America's Best Drive-Thrus

Like motels and Twinkies, the drive-through window is a distinctly American invention. Sure, other countries have embraced the simple pleasure of ordering a meal without so much as unbuckling your seatbelt, but it was America's mid-20th-century convenience-obsessed car culture that gave birth to this now global phenomenon.

The drive-through's origins are in dispute. Some say it was California's beloved In-and-Out Burger in 1948 that first allowed customers to order from the comfort of their front seat. But the Iowa-based restaurant chain Maid-Rite also claims to have opened the very first drive-through window, in Springfield, Ill. And though the mighty McDonald's wouldn't dare pretend to have invented it, they say their drive-through window has more nobler origins: "The first McDonald's drive-thru was created in 1975 near an Arizona military base -- to serve soldiers who weren't permitted to get out of their cars while wearing fatigues."

No matter its origins, the drive-through window really took off in the 1950s, around the same time as that other eat-in-your-car dining phenom: the drive-in restaurant, a.k.a. the carhop. (Think: waitresses on roller skates delivering burgers and shakes to teenagers on awkward dates.) While the drive-in is now kitsch for nostalgic Baby Boomers, the drive-thru is ubiquitous. Not just at restaurants, either. Banks, of course, have offered drive-through service for decades. You'll also find drive-through liquor stores, drive-through dry cleaners, drive-through wedding chapels, even drive-through funeral homes.

But the coolest drive-thrus still serve food. Many use gimmicks to distinguish themselves from the competition. For instance, at Denver's Hot Chick-a-Latté, for example, the baristas are no simple espresso pullers -- they're young, stylish woman who sling java with a side of sass. In La Puente, Ca., The Donut Hole's customers are treated to a truly drive-through experience: Two giant donuts stand majestically over the drive-through entrance and exit.

What's more convenient than a convenience store? A drive-thru where you can buy fresh meat, milk, or chips and dip. At a time when food trucks are the latest culinary craze (they are, arguably, the drive-through window's polar opposite), the classic drive-thru shows no sign of disappearing. After all -- to borrow from Weird Al Yankovic's "Trapped in the Drive-Thru" -- how else can you order your favorite fast food while wearing a pair of bunny slippers?

The cupcake craze may have garnered some backlash in recent years, but the single-serving desserts are still among Americans' favorite snacks. At the Coffee Pod in Utah, drivers with the munchies can also order cupcakes from local favorite Cupcake Chic.

I predict based on the picture alone being featured that there will be a few new "Donut Hole" franchises being built. I predict one place will be Polaris area of northern Columbus, Ohio. And added to the menu if not already there, lattes and coffees to compete with Starbucks.

I like drive ins. They're fun, if they're presented right. Some A & Ws still do it. There was a place about 30 years ago in Auburn, ME, I think, (or was it Sabattus?) that had car hops in Daisy Dukes and heels. Splendid! And the Sonic thing is a good presentation with sub par food.

But I don't like drive thrus. I don't like sitting there with my engine burning gas at nearly $4 a gallon with the exhaust, (or emissions, as Sarah Palin calls it) from the car in front dumping into my HVAC system. The whole deal is just plain dirty and is a waste of good air. And it puts me off my feed.

My son and his girl friend drove through a car wash during the wind cycle. I think I try that....in my husbands truck of course.

In the late sixties, there were drive through liquor stores in Kansas City, Kansas. They also cashed paychecks. There was always a long line of cars at each one on Friday evening.

I remember a little "convenience" store about 1960 in a suburb south of Atlanta, that had a "car hop" guy that would come out to your car, take your list (milk, cigarettes, coffee, etc) return with the items and bring you back your change. Now it is entirely impersonal unless your frequent a grocery store that can keep its employees and then you get a swift exchange and a "see ya".
It's like monied interests have created a global leper colony or like that song my son used to listen to, "You Got To Keep 'em Separated"....We could find a better response to this undeniable change if we all lived consciously....oh, and did I mention, be happier.

Now we have drive thru's that hand out poison through the windows. I promise you, the little burgers, fries and milkshakes tasted excellent back then! I bet the cows were happier back then before factory farms.
Now, out of self defense, I am a dairy free, vegan and the "proof was in the pudding"....I feel much better.

I'm kinda okay with the 'impersonal' nature of U-scan aisles (where you scan and pay for your items completely cashier free).. Not particularly keen on the cashier knowing that I'm buying condoms, or any number of other personal items. Not that it matters THAT much, but I prefer it being my own thing and not 'our thing'.

Way back I remember when Brew-Thru was primarily a drive-thru for some beer after a long day of surfing on the OB. Those were the days, no mortgage, no wife, no kids, no responsibilities, no worries.

I was married once, had the cute wife, mortgage, smart beautiful kids, etc. and saw some of those 30 somethings without any of that, living the surfer life style, etc. and thinking "yeah, they're having fun, but they don't have this awesome life". Then my wife left me, took the house, etc. and I was forced into the single life style. And to be honest, I see how and why it is far superior to the married life style. It's just when I get older, I'm thinking I'll wish I secured a life long partnership with a nice girl. So, I guess the perfect set up is living care free until you are about 40 or 50, then settle down with someone. Just nothing guarantees you can get that, so better to secure it early.. maybe.

The Donuts Hole is near the corner or Hacienda Blvd. and Amar Rd. And they are never going out business. [Unless nuclear war, or something]

Across the street there is also Snap E Taco, some of the best hard-shell tacos Ever !

I know it well. I grew up in the 60's and 70's in La Puente just a few blocks away and remember when the Donut Hole went up. I also remember Snap E Taco. I would stop by there late at night and get a taco, burrito and tostada. My mom still lives nearby, and when my sister who moved north comes down to visit, he always HAS to stop by for a Snap E Taco fix.

Portillo's in Chicago started out as a tiny hot dog stand in Villa Park. I was in 7th or 8th grade when we discovered it, back in the late 50's so it has a long history with me. They were not far from our house. Nowadays, when I go through their drive thru they have a great grilled Tuna steak sandwich for around $4. Great American success story!

Could you have selected a less appetizing photo to represent non-animal food? Manufactured white wafers? How about, I don't know, spaghetti in tomato sauce? Mashed potatoes with a savory mushroom sauce? I eat meat, but cooking without meat isn't an alien concept to me, either.

They forgot the most important drive through. In Texas we have drive through liquor stores. You can buy all the liquor you want without leaving the comfort of the drivers seat.
