The incident involved a 58-year-old woman from Pennsylvania and occurred at a popular snorkeling spot near Green Cay.
Shark attacks in the area have been very rare until recently, with an average of about one reported per 10 years for the last century.
“The shark bite was unlucky. But after that I ... had so much good luck," the survivor said after his horrifying encounter.
“The coast is our community’s backyard,” the local mayor said. "We are all in shock."
