RALEIGH, N.C. — Premier Inc., a health care purchasing and data company, announced Wednesday it's moving its headquarters from California to Charlotte while increasing its work in North Carolina's largest city by 300 jobs.
A state economic incentives panel approved an agreement with Premier that could pay the company $4.1 million over the next nine years if it creates the jobs over the next five, keeps them through 2018 and meets investment targets.
Premier, with 750 of its 1,250 workers already based out of Charlotte, will shift its headquarters from San Diego to Charlotte in part because many executive team members and its three divisions already are there, company spokesman Alven Weil said.
The new jobs will be created due to the company's growth and aren't being transferred to Charlotte from San Diego, Weil said.
Premier is owned by more than 200 not-for-profit hospitals and health care systems that share clinical information and leverage purchasing on everything from syringes to imaging equipment to reduce costs. The alliance works with more than 2,200 hospitals and 63,000 health care providers.

SAN DIEGO — The Chargers released starting strong safety Clinton Hart on Wednesday in order to sign defensive tackle Ian Scott.
The Chargers need depth on the defensive line due to the loss of tackle Jamal Williams, out for the season with a triceps injury.
Hart joined the Chargers in 2004 and has been a starting safety since 2007.
Scott, a seven-year veteran, joined the Chargers last September and appeared in four games. He was released at the conclusion of training camp.
In their last game, the Chargers fell behind Pittsburgh 28-0 before losing 38-28. The Chargers allowed 497 yards of offense.

An investigator says federal agents felt trapped when they fired guns at a van packed with suspected illegal immigrants at the nation's busiest border crossing.
San Diego police Lt. Kevin Rooney said Wednesday that the agents were on foot and didn't have an area where they felt they could flee as two vans sped straight at them.
Four people were injured Tuesday after drivers of three vans attempted to storm past inspectors at the San Ysidro port of entry connecting San Diego and Tijuana, Mexico. Two were struck by gunfire, and two others were hurt when one of the vans hit a truck. Rooney says none of the injuries was life-threatening.
Authorities say two drivers were arrested and expected to be charged with smuggling. Another driver fled to Mexico, where he was captured, and will be prosecuted there.
