Each release was either a bloated, masturbatory "meh" (Gaga, Timberlake), a bland retread aimed squarely at third graders (Perry), or a bafflingly mixed bag of roaring promise and faux-controversial poppycock (The fair Cyrus bird).
With Lady Gaga's new album ARTPOP, she continues to try to shock but it all somehow falls flat. In an age when Miley Cyrus and Nikki Minaj parade around in next to nothing, Lady Gaga's brand of "shocking" seems almost dated.
I get a little melancholy about how I miss the warmth of analog, the crackle of the 33, the days before autotune, when singers had to be able to actually sing, by golly. And I thank God that Barbra Streisand and Celine Dion didn't have to twerk.
