Taylor Swift on cloud 9 after 6 AMA nods

AP | CAITLIN R. KING | Posted 05.25.2011 | Home

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Taylor Swift says she is "absolutely walking on a cloud" over her six nominations for the American Music Awards.

"I've never been nominated six times for any award show," the country star said Tuesday before a benefit concert in Nashville. "This is just such a wonderful day for me."

Her tally, announced on Oct. 13, even beat late superstar Michael Jackson, with five nods and rapper Eminem, with four.

"It's the 13th today, and 13 is my lucky number, and that's when I found out about the AMAs. It's like, I swear, good things happen on the 13th for me, and I can't believe all those nominations."

The 19-year-old is up for the AMA's big award, artist of the year, alongside Jackson, Lady Gaga, Eminem, and rock band Kings of Leon.

Mudslide menace eases in Calif. as storm weakens

AP | SOLVEJ SCHOU and RAQUEL MARIA DILLON | Posted 05.25.2011 | Home

LA CANADA FLINTRIDGE, Calif. — A powerful fall storm packing strong winds and rain eased Wednesday without causing the widespread mudslides and debris flows that California residents had feared.

The storm delivered its biggest punch to northern and central areas, knocking out power to nearly 700,000 utility customers from Bakersfield in the southern San Joaquin Valley to Eureka on the north coast.

A mandatory evacuation order remained in effect for residents of about 40 homes in central coast mountains near Watsonville, east of Monterey Bay, due to mudslides, said Chris Hirsch, a spokeswoman for Santa Cruz County emergency services.

A house in Corralitos was left surrounded by mud that buried cars up to their windows and a basketball hoop up to the net.

A dozen other homes were isolated because fallen trees and debris blocked roads.

Calif. storm causes power outages, mudslide fears

AP | SOLVEJ SCHOU and RAQUEL MARIA DILLON | Posted 05.25.2011 | Home

LOS ANGELES — Residents across California worried Tuesday about possible flash floods and mudslides as a storm began showering areas devastated by wildfires.

Sandbagging and other preparations were being made in neighborhoods under threat, including Santa Barbara County and the Los Angeles-area foothills. The rains began before dawn across much of the state but were expected to intensify in the evening and into Wednesday.

"It's something we prepare for every year," Los Angeles County fire Inspector Frederic Stowers said. "We know the fires go through and do a lot of damage. Within L.A. County, much of the slopes burned are going to be critical."

People living around burn areas near the 250-square-mile Station Fire in Angeles National Forest were warned to brace for possible flows of mud, ash and debris with rainfall of up to 4 inches. Los Angeles County's average rainfall for October is less than half an inch.

The Pacific storm was expected to drop 3 to 6 inches of rain in Santa Barbara County, where an 8,700-acre fire burned in May, before it moves on to the San Gabriel Mountains, where the U.S. Geological Survey recently warned of massive debris flows near the areas burned in September.

Witness details multiple prescriptions for Smith

AP | LINDA DEUTSCH | Posted 05.25.2011 | Home

LOS ANGELES — A witness has testified that Anna Nicole Smith's psychiatrist was prescribing excessive medication at a time when other doctors were giving the former Playboy model opiates and other drugs.

Dr. Timothy Botello, an expert in psychiatry, testified Monday at a preliminary hearing for three defendants accused of illegally giving Smith drugs.

Botello documented prescriptions written from 2003 to 2007, when Smith died of an accidental drug overdose at a Florida hotel.

He focused on one month in 2004 when Dr. Khristine Eroshevich, Smith's psychiatrist, and Dr. Sandeep Kapoor were giving her medications from various pharmacies.

Eroshevich, Kapoor and Smith's former boyfriend-lawyer Howard K. Stern are charged with conspiring to illegally provide Smith with controlled substances. All have pleaded not guilty.

Angels' Lackey to start ALCS Game 1

AP | Posted 05.25.2011 | Home

ANAHEIM, Calif. — John Lackey will start Friday night's Game 1 of the AL championship series against CC Sabathia and the Yankees, getting the nod from manager Mike Scioscia before the Angels traveled to New York on Wednesday.

Lackey pitched 7 1-3 innings to lead Los Angeles to a 5-0 win over the Boston Red Sox in Game 1 of the division series. The right-hander is 3-3 with a 3.02 ERA in 12 career postseason games, 10 starts.

"It's a fun atmosphere, for sure," Lackey said. "It's the same as the last round. It helps to win the first game, but the importance is probably a little bit less in a seven-game series, especially being on the road. It'll be a challenge the whole series. They're a great team."

Lackey was 11-8 with a 3.83 ERA after missing the first 33 games because of a forearm strain. He got Los Angeles off to a great start in the first round of the playoffs, allowing just four singles against Boston.

"When John is on that mound, he competes as well as anybody I've seen," Scioscia said of the eight-year veteran, who won Game 7 of the 2002 World Series as a rookie.
