Police forced the doctor to sign a statement claiming he was spreading falsehoods about the coronavirus, which later took his life.
Dr. Li Wenliang was reprimanded by police for "spreading rumors" about the deadly virus, which he contracted himself.
The semiautonomous territory reported its first coronavirus death this week.
“We have launched a people’s war of prevention of the epidemic," President Xi Jinping said.
Construction crews worked around the clock to build the 1,000-bed hospital in Wuhan, the central city where the outbreak was first detected in December.
A man who traveled to the Philippines from Wuhan died on Saturday, the Philippines Department of Health confirmed.
