Politiku for Mother's Day
The impact that our mothers' feelings, ideas, ideals, experiences and activities have on us is difficult to grasp. What is clear, however, is that our mothers' politics influence our political identity

McCain is going with Joe the Plumber as the advertising centerpiece of his campaign and absent some fantastic new character attack against Obama, it's his best shot left at an economic message.

The Bill Ayers issue underscores just how out of touch John McCain is with the country he seeks to lead. It is also, for many Americans, just another way for John McCain to tell us he is old.

I carry my share of misery, but a fair number of reactionaries must have ceaseless raging fear in their heads. Isn't real life awful enough? Why the need for even worse alternate realities?

Why am I not surprised that Ayers, master of publicity is once more making front page headlines. I'm betting he's thrilled.

Sarah Palin has been out there saying Obama is friends with Ayers, "a domestic terrorist." In response, Obama has accurately pointed out that Ayers committed his actions over forty years ago, when Obama was eight years old.

Whatever you believe about Bill Ayers and the Weathermen, the fact remains that he is not running for president. But John McCain doesn't really have any other arrows left in his quiver.

Governor, you have a "close association" with a known former member of a radical, right-wing, well-armed and well-funded political party whose founder damned the United States as virulently as Reverend Wright did.

Kennedy's death came when the world was on the cusp of transformation -- between authoritarian societies and social and political justice. Much of that change was stalled in the US for decades to come.

It's one thing to recognize that the idealism of social movements has to be complemented by a tough realism in contests for political power. It's another to celebrate brawling.

The mainstream media seems intent on confirming that it has so internalized the Right's framing and messages they have now become part of its DNA. The first of the latest round of exhibits proving this was offered into evidence during last week's ABC debate. This was followed by the New York Times' epic revelation of the unseemly complicity between the Pentagon and the media in delivering the Bush administration's talking points on Iraq via "a kind of Trojan media horse" -- Pentagon-approved, prepped, and financially-enriched "military analysts" dutifully parroting the Bush party line, with nary a raised eyebrow from the TV stations and newspapers offering these highly-decorated sock puppets their prestigious platforms. And it's not just the media. Witness Hillary Clinton repeating the Rove-promoted lie that MoveOn was against intervention in Afghanistan after 9/11.

What someone did forty years ago should not damn them forever. But that's assuming the offending individual pays their debt to society and repents. Bill Ayers has done neither.

Charlie Gibson was unctuous and petty and wrong. If Americans needed more proof that the media elite are rich and out of touch, Gibson gave them more.
