Whether it be for actions taken by the EPA or the State Department, congratulations to the Obama Administration are due for leadership on both carbon emissions and marine conservation. Let these efforts be the first of many.
As a scientist, I applaud the mayor for trying to protect New Yorkers from climate chaos. But who's looking out for the rest of America? It's hard to understand why President Obama isn't responding to the climate crisis with the same urgency displayed by the leader of our largest city.
On Monday, October 29, Scott Falk was worried. He had made all necessary preparations for Hurricane Sandy as his building was designated a Zone A evacuation site. But it wasn't high tide as yet and already the storm surge had caused the FDR to flood.
We need a new indicator of likely flood damage, which would have to take into account the economic value of property in the track of the hurricane, the sea level of the land, and the size of the expected surge.
