Holiday Traditions

Posted: 12/22/2010 2:38 am

Every year my family and I all start planning for the holidays right after Thanksgiving. The first week of December, my boys and I pick out our tree and spend the day decorating and attempting to bake cookies. New York City, especially, is magical at Christmas. There's no place that gets you more in the mood for the holidays--Rockefeller Center, the extraordinary windows and ice skating in Central Park.

I'm always interested in how people celebrate. Every season on our blog, we ask some of our favorite Tastemakers -- designers, editors, authors and chefs -- about their holiday traditions. Last year, it was all about how they give back and New Year's celebrations. This year, it's about entertaining, music and food. Here's how some Tastemakers are celebrating.

Favorite dessert: “My mom’s traditional West Indian black cake, which is sort of like fruit cake except it tastes really good. It has more rum.”
