A Makeover Story: Johanna

Posted: 01/06/12 07:32 PM ET

I talk a lot about general dentistry topics, and indeed, I do handle all general dentistry issues. But in reality, I am more of a cosmetic dentist than anything. This means that while I do plenty of routine dentistry, I do even more veneers and crowns.

Some people think cosmetic dentistry is something that only movie stars get to enhance their smile. Truthfully, that's far from the reality -- while I have done plenty of stars' and athletes' teeth, many of my patients are everyday people who are simply looking to have a better smile. And in some cases, their smiles are so bad they are inhibiting their lives -- such is the story in this short video.

The video is about Johanna York, who came to me with a mouth that was ruining her life. She was ashamed of her appearance, and that affected every part of her day. It affected how she dressed, where she went, how she interacted with people, etc. Looks are important to us, and for Johanna, it definitely began with her teeth.

I'll let the video tell the story, but suffice to say, the before and after (complete with new hairstyle and makeover by associates Ted Gibson and Jason Backe) is simply incredible. You can really see how a new smile can affect one's perspective on everything.

Don't just look at her smile in the before and after sequences -- look at her eyes, her radiance, her very essence... That's the key, and the true end result I'm after.

My gums and bones were negatively affected after 3x with cancer. Because of a great dentist, many bone and tissue grafts and 3 implants I feel wonderful. Of course it is expensive even with insurance, My husband and I feel it was well worth the 11000 dollars

I truly do hope that simple facial make-up with a new hair style along with dental restoration of her crippling oral disease does spark a miracle in her life, however, we can't ignore the possibility that something deep in her psyche moved her, over many years, to make unhealthy choices which contributed to a life of suffering. Unless personal issues are resolved, cosmetic enhancement never becomes the miracle we hope for and rarely sparks any lasting change in personal behavior that might lead to a better life. Time will only tell, but I am impressed with Dr. Connelly's cosmetic skill. She really does have a beautiful smile now. WOW!

she said financial issues prevented her from going to the dentist then shame. Get over yourself and actually read and listen, actively and with comprehension

I've thought about it several times, but I never felt like forking over the cash for something that I really already had. I would love whiter teeth, but I dont see the need to get any of my teeth replaced. Later in life this could become a very viable option to dentures.

This video clip is an inspirational one especially for those individuals with same conditions like Johanna York. Thus, to accomplish this procedure, you must know who is the dentist appropriate for you and can deliver a good service.

That clip was really, really moving. Of the many things done in your careers (the dentist, the hairstylist, and the makeup artist), this is one to be proud of...you all really changed that woman's life. She looks so pretty at the end, and so amazed and relieved, too, like a two-ton weight of shame had been taken off her shoulders.

How fortunate you all are to have found each other.
