Those Who Mock Michele Bachmann Should Pay Attention to Her Recent Debating Performances

Posted: 12/20/2011 11:55 am

Few could deny that Congresswoman Michele Bachmann is an extraordinary person. Coming from a modest single parent background, she put herself through law school, raised five children and 23 foster children, before abruptly bursting into the forefront of America's political scene in just a few short years. Pollsters place Bachmann as an outsider in the Republican leadership nomination but opponents should be wary; Bachmann has only ever lost one election in her life and that was for a local school board. Her ability to beat tried and tested candidates with far more experience than her has been remarkable.

Back in July, The Weekly Standard put Bachmann on its cover and ran a glowing feature on her that insisted she was a serious candidate. Having gone on to win the Iowa straw poll back in August, Bachmann now finds herself lagging in the polls, down with the once rather more promising-looking Rick Perry. Republicans are nervous about the electability of a conservative. Yet as we saw with the rapid and dramatic rise and fall in the fortunes of Herman Cain, things can change suddenly in this race and as The Telegraph's Tim Stanley has predicted, in Iowa we may see a last minute boost for the overtly religious candidates, which of course includes Bachmann.

For those who would have us dismiss Michele Bachmann as not being a serious politician, a kind of Sarah Palin mark two, they would do well to pay attention to Bachmann's performances in the recent televised debates. She has proven to be not simply an incredibly eloquent debater and sharp thinker, but has also appeared bright and fresh-faced alongside some rather grey and tired looking, not to mention unimaginative, older men.

In the earlier debates Bachmann was doing a great deal to present herself as not only the candidate that could consolidate the supporters of small government in the Tea Party, but also as the consistently socially conservative candidate. She stressed her impeccable record when it came to being pro-life as well as for protecting core values on marriage. Indeed, this is something Bachmann has remained resolutely committed to despite a ferocious hate campaign against her that has seen two gay rights activists accost her in the ladies' bathroom, while threats from campaigners forced Bachmann to request security protection and to have her family's home address removed from the state senate directory.

In the latest debate, however, Bachmann has appeared more eager to be seen as a candidate with broader appeal. She pointed to her record in Minnesota where she had had to win over both independents and Democrat voters to take her seat. She has also gone to great lengths to place herself and her worldview in with the Constitution and the values of America's founders.

Perhaps Bachmann's greatest strength displayed during these televised debates is an ability to keep her opponents on the defensive with an adversarial manner that none of the other candidates seem quite capable of. She effortlessly succeeded in making Ron Paul look ridiculous for the views he holds on Iran and brutally exposed his policies as "dangerous." Paul was left spluttering -- "She took my time!" -- but when he resorted to accusing her of getting her facts wrong, he only succeeded in appearing desperate.

Newt Gingrich also attempted to play the "Congresswoman Bachmann has her facts wrong" card when she got him on the run -- both over the dubious donations he has received from Freddie Mac as well as on his record on what the congresswoman called "the barbaric procedure of what is known as partial birth abortion." When Gingrich yet again claimed that Bachmann was making "wild accusations," she fought for her right to speak and hit back calling his remarks "outrageous" and defended her corner uncompromisingly. Now isn't that the kind of roasting Republicans would like to see Obama receive?

Even if Bachmann doesn't get to head the GOP this time around, one can at least hope she receives a senior position in a future Republican administration. And if ever Americans decide they do want a president who combines the unwavering determination of Thatcher with the sunny disposition of Reagan and the staunch moral clarity of both, well then they have it in Michele Bachmann.

This article linked to a Slate article that noted that Bachmann's facts were wrong. Too bad that this doesn't seem to make any difference to Mr. Wilson. I guess that living in a no facts world can be comforting for a time, but the facts do eventually win out.

See, here's the thing and there is no getting around it. She is like all other politicians and that is to serve themselves. That is what they are good at. That is all that they know. One person cannot do all the things they claim. They will say and do anything to get elected, they are only out there to serve themselves. They come at us as saviors.

Centre for Transatlantic Affairs? I never heard of you, but I can only guess that any common sense you have got lost on the way across the Atlantic. This woman is ignorant and unteachable, like her friend Sarah Palin. The scary part is that she manages to sound reasonable once in a long while, so people like you, who apparently espouse her positions, think she is presidential material.

A great debater is just that a great debater. But you have to have facts on your side..

Wow this just proves the media will say anything. Even the title says it all those who mock should pay attention to her debating performances. Um, what do you think we did Tom J Wilson! Your interpretation of the battle she had with Ron Paul is ridiculous. She cut him off and you do realize that her facts were proven false. PoliticsFactCheck sited that 75% of everything she has said through the debates were rated mostly false or pants on fire. So you think that a person who lies or bends the truth is doing well? I just hope that the next time I see you write a article it will be found in the comedy section. I haven’t laughed so hard since Newt was polling first. Its just sad that I know you probably believe what you wrote.

As a candidate, she has been way more impressive than Palin. Bachmann appears to be a decent debater and is unafraid but just because she seems able to handle public speaking does not mean she should be President. Her antiquated ideas about women and other social issues shows a person unable to see beyond her own limited experiences and she seems willing to believe any little controversy presented to her, rail against it all the while never checking to see if it's really true. Do you really want someone in the White House like that? I don't.

she says many things that are offensive. many that are inane. many that are demonstrably false. that you are the least bit impressed robs you of credibility.
02:27 PM on 12/22/2011
Please expand on your accusation. Other than the HPV issue, what else has she said that was "wrong." Remember the foolish lies of Obama may not have been offensive to hear, but very offensive to endure.
09:41 PM on 12/22/2011
The HPV thing was just her relaying a story a woman had *just* told her after coming up to her, crying, after a debate. She relayed the story with 30 minutes of the woman tell her the story. She never said she thought it was true, simply shared it because she was clearly feeling bad for the woman. Do libs have no hearts after all? I saw the interview myself, this is the honest to god's truth.

I will not pay attention to her debating performances. I will continue to mock her.

This is all a tongue in cheek, sarcastic satire...isn't it? Isn't it?

She apparently is a good politician, unfortunately facts are not part of her talents. Just another politician who knows how to get herself elected, but has no regards for truth.
02:30 PM on 12/22/2011
Other than the HPV issue, what "lies" are you inferring to? I think you don't like to hear the truth because it resonates something you are offended by, which is your problem, not hers.

In the 12/10/11 debate, which she won hands down, MB's courageous reference to our broken Federal income tax system underlines why she is truly the one Constitutional Conservative in the race.
47% of American families pay no Federal income tax. Everyone should pay their fair share, including the 47% who consume tax money and do not pay a dime. Everyone makes "enough money" to pay at least a nominal Federal income tax. Bachmann does not demagogue the issue, as does Team Obama media as well as the politicians seeking votes from the 47% who are tax consumers at the expense of the 53% who are tax payers. Congresswoman Bachmann is the most principled Constitutional Conservative on the national scene: the little lady with the spine of titanium.

Not everyone makes "enough money" to pay a nominal Federal income tax.

You know, homeless people for one.

Do you pay income tax? If so, are you really complaining? The average income tax is as low as its been in decades for the majority of Americans. I'm fresh out of college, making just under $30k and I'd be willing to pay a little bit more as long as the super wealthy took the same percentage increase I did.

If you think Michelle Bachmann is a sharp thinker, then I understand why your article is wrong about everything, right down the line. Bachmann's debate performances are replete with foolish lies. The fact that she insists she is telling the truth and has her facts straight is irrelevant.
02:32 PM on 12/22/2011
What lies are you referring to? To make accusations that demote another, you must have some relevant information or perhaps you are offended by the real version of truth and not the socialist version.
08:21 PM on 12/20/2011
My perception of Bachmann is vastly different from yours. I will grant that she has impressed me with being a sharp thinker during the debates. However, I she, in my opinion, did not put Paul on the run with her remarks on Iran. She simply stuck to her guns, pun intended. She, like most of the candidates except for Paul think that Iran has to be dealt with militarily. This shows that she either has not learned anything from our years of war or is pandering to the base. When she is not saber-rattling she is prattling on about repealing "Obamacare". She cannot point to a single piece of legislation that she has gotten passed. She is an empty suit.
