Olympic gymnastics great Mary Lou Retton told Today she had a rare form of pneumonia in which doctors weren’t sure whether she would survive.
“We are overwhelmed with the love and support from everyone,” the famed gymnast's daughter said Monday.
The former gymnast's recovery from pneumonia took an unexpected downturn this week, daughter Shayla Schrepfer shared on Instagram.
The retired gymnast's recovery "is steadily progressing" and she is responding to pneumonia treatment, according to an update shared on Instagram.
Retton was the first American woman to win an individual all-around Olympic gold medal.
The Olympic gymnast and Shannon Kelley made their split final in February, she said.
