7 Budget-Friendly Substitutes for Europe's Top Cities

How many times have you embarked on a trip with a strict budget? You book your flight with miles, plan your itinerary ahead to avoid impromptu purchases, and even take your full budget out of the ATM and pay for everything with cash so you know just how much you've spent. Then you watch solemnly as that budget flies right out the window on day two and you've officially entered splurge territory.

The good news is that there are fantastic budget-friendly alternatives to most of Europe's most travel-worthy, but wallet-thinning cities. Can't really afford a Paris jaunt? Why not book a weekend in Montreal? You'll still have the chance to get tripped up by a language barrier, walk cobblestoned streets, and take pictures of the Notre Dame (Basilica). Yearning for the sumptuous cuisine and history of Florence? Spend less by booking a flight for Lisbon instead, where delectable dishes and stunning architecture abound. There is also the added bonus of venturing to a locale not as oft-traveled as its pricier counterpart.

Feel like indulging in the island life? Ibiza is one of the world's best known party spots, but that means peak prices and early bookings unless you spring for nearby Mallorca -- also off the coast of Spain. There may be less techno music, but white-sand beaches, fabulous people watching, and mouth-watering cuisine are all on offer at a fraction of the cost.

Ultimately, nothing can replace the real thing, but just because you've caught the travel bug, don't fret - your budget won't start deteriorating as soon as you take those vacation days. Feel that familiar rush of immersing yourself in a new place, culture, and cuisine in these substitute cities that definitely don't disappoint.

- Nicole Campoy-Leffler, The Daily Meal (Research by Leora Novick)

Notes: All approx. prices are averages based on a search for one week in October and are subject to change.

Restaurants and hotels are all comparable for their respective cities.

Splurge: London

There are more than enough reasons to justify a grand splurge on a trip to London. One of the most dynamic and diverting (and most expensive) cities in Europe, it boasts much-lauded restaurants, fantastic hotels, great weekend markets to stroll through, and buzzed-about shopping. And even though travelers can enter museums and gorgeous parks for free, most of these activities come at a premium. It doesn't help that the British pound is no friend of the American dollar.

Flight from JFK: $800/person
5-star hotel: $375/night
High-end restaurant: $40/entrée;
Single fare subway ride: $3-$6
Exchange rate: $1.50 to 1BPS

If you find Montreal a suitable alternative to Paris, save even bigger bucks by just checking out a "Ratatouille" DVD from your library.

Not sure I put Budapest in a 'save' class. It can be an expensive town. Taxi's are incredibly expensive and it anyone can find a High End Restaurant for 19$, please give me the name.

This article is exactly what's wrong with the American perception of traveling. First of all why does she quote high-end 5 star hotel prices in a "budget travel" article? You could go to any of the places on this list and stay at a hostel for about $20 or even a decent hotel for under $100. And where is she getting her flight prices? It costs more to fly to London ($800! I found a better price in 5 min) than to Budapest? This is a terrible article and further pushes away the all too important act of seeing your country from outside it's borders. Go see the world! It's not that hard, or expensive.

I recently returned from a trip to Italy. I spent several days in Torino (Turin) on a traveling companion's family matter combining the visit there with sightseeing.

It is a very lovely and neglected city with much lower prices than Rome or Florence. Just don't go there looking for ancient, medieval or reneaissance art and architecture - there isn't much. Instead find a city where baroque meets art nouveau and Italy's culture is influenced by both France and Central Europe. Lovely and spectacular baroque churches; an inconic art nouveau observation tower with a cinema museum; easy access to the alps -- which can be seen from the city; and the largest Egyptian museum outside of Cairo.

Dude, Mallorca is not cheap. It's the watering whole for all of Britian and Ireland. There are other, much less expensive Spanish or Portuguese islands.

Turkey is also meant to be brilliant and very cheap. So is Eastern Europe, which isn't scary btw.

Paris is uniquely Paris and Ibiza is very different from Mallorca. Go by all means, but don 't think the experience will be the same. It's like saying a picnic in your living room is just dinner at your favorite restaurant - it can be great but it ain't the same.

That picture is not Tel Aviv, it's whats left of Old Jaffa, Historic Palestine's cultural and economic hub of yonder. At any rate, I'll pass.
07:47 PM on 10/02/2011
The Daily Meal needs a map because Tel Aviv is in the Middle East, even though the population is predominately European. And I must say that at a time when the whole world is boycotting the wretched country, we really should be following suit.

I have been living in Brussels for past three years. Brussels is a decent city but comparing London with brussels is like comparing new york city with pittsburgh. No comparison.

I agree. I found Brussels boring. After a short visit to the Atomium and a little shopping we moved on. But then my brother-in-law thinks it's the most wonderful city in Europe. Go figure.

Sorry you guys don't care for Brussels. I loved it, on the other hand. One of the few cities I've visited that I can see myself living in long-term. Very "homey" feel to it.

If you want cheap, you should do Ljubljana, Budapest, Riga, any major city in Poland, Lisbon, Berlin, Dresden, Istanbul, or Bratislava (though not my favorite).

I would put it this way:

London - Brussels
Paris - Rome (Rome is cheap, and similarly iconic)
Vienna - Budapest (Vienna is stuffy and pricey, Budapest is the opposite)
Madrid - Lisbon (waaay cheaper)
Florence - Dubrovnik/Ljubljana
Prague - Zagreb
St. Petersburg - Riga/Kiev (hard to compete, but similarly Slavic and impressive)
Amsterdam - Hamburg
Moscow - Berlin (both Cold War fortresses, Imperial capitals, lots of history)

Something like that. And this isn't counting cities in other continents -- then you'd have tons of Latin American cities (Quito, Montevideo, Antigua, etc) all over this list, and a few Middle Eastern and Asian ones as well (maybe some South Africa too).

Loved Warsaw. The flea market at the old abandoned soccer stadium was one of the most fascinating places I've ever seen. You can buy anything a Barbie doll to an AK-47. We wanted to take pictures but the people running the booths had strong objections to it. ..Hmmmm.

Sorry, but Prague is more expensive than Berlin. Wasn't like that 10 years ago -- but the Czechs will sadly rip you off at any chance, and if you're a foreigner it's just not that cheap. Still is an amazing place, and worth a visit, but Berlin is much more affordable. (And, I will add, bleaker and more depressing, but has lots of personality).

I traveled around Eastern Europe for two months encountering vibrant, stylish and sophisticated people and cultures, gorgeous art and architecture, stunning natural wonders and great hospitality. I stayed in hostels to cook some of my own meals and meet people, and also couchsurfed. All for $800 a month.

There are so many things you can do in Athens that aren't expensive and yeah, HuffPo, thanks for directing tourists away from Greece and thereby hastening its economic collapse.

'and thereby hastening its economic collapse' - how right you are not. A bit over the top, I think.

Athens? Things to do? After the required visit to the Parthenon and the museums displaying basiclally the same things there is little to do.....Most of the sights in Greece are not in Athens...

I said things to do. Not necessarily sights. Athens has great food. You can go to an outdoor movie theater (a very Greek tradition in summer). You can go for coffee in Kolonaki or some sweets at a number of great sweet shops. Go see Sounio. Go shopping along Ermou. Go see the flea market downtown. See Mars Hill if you like that kind of thing. Catch the urban street artists at various venues. And much more.

You would think that if they are going to give substitutes for European top cities, they would restrain themselves to Europe.

Another badly concocted article.

Yeah, especially since on the front page, they advertise "7 Budget-friendly (or something such) European cities."

This is what happens when one does not pay attention in geography classes. (Do they even have geography classes, still?)

I don't BELIEVE they put Berlin as splurge, that is plain untrue. Berlin is a tremendous bargain, there are tons of fabulous things to do on the cheap. But good, it probably doesn't need more tourists.

Lovin' your movie reference handle, there, Lovely! Really wish I'd been more imaginative, but hey, we were in the hot throes of primary season and all... You're 100% right on Berlin; it seems to have been designed to serve and entertain cheap and nosey tourists like me. Maybe it's a good thing they still don't have a world-class airport! I'll always cherish my piece of the wall that I hacked out myself by renting an ax -- "Ein mark fur ein minuten" in 1990.
