When it comes to riding giants, big wave surfer Kurt Rist is no stranger to the gladiator sport. But how does one of North America's most promising big wave athletes hail from Southampton, New York, a place most known for wealth and luxury over anything else -- certainly not surfing.

In search of massive swell and the opportunity to put his skills to the test, Kurt Rist adopted the west coast of Ireland as his second home. In return, the people of Ireland have celebrated his achievements, especially after he braved Prowlers, one of the heaviest, most dangerous waves in the country.

Rist currently teaches surf lessons at Hamptons Surf Co. in New York during the summer.
