The Kenosha County DA said Jacob Albright died by suicide after he shot himself in the head in the back of a police squad car with his own gun.
Video of the incident shows police repeatedly punching the man on or near his head as he lay on the floor while another officer restrained him.
The child's father filed a federal lawsuit alleging "unreasonable and unlawful use of force" following last year's incident in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
The acquitted Kenosha shooter said he'd once rooted for the Lakers star.

Kyle Rittenhouse "didn't deserve to walk free," the Wisconsin State Journal declared in an editorial.
Kyle Rittenhouse, an Illinois teen, walked free on Friday after killing two people and injuring a third with a high-powered rifle last summer.
"Different scenarios run through your head ... like what could have happened, like what if I wasn’t alive?” Rittenhouse said in a Fox News clip.
Rep. Paul Gosar, meanwhile, asked if Rittenhouse should get a "congressional Medal of Honor" after the teenager, who killed two people, was found not guilty.
"Armed civilians can show up in any town, incite violence, and then use the danger they have created to justify shooting people in the street," the parents of one victim warned.
Jurors delivered the verdict after several days of deliberations. Rittenhouse shot three people, killing two, at a protest in Wisconsin last year.
