With the 2017 guide, Tokyo lays claim to 227 Michelin-starred restaurants

With the release of the 2017 Michelin Guide, Tokyo continues its domination as one of the leading food capitals of the world. Ten additional restaurants in the city gained stars this year, bringing its total number of Michelin-starred restaurants to a staggering 227--more than any other city in the world. Even more remarkable? This is the 10th year in a row Tokyo has held this coveted position, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Three-star restaurants on the list include Joël Robuchon's Tokyo outpost and Sukiyabashi Jiro Honten, the subject of the Jiro Dreams of Sushi documentary. Not every Michelin-starred meal is expensive, however. One-star restaurants include the likes of Tsuta, whose bowl of ramen sells for a mere $9.

If you want to compare a multicourse kaiseki meal to Olympic gymnastics, at this point, Tokyo is the Simone Biles of the food world. The city taking silver, with the second most stars? Tokyo's neighbor, Osaka, which has 96 Michelin-starred restos. Meanwhile, coming up with the third-place bronze is beloved culinary landmark Paris, which has 92 Michelin-starred restaurants. Until next year, of course, when the count starts all over again.
