When people find out that I am a child of three divorces, the reaction is varied. Some are sympathetic, but most of the time, it's awkward. One of the most common responses I receive is a cheerful, "Oh, well, at least you'll know what not to do when you get married!" Chuckle, chuckle.

This got me thinking. Parents teach you things like how to ride a bike, not to touch the stove when it's hot, "hugs, not drugs" and a bunch of other well-intentioned (and clichéd) advice. So here is what they taught me from their failed marriages:
