The NYPD is investigating the assault, which took place just hours after a "Turban Day" celebration in Times Square, as a possible hate crime.
Hundreds of Sikhs took over Times Square on Saturday to tie turbans on men and women of all faiths. The event, dubbed Turban Day, was organized by Sikhs of New York to commemorate the holiday Vaisakhi and spread awareness about the religion.
The colorful event taught people about the Sikh faith and aimed to stop bullying.

They'll no longer have to choose between serving and their faith.
Sikh Americans have a proud history of military service. However, since the early 1980's they have faced a ban that prevents them from serving with their beards and turbans. After fighting for many years, they have just scored a major policy victory with the U.S. Army that eases many of the restrictions on their articles of faith.
