Accusations are flying this morning that conservatives have found a way to cheat the Dancing With the Stars voting system in order to keep Bristol Palin on the show. (You only have to click over to coverage of last night's results show to see just how worked up commenters are about the alleged rigging.)

Now, I'll be the first to point out that there seems to be some sort of Operation Shady Business with respect to last night's voting (more on that later), but what I'm not buying about the situation is that the Tea Party is behind it: What is there to possibly gain from having the daughter of a Tea Party hero win some crappy reality show?

(Now, before DWTS fans call for my head on a stick, I'd just like to say that while I think the show is sub-par, I do not think people who watch the show are sub-par. I'm simply reacting to the fact that whenever I've watched the competition, I've wanted to spoon my eyes out from sheer boredom; I'm not making any judgements beyond that. Oh, but I should also reveal that I actually do like Bristol Palin. Moving along ...)

As far as voting fraud is concerned, there seems to be hard evidence on conservative sites that Bristol supporters found a way to trick the system and cast an infinite number of e-mail votes for their woman. They then encouraged fellow conservatives to do the same with rallying words such as this:

You may not be a fan of the show or even Bristol but I firmly believe her continued success on the show demonstrates the power of the tea party.

The only thing this demonstrates to me is that Tea Partiers have a little too much time on their hands, are more tech-savy than I, and have questionable taste in TV. But as far as demonstrating the "power of the Tea Party"? I think the mid-term elections were a little more successful in said demonstration than whether or not Bristol stays on the show.

People, can we please stop confusing politics with mindless entertainment, especially when the Palins are concerned? Frankly, it's ruining the whole TV viewing experience.

What do you make of the Bristol Palin/Tea Party conspiracy theories?

I think you're missing the point. What the teapartiers care about is 'winning', period. They don't care that it's some "crappy reality show". To the Palin supporters, politics is like a sporting event and you play to win. These people are so obsessed and cultish in their love and blind support of the Palin cabal that they would most certainly make a point to do everything in their power to help BP to win .... and somehow would gloat about it as though it were a meaningful accomplishment.

This whole DWTS fiasco is just more proof of how much the teabaggers want to force their political ideology on everyone. They don't believe in fairness or even winning fairly. they only believe in winning and do whatever it takes to get it. Never mind that every week BP has been in the bottom 2 (according to DWTS) Never mind that she can't dance - in fact it's embarrassing to watch her - stiff arms, lack of emotion & awkward attempts at rhythm, yet every week she managed to get the votes to stay in the game. Hmm, odd...especially when people who were progressing like Audrina Patridge got the boot over her. Then I heard that all these cons had messages up on their sites telling people to vote for her and how to create new accounts to make extra votes. Why? If you're not progressing like the others, you don't deserve to stay in the game. But wingnuts don't care about winning fair. All they care about is winning. I guess they think this will give them credibility. By doing this they continue to display their classless mentality and agregious behavior. They are truly a despicable lot. I've never seen anyone stoop as low as these people. And for what? a dance contest? my god they are so demented.

You are so right! But the wingnuts will still be laughing at all of us "Losers". Let that put some steel in our backbones.

If keeping Bristol on the show shows the power of the Tea Party, in that case it simultaneously proves the weakness of her dancing ability.

I think personally the judges need to vote because no matter what is being said ABC is not going to redo the Vote. For all we know ABC is probably the one helping (im just saying). Sarah Palin is given a show by ABC and mayabe this has nothing to do with it, but I'm not dumb. Something is up and Its good to know that Our American people who believe in fairness is not standing for it!!!

Why would people who've shown no reservations about cheating in presidential elections give a second thought to cheating a high school popularity contest?
03:15 AM on 11/21/2010
you're right it is a popularity contest but usually one becomes popular on that show because they've worked hard and improved and look better & better each week. Its hard to watch BP dance out there because I'm embarrassed for her. She looks awful and can't move. I'm sure she's worked hard but sometimes working hard isn't enough - you have to actually improve from that hard work and I don't see much of that from her performances. I haven't watched the show in the last 3-4 seasons but I tuned in this season because of Jennifer Grey. I watched the first few shows and the last 2 and I barely see any difference in Palin's technique (i was a dancer and choreographer for over 20 years so I know what to look for) She's awful and should've gotten the boot 5 weeks ago.....

It's sad in any competition when the most talented people don't win because they aren't the most popular. That sends a bad message about sports and competition to ourselves and our children! Do we really need more examples on how everything is rigged or sure looks like it because Bristol was so obviously beneath the skill level of other dancer's. The judges were right!

The question isn't whether her fans are cheating. The question is why does she have any fans.

Who cares? Give her the little trophy and send her packing to Alaska. In another couple of months, who will remember; and more importantly, who will EVER give credit to the Tea Party for her win. In the grand scheme of things, this doesn't even warrant a bar on the chart.

I find it strange that she's still on but it's pretty unusual that no one in this vast right wing conspiracy has leaked the widely but secretly disseminated "how to cheat" instructions. I suspect there are a lot of Palin supporters just voting for her on their own. And I also find it amusing THAT ANYONE REALLY CARES ALL THAT MUCH WHO WINS. IT;S A FRICKIN ENTERTAINMENT TV SHOW, NOT A PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION.

There were sites teaching them how to cheat, as yesterday they have removed the instructions.one site was consevatives 4 palin.
03:57 PM on 11/18/2010
Ok, this is what is reputed to be how they are cheating:

Here's a hint: They don't have to be VALID email addresses to register them with ABC.com, there is apparently no validation process. The just have to be formatted like a valid email address, and you must use a valid zip code and a birthdate that makes you old enough to vote. I'm voting like a democrat, all night long…
No, it doesn't have to be a valid email address – I had one of my anonymous ones XXX@yahoo.com that I used, and then just did the sign-up process all over again with XXX1@yahoo.com and it worked

Don't know if it is true, I don't watch and don't vote for DWTS, but if it interests you try it. Maybe if they are inundated with votes for say Jennifer Grey as well as Palin it will cause them to try to fix it.

First I think there is cheating this season. I have watched this show for many years and never has someone so bad made it to the finals.
On the other hand, it is very probable that Palin will win if this runs true to form as far as the voting has gone. In my mind that will be very sad and show DWTS that it needs to change the show desperately. They will not need to have judges and certainly will not need to waste 9 weeks of tv if they continue to let their show be a popularity contest.
It is also sad that Bristol, if she wins, will be "brough and paid for", a great lesson to teach your children, right?
I can see her in a few years showing her little one/ones her trophy and saying "see what your gramma brought for me"

"People, can we please stop confusing politics with mindless entertainment, especially when the Palins are concerned?"

When it comes to the Palin's, confusing politics and mindless entertainment go hand in hand. Of course the conservative veiwers are rigging the vote. They don't know the difference between confusing politics and mindless entertainment.

Got a great laugh hearing about the guy that shot out his TV screen because he was upset about Bristol remaining on despite her lack of talent. Too funny! You couldn't make this stuff up if you tried.

I have some sympathy for Bristol Palin in this situation. She seems to be a fairly practical person, and she knows that her dancing did not earn her a place in the finals. She also knows that many audience members who voted for her actually were voting for her mother, rather than her. (She is neither a good enough dancer nor one of those competitors whose engaging personalities win over viewers.) That puts her in a fairly uncomfortable position, and I imagine she has to fight at least some feelings of humiliation, particularly when it comes to the competitors who she knows are far better dancers than she is, but didn't get the audience votes she did. (She knows they know it, too,) I'm glad her competitors have all been kind about this, at least as far as I've seen. She doesn't deserve the grief of being such a controversial person's daughter.

I mean, I'm just sayin' that you lost me at "she seems to be a fairly practical person." On what do you base that?

Nope. She's learned from her grizzly mom how to fool the public, and those willfully ignorant ones drool all over themselves thinking she has something to contribute to society. Tuesday night was a travesty. I pray on my knees every night that the fools of America will get over this obsession soon.
