming her dream into reality.

Then she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer.

Mary Fanaro, flanked by friends Aniston, Crow and Cox above, was right at the finish line.

Doctors ordered the entrepreneur to begin chemo therapy immediately. Yet, instead of shelving her plans, she struck a bargain: a few more days to complete the launch and she'd begin treatment. They agreed and Fanaro flew off to New York to meet with buyers and boutiques then back to Los Angeles to do the same. What followed next for Fanaro was a simultaneous struggle to keep herself and her vision alive.

She won.

Five years later, the L.A based social entrepreneur is flourishing, and so is Omni Peace. In the time since, Fanaro has transformed it from a little known t-shirt line to a buzzed about brand spotted on fans like Lindsay Lohan and Naomi Campbell. Her pieces are available online and nationwide at specialty boutiques. Along the way Fanaro's good friends, Jennifer Aniston, Courtney Cox and Sheryl Crow have pitched in to lend their celebrity status and support.

Beyond the glam, Omni Peace is actually making an impact. Since launching the label has raised over half a million dollars to help women and children in Africa with an emphasis on Congo and Senegal. Her story answers perfectly the question she poses to others on her website: does fashion save lives? It seems to have saved hers.

I caught up with the her to chat about her inspiration, her hurdles and her triumph.

The website mentions watching Live8 as an inspiration for starting OmniPeace. Can you tell us a little bit about that moment?
I was inspired by the magnitude of people coming together through music to relieve African debt. I thought it was a cool way to bring attention to the matter through a vehicle that everyone could relate to. But to be honest, at the time, my first thought wasn't to use fashion as a vehicle to send a message but rather food and chocolate bars; "Peace of Chocolate" specifically was what the bars were going to be called. It was only through a series of mistakes (or rather what I now know were fortuitous events) that led to me sending my message through fashion rather than chocolate.

What were some of the things you saw while visiting Africa? How did it shape your vision for OmniPeace?
I was on safari in Tanzania and was taken to some villages and saw naked, hungry children coming out of huts that weren't fit for an animal live in much less an entire family. But yet there was something about these children and people that made me feel like they knew and felt something I didn't and I wanted to understand what that was. I initially wanted to get my family involved, Archer Daniels Midland (founded by my grandfather Albert Andreas) and I flew to the ADM plant in Decatur, Illinois to pitch them an idea that would enlist their help, but the bureaucracy of it all was far too complicated to address or wait around for, so I decided that when you want to get something done, you have to do it yourself...so I did.

Senegal and Congo have been singled out for aid in your foundation. How did you settle on those countries and why?
The school I built in Senegal was through an organization called buildOn. Since I wanted to build the first OmniPeace school in a Millennium Promise Village (founded by Dr. Jeffery Sachs) they only had people on the ground in Senegal at that time so that location was pretty much my only option. The second OmniPeace school will be in Malawi next month/November. My interest in Congo is because I am partners with UNICEF and V-Day to build the City of Joy - a healing a learning center for Congolese women and girls who have been victims of brutal rape and violence.

At any point were you overwhelmed by the immense mission you outlined for yourself?
Never.

I find it remarkable that you didn't just give up and withdraw when you were diagnosed with cancer. Where did you find the strength? What kept you going in those times?
The strength came from the people whose lives I was helping to improve...they didn't have choices or a voice or the wherewithal to better their lives like I did...in a strange way it actually made me very grateful during my journey with cancer...it was hard to say "why me" comparatively speaking. What kept me going was the fact that I had everything they didn't; health care, doctors, clean drinking water, an environment of love and support and a home.

What other innovative ways do you plan on raising funds and awareness for Omnipeace's mission in 2010?
We will be releasing a video shortly to draw attention to the purchase of "conflict minerals" by some of the biggest tech companies in the world which is fueling the violence in the Congo.

The tagline for OmniPeace, "Can Fashion Save Lives?" is very powerful. Do you think it saved yours? And why? Absolutely. Because I came up with the idea for OmniPeace long before I got diagnosed and it became abundantly clear to me that the idea was not only a divine intervention to save my own life but the lives of others I would be fortunate enough to touch.
Yes, these ladies have the help of makeup artists, personal chefs and probably trainers, and in some cases maybe even Hollywood's best plastic surgeons, but their ages may still surprise you. Who has best stopped the clock and looks better than ever? You decide.

So, Carrie Prejean is having a bit of week, isn't she?

I mean, one week you're the darling of the conservative movement, and the next thing you know, you're being called a hypocrite as your image as a high-falutin' blonde ball of judgment stops meshing with the low-falutin' images you sent your boyfriend five years ago.

Right now, there are a lot of people doing an endzone dance over Prejean's misfortune.

Luckily, she's apparently an actual blonde (sorry. Easy joke) and doesn't seem bright enough to navigate the Mark Sanford-esque minefield she's laid out for herself. On CNN she made the case that it wasn't a sex tape because she was by herself. What is that - the "I tried it but did not inhale" defense for pornography?

But there she is, on all the shows, screaming conspiracy, as though liberals travelled back in time and put the camera on the tripod. Honestly, if liberals had a time machine, they'd go back in time and try to take out Glenn Beck, like the Terminator robots went after John Connor. This mess is ALLLLL you, kiddo.

And I see a pattern.

Levi Johnston is doing Playgirl while suing for custody of his kid. Classy.

Chris Brown releases a statement after Rihanna talks about the abuse.

Jon Gosselin keeps wearing Ed Hardy jerk-wear, dating out of a dumpster, and whines that he can't get his life back on track.

Jennifer Aniston keeps wanting you to know she's found love.

And even as we speak, Sarah Palin is doing something ill-conceived and self-destructive to the Republican party. Keep it up! You're doing great!

And I think: Whatever happened to people shutting up and going away for a little bit? To taking a step back, licking your wounds looking at what went wrong?

Chris Brown has a statement? Are you kidding me? Chris Brown?!? The only thing anybody wants to hear from him right now is "Sorry" and then "Hey, It's 2016 ...can I come out now?" And then, most of us would like to see him punched back into obscurity for a few more years.

Ladies. Dudes. Go away a little bit. Take a trip. Hide in your basement. Live with your mother. Burn your "Affliction shirts," you look ridiculous. Make some smart decisions.

Give the public some time to either remember you fondly, like they do Bill Clinton - or be able to laugh warmly at you as a moment in time, like we do M.C. Hammer and his big goofy pants.

How can we stop being sick of you if you won't go away?

Jennifer Aniston took the stage Monday night to sing 'Yellow Submarine' as part of the 9th Annual 24-Hour Plays on Broadway--a series of six 10-minute plays in which the actors don't get to see the scripts until 12 hours before the curtain. Aniston, 40, shared the stage with Ashton Kutcher, his wife and self-proclaimed 'Puma' Demi Moore, 46, and Brooke Shields, 44.

The cast celebrated at an after-party held at Crest Lounge's Opera Ballroom in NYC.
Mark Joseph: Dumb Things Celebrites Say: Ashton Kutcher

Although it's not fair to only pick on Ashton Kutcher since hundreds of celebs have said the same thing, here goes: In a recent interview, the actor was asked if jealousy ever arose on either his or Demi Moore's part over love scenes they have starred in.

Kutcher's response?

It's interesting that people look at sex in that way. If I had a scene in a movie where I had to go shoot someone with a gun, Demi wouldn't think that I was a murderer. So if I have a scene in a movie where I'm having sex with somebody else, Demi doesn't think that I'm in another relationship. You go to work and you play make-believe, and you come home and you live real life. That's part of our jobs.

Sex with a beautiful co-star is like shooting a gun? Really?

Mayo Method isn't that stupid. She was happily (presumably) married to 45-year old Humphrey Bogart when her husband co-starred with 19-year old Lauren Bacall in To Have & Have Not, in 1944. The next year they weren't married anymore and Bogart wed Bacall.

More recently, Brad Pitt, married at the time to one of the world's most beautiful women, Jennifer Aniston, fell in love with his co-star Angelina Jolie after one of those cold, mechanical, love scenes that Kutcher likens to gunplay.

I could go on -- Hollywood history is replete with such examples, but Kutcher is ignorant of all of that and lives in a reality-free zone wherein human beings are unemotional creatures who can perform sex scenes without any emotional attachment.

Jennifer Aniston burst into tears in her trailer while filming in New York -- telling an assistant that a scene "reminded her of Brad Pitt," a source said.

The unlucky-in-love actress was late coming out of her trailer while filming "The Bounty" with Gerard Butler a few weeks ago. The source tells Page Six that when an assistant went to fetch Aniston, she was in tears, and said, "I need a moment. This scene reminds me of Brad and me."

        Movies Flop

Love Happens is a movie supposedly starring Jennifer Aniston. The problem is Jennifer is MIA in the film. She is barely seen on screen while Aaron Eckhart's character gets most of the scenes and is certainly the focus of the film. Heck Dan Fogler, who plays Eckhart's sidekick, is seen more than Jennifer. This makes Aniston fans very unhappy. Oh and the movie is terrible too.

Burke Ryan (Eckhart) is a self help guru. He tours the country promoting his new book and holding seminars to help people get over grief. One day he arrives in Seattle. He is not happy to be here but his manager Lane (Fogler) has booked him there. We know by the pained expression in Ryan's eyes that something bad happened to him in this city.

Turns out his wife died there and Ryan is not yet over her death even though it has been three years and he tells everyone at his seminars he has. She was killed in a car wreck and he still grieves for her. So when he meets pretty, perky Eloise (Aniston), who is a florist, he is not ready for a relationship

The rest of the movie deals with Ryan coming to terms with his grief and anger. Eloise is mostly an observer from the sidelines. Every once in a while she utters some words of wisdom but not many.

Eckhart has some good moments as Ryan but his character never really connects with Jennifer's. It is like they are appearing in two separate movies. Aniston is still in "Rachel" from Friends mode and is cute, cuddly and wears nice clothes. The best acting in the film is by John Carroll Lynch who plays a man trying to get over the death of his son. He actually seems to be having real grief problems.

Fogler is annoying in the movie and Martin Sheen is embarrassing. Let's not talk about his role as Ryan's father in law. They could have left this character out and the movie would have been just as good, which is pretty bad.

After you leave the theater you realize that nothing in the movie made any sense. It all falls apart in retrospect. Maybe if they had let us see more of Jennifer Aniston it wouldn't have mattered so much but they didn't.

The film is rated PG-13 for profanity and adult situations.

How Jennifer Aniston let herself get talked into this hokey movie is a mystery and a half. The plot is lousy and she isn't seen very much at all. It is just Eckhart and his unendurable grief. By the time I left the theater I was grieving, over the time I wasted and the lack of Aniston in the film.

I scored "Love Happens" a happenstance 4 out of 10.

"Us Weekly" and "InTouch" seemed to have decided Jen will be their perpetual cover girl until she marries, dies, or a combination of the two. The forecast was bright at the box-office for "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs," which earned $30.1 million to lead this weekend's films.

Sony's 3-D animated family comedy was adapted from the popular 1978 children's book by Judi and Ron Barrett. Despite schools being back in session, the film still was able to draw kids and their parents to the multiplexes.

Jennifer Aniston sang "I've Got A Crush On You" on "Ellen" Wednesday.

Aniston recently announced she will sing in an upcoming movie "Goree Girls," based on the real-life story of a 1940's Texas country band made up of female prisoners.

Aniston at first refused, and then tried to get Ellen (future "American Idol" judge) to duet, before warbling out a verse.
Jennifer Aniston showed up at the LA premiere of her new movie 'Love Happens' Tuesday night wearing a short silver dress and silver heels. In the movie, which opens Friday, Aniston plays a florist who is drawn to a widowed self-help guru played by Aaron Eckhart. She was also on Conan (scroll below photos for that).

Later that night she appeared on Conan and talked about opening a Mexican restaurant in New York because "I love Mexican food and usually a really great night is had inside a Mexican restaurant." She also said she would "guest waitress" there once in a while.
Every week she gets dumped again by some new guy and blabs about it all over the magazines.

This has turned her into the biggest star in the nation (I may not be current with my 'biggest' numbers, but she's up there).

What is the attraction of this patheticness?

Is America a nation of dumped and unrequited women? Is the common experience the failed relationship? The recalcitrant man? Yes, obviously.

Still, it's an unexpected message: Life is a disappointment, the chances for happiness recede, nobody is getting any younger. The girl next door is now revealed to be an existential character. The saccharine is bitter.

And this is big box office: Marketers and philosophers pay attention.

Curiously, she is not, unlike so many, a celebrity who people wish a pox upon. People seem to wish Jen well. You'd think that after so many failures and letdowns and glum magazine interviews, people would begin to turn away. And it doesn't even seem to be the case that people (well, women) are yet urging her on, believing in the next time. Quite the opposite. The subtext is that this is never going to happen for her.
Richard Laermer: Why Gossip Matters So Much It Hurts

To get an idea of how strange today's gossip scene is we need to look at the history of gossiping. There is no beginning to speak of. We assume that buzzing about others is one of those immutable truisms of the human condition: people talk about other people for the sake of talking about other people.

The English word gossip originated as godsibb, meaning "a person related to one in God," or a godparent. Until the 1800s, actually, gossip denoted friendship. Today gossip is defined by the dictionary as chatty talk or the reporting of sensational or intimate information.

The Puritans punished gossip in extreme ways, often dragging convicted gossipers through town and inviting townsfolk to point and call names. (They were pretty big on public humiliation.) These people had a habit of confining gossiping women to chairs and unceremoniously dunking them in cold water.

Always a useful tool in American politics, gossip nearly tore apart the Union in the 1830s. President Andrew Jackson appointed John Eaton his Secretary of War. Political enemies of Jackson spread the rumor that Eaton's second wife had been pregnant with Eaton's child before her first husband was out of the picture. Advocates of nullification -- the belief that the states have the power to ignore federal laws regulating their activity -- used the incident as "proof" that Jackson was accepting of immoral ideas and was therefore an ineffective leader. The nullifiers gained momentum from this "scandal" and Eaton was forced to resign.

No one is sure which magazine was the first regular "rag" in the U.S., but the consensus is that 1916's Broadway Brevities & Society Gossip was a pioneer. That weekly covered the "A-listers" of the day -- back then, the famed Broadway set. Just like today, outing closeted gay public figures was a popular, effervescent activity.

In 1938, B-level actress Hedda Hopper began writing a regular column in Hollywood. She was perhaps the first to use her perch to consciously scare objects of her wrath, even naming her home "The House That Fear Built." Hopper really made a name for herself when she printed the names of suspected communists during the blacklisting days. Hopper was not at all liked by the movie stars. In fact, after spreading rumors that actor Michael Wilding was gay, Wilding sued her for libel and won.

And yes, he was gay.

Liz Smith was the first notable gossip columnist to be a properly trained journalist. Smith earned her Journalism degree from UT Austin in 1949. After graduating, she worked on Mike Wallace's staff before becoming a ghostwriter on one of Hearst Newspapers' syndicated columns. Smith today continues to be one of the most respected (is that possible?) gossipers in America. Her work appears exclusively on Joni Evans' www.wowOwow.com and the fact she still publishes amazes, since her last few years as a columnist for the Post had crazy errors in them. Today she babbles on about her anger toward "first night" reviewers no longer being allowed to vote in the Tony Awards. It's a little unseemly.

Gossip is now the province of the shouters on the Web. Leading the charge are TMZ.com (a favorite of mine because of a double-shot of loud and proud) and silly cartoon character Perez Hilton, who was one of the first gossip guys to gain favor of celebrities instead of ire. Perez is funny but he takes himself a bunch too seriously -- and picking on Demi Moore's kid was dumb. Plus he wasn't very good on Degrassi Goes Hollywood. Also, he is about to start a company paid to Tweet under his name. (That's a big shrug.)

The problem with TMZ on TV is that much of the talent giggling over the papp shots don't know much about history. One day the kids saw Liam Neeson walking with a guy they called "Ralph Feens." Had no idea who it was. Then there was the time they cheerfully chatted about Roma Downey "coming to party" after she hadn't been out for a while. That party was at Mark Burnett's house. Oh, that's Burnett's WIFE!

"Ralph Feens"
Where gossip of yesterday served as a kind of satisfaction of the public's desire for knowledge, today it has only a purpose that is trivial at best: to sell media while granting the "now famous" a chance to get their names water-coolered. This is all one great effort to make us think what they did was accidental. In other words, the gossip media treat us like idiots.

Michael Jackson proved that to stay a star you got to have people gabbing about you. The fact that it quenches the thirst of Americans to read "dirt" is not the aim of the industry these days. This is simply a lot of collusion on the part of desperate grabbers-on. And now, as dessert, I would like to proffer examples of unreal gossip, or stories that effect nothing except to transport the famous:

David Beckham Turning His Back on England: Great gossip and nothing based in fact. All conclusions drawn from tenuous (at best) innuendo based completely on photographs. David Beckham is not turning his back on England. He is wearing a Yankees hat. The purpose of this particular nugget: print pictures of a mostly naked Becks. He gets more famous, TMZ sells more ads. Are you happy?

Bill and Hillary Actually Like Each Other: This "story" (really picture and caption) isn't quite like all the rest. Sure, some of the media still seems transfixed by Bubba's every breath but the Clintons aren't the media figures that they were even five years ago. So why is this here? First, you have to admit that it is a little bit surprising that these two do like each other enough to hold hands. Mostly it is a space filler. The Secretary of State and a former president do not need publicity. Not anymore. They're fine.

The Tucker Max Movie Will Be Funny: First, let me assure you this movie will not make you laugh since he is all the adjectives for disgusting. This is perfect gossip because it says nothing AND draws a conclusion. There's no news yet it gets prominent placement. How's that work? Ask the producer or director or star of a film whether that film is going to be good. The answer you get is "Yes"! Right. It's like last week when Nicole Kidman said her "next movie is my first passion project." The others were -- ambivalent projects?

The Grey's Anatomy Sex Tape: In this case, a B-list TV actor whose sexual antics with his wife and a stranger (no sex, just playfulness) was leaked by the roommate of the third party, a deranged former country star who also needs ink. The purpose here is to make a guy from Grey's Anatomy more known since his steaminess is not as apparent. No one was shocked to see a guy like Dane in the sack with others, nor that it was recorded. People want to see other people (especially good-looking types) naked so the rags include all skin shots if it's a boldface name. Some money for publications covering it, and a scandal that Dane will be known for. He has a tag.

Lastly, I turn my gaze on Jenny (Please Look At Me) Aniston. She's a corporate concoction if ever there was one (pretty; does what she's told). Her movies follow the life story created for her -- The Breakup after a loud split from a perfect husband; and now The Baster while she is talking up single motherhood. Fact is there are a lot of people making an awful lot of money off the career of a friend. A star who wants to remain "in the pack" plays her part guilefully.

Imagine how funny in retrospect: Jennifer Aniston is being called the lonely girl in the mass media. You're telling me that someone good-looking and famous in LA is unable to get Guys Lining Up (GLU)? She has been "linked" (quotes mine) to so many men but it is no coincidence they all happen to be Bradley Cooperesque, or boring, with nothing to say, and a need to have their notoriety staged.

With Jen (except for Brad, who I'm pretty certain she lived with), it's all guilt by PR. In reality she hooks up with everyone -- handymen, pool guys, local bartenders -- but whether she did more than handshake peers like John Mayer or Vince Vaughn is between you and your imagination. Mayer and Butler and Vaughn are handy single men to have around when the cameras snap.

When Aniston complains about seeking love, women in relationships feel good about those regular guys keeping them safe at home. It's therapy through the cover stories. Now, if only Aniston would sign on for a movie worth running to instead of non-starters like Love Matters, this would in fact be a public service.
Jennifer Aniston is promoting her upcoming "Love Happens" with an interview in the October issue of Harper's Bazaar in which she proclaims, "I'm still a romantic."

The ex-wife of Brad Pitt, ex-girlfriend of Vince Vaughn and more recently of John Mayer tells the magazine that she knows what makes a relationship fail.

"I think it's laziness," she says. "I think a good relationship is about collaboration. I think you just need to talk to each other. Say what you need. Say what you want. That way it's not threatening. You just need to say, 'This is important to me.' Don't expect your mate to read your mind."

She also puts some blame on women who don't expect enough of their men from the beginning.

"I think that's because it's just instinctual as a woman to be the caretaker of your home. Women complain that men don't do enough, but it's your own fault," she said. "You train your man to do nothing. You can't blame someone for not knowing what his or her job should be if you don't ask for it right off the bat."

But don't think she's still hung up on any of her exes.

"I think it's important to have closure in any relationship that ends - from a romantic relationship to a friendship. You should always have a sense of clarity at the end and know why it began and why it ended. You need that in your life to move cleanly into your next phase," she said.

Kate Gosselin is striking back against Jon - and Octomom Nadya Suleman. Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie are fighting while Brad's ex-wife Jennifer Aniston is revealing her slim body secrets. John Travolta continues to grieve for his son Jett. Plus, Kourtney Kardashian and Kendra Baskett share a cover.

Let's take a closer look!

Nadya Suleman says Kate Gosselin is "desperate for attention" and labels her a reality show fake, according the new issue of In Touch Weekly. (Pot meet kettle!) The larger question is who is the bigger reality star monster? That's a tough question!

Kate Gosselin strikes back - again (and again, and again!). Looking fresh-faced on the cover of People Magazine, Kate dishes about her soon-to-be ex-husband Jon Gosselin. She's mortified about his affair with Hailey and compares Jon to a 15-year-old. Do readers still care what Kate has to say about her crumbling marriage?

Meanwhile, Angelina Jolie told Brad to go sleep on the couch, according to the new issue of OK! Magazine.* This latest dispute went down in the South of France during the couple's summer vacation. Angie is fed up with Brad's drinking, partying and even Brad's embarrassing weight gain. Can the couple get past this latest rift?

Us Weekly covers E!'s pregnant reality stars Kendra Baskett and Kourtney Kardashian, and reveals everything about their pregnancies. The tab features the basics on the cover, e.g. cravings, mood swings, as well as Kourtney's rocky relationship with Scott Disick. But the gem on this cover is this line: Kendra & Kourtney's "fears about breast-feeding with breast implants." That's a cover first!

In other news, John Travolta is living without wife Kelly Preston, according to Star Magazine. The actor appears to be still grieving from the shocking death of his son Jett. He's spending days alone in bed, cries watching videos of Jett and takes solo trips to Denny's at 3 in the morning. This is one sad story.

Finally, Jennifer Aniston lost 5lbs in 5 days, according to Life & Style Weekly**. Not only did she lose weight - Ms. Aniston now has "perky boobs, a tight butt and a flat belly." Inside the tab, you'll discover her tricks for her steamy bod as well as landing a new man.
