The film doesn't try to put a copycat "urban" tag on the proceedings, but instead tells an interesting story free of Hollywood's often narrow depictions of African-Americans.

For Colored Girls is not only for colored girls because it offers a pathway to self-growth, finding our authentic power, and discovering the divine in one's self.

Saying that For Colored Girls is the most disciplined, least clownish film that Tyler Perry has made -- his best film to date -- is faint praise indeed. And that's how it's meant.

For Colored Girls is not my favorite Tyler Perry film, but I recommend you see for yourself. Although I hoped for something better, it was refreshing to watch an ensemble of talented black actresses in non-demeaning roles.
